The Organisation of Women of African and Asian Descent (OWAAD) was an activist organisation that focused on issues affecting Black and Asian women in Britain. It was the first national black women's organisation in the United Kingdom. [1] Founded in 1978 by key figures in the British black women's movement Stella Dadzie and Olive Morris, it was active until 1983. [2] Its aims were to organise and respond to political and social injustice, to issues of racism and sexism, and it aimed to highlight the presence and contributions of black British women, and bring a black feminist perspective to contemporary political thought. [3] OWAAD has been called "a watershed in the history of Black women's rights activism". [4]

OWAAD was a broadly socialist, non-hierarchical national umbrella organisation. It held four annual conferences from 1979 to 1982, the first leading to black women's groups being formed nationwide. OWAAD held a sit-in at Heathrow Airport to protest virginity tests being carried out on Asian female immigrants to test their residency and marriage claims. [5]

OWAAD disbanded in 1982 for a variety of reasons. [6] [7]

Origins of OWAAD

Due to the limitations of other activist groups such as African Students’ Union (ASU) and British feminist groups that were often dominated by patriarchal male-dominated leaders and white supremacy, the voices and experiences of Black Women were often overlooked. Black women in this group were often seen as “...minute-takers, typists, and coffee-makers but hardly ever as political and intellectual equals.” [8] Several members of OWAAD were members of Brixton Black Women's Group, which had been founded in 1973. [7]

Black Women being excluded from anti-racist spaces and feminist spaces has been defined as an effect of intersectionality coined by Kimberle Crenshaw in 1989. Founding members Stella Dadzie, Olive Morris and Gail Lewis created OWAAD to be an independent, national, umbrella organisation of Black women. The original name of the group was “Organisation of Women of Africa and African Descent”, however realising the commonalities between Black and Asian Women in the UK, the name changed to Organisation of Women of African and Asian Descent. [9]

Community Work

OWAAD organised around multiple issues impacting both Black and Asian Women, such as domestic violence, children's rights in school, anti-Black discrimination within policing, and immigration and deportation. OWAAD joined the campaign against Section 4 of the 1824 Vagrancy Act which enabled police officers discretionary power to arrest anyone they deemed as suspicious. This gave British police and the UK Criminal Justice System the power to arrest, charge and convict someone for walking down the street. Black men were disproportionately arrested on this law. [10]

OWAAD also protested for reproductive rights for Black and Asian Women, including agitating against the testing of Depo-Provera, a contraceptive drug on Black, Asian and other marginalised groups. [3] In the 1960s-1970s there were widespread reports of sterilisation abuse directed at women of colour in the USA. New contraceptives in the 1990s such as Depo-Provera aimed to temporarily sterilize women via an intramuscular injection was often given to women of colour as “guinea pigs” within the US and internationally. The documentary film “The Ultimate Test” found that several thousands of African-American women were unaware they were participating in clinical trials of the drug. [11] OWAAD protested that Depo-Provera which had long-term side effects was being used to control the number of children in Black and Asian women. [12]

Virginity testing was often used against Asian women on arrival in the UK in the 1970s. Immigration officers would be able to fast track women into the UK with physical proof that they were unmarried and childless. These virginity tests were used to determine the outcome of a woman's application with the added restrictions of the Immigration Act 1971 that increased discriminatory practices to limit non-white Commonwealth migrants. In 1979 the UK Asian Women's collective (Awaz) and OWAAD organised a protest at Heathrow airport to stop virginity tests that some migrant women were subjected to by immigration services on arrival to the UK. [13]

Conferences

The first OWAAD conference in 1979 was held in Brixton at the Abeng Centre in Gresham Road with a panel of speakers on education, employment, immigration, the health service and more. [14]

Publications

OWAAD published the newsletter FOWAAD after the first National Black Woman's Conference. It aimed to connect all members covering relevant campaigns and listing information on Black feminist groups. It included literature and media reviews and letters from members discussing issues that were oppressing Black and Asian women. The newsletter was part of a wider movement in Black feminist and lesbian activism in the 1970s and 1980s. [15]

OWAAD founders authored the book The Heart of the Race: Black Women's Lives in Britain (1985), which documented the experiences of black women in the UK. The group was also involved in the publication of the journal Sisterhood and the anthology Charting the Journey: Writings by Black and Third World Women (1988).[ citation needed ]

Olive Elaine Morris was a Jamaican-born British-based community leader and activist in the feminist, black nationalist, and squatters' rights campaigns of the 1970s. At the age of 17, she claimed she was assaulted by Metropolitan Police officers following an incident involving a Nigerian diplomat in Brixton, South London. She joined the British Black Panthers, becoming a Marxist–Leninist communist and a radical feminist. She squatted buildings on Railton Road in Brixton; one hosted Sabarr Books and later became the 121 Centre, another was used as offices by the Race Today collective. Morris became a key organiser in the Black Women's Movement in the United Kingdom, co-founding the Brixton Black Women's Group and the Organisation of Women of African and Asian Descent in London.

A variety of movements of feminist ideology have developed over the years. They vary in goals, strategies, and affiliations. They often overlap, and some feminists identify themselves with several branches of feminist thought.

The London Black Revolutionaries is a revolutionary socialist British political organisation centred in London. The organisation's membership is rumoured to be a mix of Caribbean and South Asian youth, who had been part of an oppositional faction and split of more than 550 members from the Socialist Workers Party (UK) in 2012–13. Its closed membership consists primarily of Black British and British Asian youths, who define themselves as a strictly working-class, grassroots organisation based on anti-racist, anti-fascist, anti-homophobic and anti-sexist principles. Rejecting pacifism, the Black Revolutionaries take a militant approach to their activities, employing direct action as a tactic. The organisation is said to be primarily based in Brixton, South London.

Stella Dadzie is a British educationalist, activist, writer and historian. She is best known for her involvement in the UK's Black Women's Movement, being a founding member of the Organisation of Women of African and Asian Descent (OWAAD) in the 1970s, and co-authoring with Suzanne Scafe and Beverley Bryan in 1985 the book The Heart of the Race: Black Women's Lives in Britain. In 2020, Verso published a new book by Dadzie, A Kick in the Belly: Women, Slavery & Resistance.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Feminism in South Africa</span>

Feminism in South Africa concerns the organised efforts to improve the rights of the girls and women of South Africa. These efforts are largely linked to issues of feminism and gender equality on one hand, and racial equality and the political freedoms of African and other non-White South African ethnic groups on the other. Early feminist efforts concerned the suffrage of White women, allowing them to vote in elections beginning from 1930s, and significant activism in the 1950s to demand equal pay of men and women. The 1980s were a major turning point in the advancement of South African women, and in 1994, following the end of the apartheid regime, the status of women was bolstered by changes to the country's constitution. Since the end of apartheid, South African feminism is a contribution associated with the liberation and democratization of the country, however, the movement still struggles with the embedded conservative and patriarchal views within some segments of South African society.

The British Black Panthers (BBP) or the British Black Panther movement (BPM) was a Black Power organisation in the United Kingdom that fought for the rights of black people and racial minorities in the country. The BBP were inspired by the US Black Panther Party, though they were unaffiliated with them. The British Panthers adopted the principle of political blackness, which included activists of black as well as South Asian origin. The movement started in 1968 and lasted until around 1973.

Beverley Bryan is a Jamaican educationist and retired academic who was a professor of language education at the University of the West Indies in Mona. Settling in Britain with her parents in the late 1950s, she went on to become a founding member of the Brixton Black Women's Group and co-authored the 1985 book The Heart of the Race: Black Women's Lives in Britain.

Elizabeth Obi is a British activist who was involved in the feminist, black nationalist, and squatters' rights campaigns of the 1970s. A close friend of Olive Morris, in 2009 she founded the Remembering Olive Collective, which researches and documents Morris's life.

Lola Olufemi is a British writer. She is an organiser with the London Feminist Library, and her writing has been published in many national and international magazines and newspapers. She is the author of Experiments in Imagining Otherwise and Feminism, Interrupted: Disrupting Power, and the co-editor of A FLY Girl's Guide to University: Being a Woman of Colour at Cambridge and Other Institutions of Power and Elitism.

Gail Lewis is a British writer, psychotherapist, researcher, and activist. She is visiting senior fellow in the Department of Gender Studies at the London School of Economics, and Reader Emerita of Psychosocial Studies at Birkbeck College, London. She trained as a psychodynamic psychotherapist at the Tavistock Clinic.

The Brixton Black Women's Group (BWG) was an organisation for Black women in Brixton. One of the first Black women's groups in the UK, the BWG existed from 1973 to 1989. BWG members were also involved in Organisation of Women of African and Asian Descent and members were integral in organising the OWAAD conferences from 1979 and 1982.

Amrit Wilson is a British-Indian writer, journalist and activist who since the 1970s has focused on issues of race and gender in Britain and South Asian politics. Her 1978 book Finding a Voice: Asian Women in Britain won the Martin Luther King Award, and remains an influential feminist book. Her other book publications include Dreams, Questions, Struggles: South Asian Women in Britain, and as a journalist she has been published in outlets including Ceasefire Magazine, Media Diversified, openDemocracy and The Guardian.

<i>The Heart of the Race</i> 1985 socio-historical study book

The Heart of the Race: Black Women's Lives in Britain was a 1985 book by Beverley Bryan, Stella Dadzie and Suzanne Scafe. A socio-historical study, it looked at the realities of life for Black women in the United Kingdom after the Second World War. Although authorship was credited to Bryan, Dadzie and Scafe, the book was in fact written not only by those three named women but also by several others in the Brixton Black Women's Group (BWG), of which all the authors were members. The BWG originally planned for The Heart of the Race to be credited to the "Brixton Black Women's Group" as a whole. However, the book's publisher Virago Press refused to use a collective name and instead credited three members of the BWG, namely, Bryan, Dadzie and Scafe.

Gerlin Bean is a Jamaican community worker who was active in the radical feminist and Black nationalist movements in the United Kingdom in the 1960s and 1970s. Trained as a nurse, she became a dedicated community activist and social worker, involved in the founding of the Black Women's Action Committee of the Black Unity and Freedom Party, the women's section of the Black Liberation Front, the Brixton Black Women's Group, and the Organisation of Women of African and Asian Descent (OWAAD). Bean's work and activism focused on eliminating discriminatory policies for people of colour, women, and people with disabilities. She fought for equal educational opportunity, fair wages, adequate housing, and programmes that supported families, such as counselling services, child care, and health care.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Chardine Taylor-Stone</span> Black British Feminist activist

Chardine Taylor-Stone is a British feminist activist, writer and musician. In December 2015 Taylor-Stone founded Stop Rainbow Racism to campaign against the performance of ‘Black face’ at LGBTQ+ Venues. The campaign began in response to a performance by Drag queen Charlie Hides at The Royal Vauxhall Tavern. Taylor-Stone was the drummer for the band Big Joanie, started in 2013. On 5 October 2023, the band announced that Taylor-Stone had left, replaced by an interim drummer for their European tour that month.

Speak Out was a second-wave feminist newsletter, launched in 1977 by the Brixton Black Women's Group (BBWG). The aim of the newsletter was to keep alive the debate about the relevance of feminism to black politics and provided a black women's perspective on immigration, housing, health and culture.

Mukti magazine, founded in 1983 was a quarterly British Asian magazine written and run primarily in London and Birmingham by a collective of Asian women, the 'Mukti Collective'. Mukti has been contextualised as being part of a second wave of Black British and South Asian feminist periodicals. Although based primarily in London and Birmingham, the magazine had international readership including readers from Amsterdam and India. The title referred to political and spiritual liberation. It was available by subscription, through a distribution agent named "Full Time Distribution" and by direct sales via Mukti's office. They received funding from the Greater London Council and Camden Council. The text was published in six different languages - English, Urdu, Hindi, Gujarati, Bengali and Punjabi - in order to make it accessible to as many readers as possible both to read and contribute to the magazine.

The Women's Liberation Movement in the UK has consisted of a diverse, and often interconnected, group of individuals, collectives, publishing houses, and protests through the 20th century and after. The movement emerged from earlier developments in women's and workers' liberation and civil rights in the UK, including equal suffrage ideologies, and proto-feminist writing, and generated new movements in feminist, queer, and anti-racist activism in the UK into the late 20th and 21st centuries. The UK women's liberation movement is characterised by organising on the grounds of intersections between women's rights and other issues, for instance workers' rights, racism and ethnic discrimination, religion, and social justice.
