The sculpture is composed of juxtaposed steel elements, painted bright red-orange. [1] It is named for the Greek mythological hunter Orion, [1] and stands at 53 feet tall and 21,220 pounds. [2]
Orion was created in 2006, [1] and was first on display at Chicago's Millennium Park. [2] It first arrived at UMMA as a long-term loan in 2008, helping to celebrate the Museum's new Maxine and Stuart Frankel and the Frankel Family Wing. [2] In April 2018 it was removed in preparation for stormwater system repairs nearby, and was sent back to di Suvero's studio for a fresh coat of paint. [2] In 2019, UMMA purchased Orion, and it was reinstalled. [2] [3] Di Suvero visited UMMA for the reinstallation, and the University of Michigan awarded him an honorary Doctor of Fine Arts degree. The University of Michigan Museum of Art (UMMA) in Ann Arbor, Michigan with 94,000 sq ft (8,700 m2) is one of the largest university art museums in the United States. Built as a war memorial in 1909 for the university's fallen alumni from the Civil War, Alumni Memorial Hall originally housed U-M's Alumni office along with the university's growing art collection. Its first director was Jean Paul Slusser, who served from 1946 to his retirement in 1957.
William Victor Higgins was an American painter and teacher, born in Shelbyville, Indiana. At the age of fifteen, he moved to Chicago, where he studied at the Art Institute in Chicago and at the Chicago Academy of Fine Arts. In Paris he was a pupil of Robert Henri, René Menard and Lucien Simon, and when he was in Munich he studied with Hans von Hayek. He was an associate of the National Academy of Design. Higgins moved to Taos, New Mexico in 1913 and joined the Taos Society of Artists in 1917. In 1923 he was on the founding board of the Harwood Foundation with Elizabeth (Lucy) Harwood and Bert Phillips.

The artwork was made in 1981-82 from steel I-beams painted an orange-red color. It measures 40 feet in height, and it sits at the end of Wisconsin Avenue in front of the footbridge that leads to the Milwaukee Art Museum.
