The Ottawa Police Service Pipe Band is a Grade 2 competitive pipe band based in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. [1] As well as participating in competitions, the band performs at civic events, parades [2] and charitable fund-raisers. [3] [4]

History

The Ottawa Police Service Pipe Band was founded in 1969, to promote good public relations and to play at the funerals of police officers. [5]

In 2012 the band played for the return of Olympic athletes at the Ottawa International Airport. [6]

The band won the Pipers' and Pipe Band Society of Ontario Grade 2 Champion Supreme Award in 2012, 2013, [7] and 2014.

On 7 July 2013, members of the band performed Mull of Kintyre on stage with Paul McCartney as part of his Out There concert tour. The band performed to a sold out hometown crowd at the Canadian Tire Centre in Ottawa, Canada. [8]

The band won the North American Pipe Band Championship (Grade 2) at the Glengarry Highland Games in 2013 and 2014.

In October 2014, the band was promoted to Grade 1 by the Pipers' and Pipe Band Society of Ontario. [9] [10]

In 2007 and 2018 the band opened for Rod Stewart at the British rock singer and songwriter's Ottawa concerts. [11]

The band requested a downgrade to grade 2 for the 2019 season after a two-year hiatus, citing a drop in numbers after the departure of lead-drummer Brendan Kelly and pipe major Andrew Hayes. [12]

Regimental Pipes and Drums of The Calgary Highlanders

The Regimental Pipes and Drums of The Calgary Highlanders is an authorized volunteer pipe band associated with The Calgary Highlanders of the Canadian Forces. For many years, the band was a bona fide, and separate, military unit unto itself, with a separate Unit Identification Code within the CF. Today, the band has been reduced to volunteer status but officially maintains an establishment of eight paid military musicians on its rolls. The band has had mixed success in competitions, but under the direction of Pipe Major Michael Giles had become successful in the Grade Three circuit in Alberta in the years leading up to the regimental centennial in 2010. The band published a recording to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the Regiment in 1990, titled Eighty Years of Glory and commemorated its centennial in 2010 by releasing a second CD entitled Onward.

Royal Military College of Canada Bands

The Royal Military College of Canada Bands is the official group of bands of the Royal Military College of Canada. The group is composed of four sections: the brass and reed, the pipes and drums, highland dancers, and choristers. Total band membership consists of 105 Officer Cadets from the college. Officer Cadets in the band practice three days a week in the morning on top of attending their individual full-time university programs.

Out There (tour)

Out There was a concert tour by English singer-songwriter Paul McCartney lasting from 4 May 2013 to 22 October 2015. Some notable nights of the tour included concerts at Warsaw's National Stadium, Verona's Roman Amphitheatre, and Vienna's Happel Stadium, the latter of which he would play for the first time since 2003's Back in the World tour. McCartney played in Belo Horizonte, Goiânia and Fortaleza, all in Brazil and in Japan for the first time since the Driving World Tour back in 2002.
