Ouigi Theodore (born 1975/1976) is an American fashion designer and stylist known particularly for his menswear label Brooklyn Circus. During the late 2000s and early 2010s he was also known as "The Bearded Man" due to his distinctive facial hair.

Early life

Quincy Ouigi Theodore was born in Port-au-Prince, Haiti [1] in 1975 or 1976. [2] When he was eight years old, his family moved to Crown Heights, Brooklyn. [2] [3] Theodore was brought up by his aunt and his grandmother following the death in 1990 of his mother when he was 15. [3] His aunt traveled often, and Theodore followed her example: he traveled through Europe and Asia. [3]

Theodore went to Brooklyn Technical High School, where he dropped his first name to avoid comparisons to Quincy Jones. [2] He graduated with a History degree from Stony Brook University and went on to study graphic design at the Fashion Institute of Technology, working as a graphic designer and club promoter before deciding to launch his fashion business, Brooklyn Circus. [2] He had already tried launching an earlier label, called Race, in 2003, but this was not successful. [4]

Career

The first Brooklyn Circus opened in Boerum Hill in 2006, selling Theodore's designs under the BKc label, [2] and has been described as a "house-of-prep' for the inner city," in contrast to other streetwear brands active at the time. [3] By choosing the word "circus", the intention was to suggest a disciplined traveling community that welcomed outsiders and those living on the edge of mainstream society, rather than catering only to those who fitted in with gangsta and drill rap influenced style such as baggy jeans and hip-hop sneakers. [3] [2] In a 2011 feature on Brooklyn Circus and its designer, Theodore told The New York Times that when he went overseas, people would see how he dressed, and tell him that he wasn't "urban" because he didn't look like he listened to hip-hop. [2] He also described how others had called his work dandy, Anglophile, foppish and even steampunk, although Theodore considers his work "retro-urban." [2] By then, he had redefined himself as an "idea generator" rather than a designer, employing others to design under his supervision and to manage production and wholesaling. [2]

By 2011, Brooklyn Circus had a second shop in San Francisco, and had outlets in Chicago and Stockholm, as well as being retailed by 25 shops in Japan. [2] Theodore has been recognised as a trend forecaster: he has been consulted by companies such as Hennessy, Toyota and G-Shock and he spoke at the PSFK conference in New York in 2010. [2] Durand Guion, the vice president of fashion for Macy's told Women's Wear Daily in 2021 that Brooklyn Circus had a strong aesthetic referencing vintage military styles and "true Americana", and that Theodore was an "amazing storyteller". [5]

In 2021 Theodore collaborated with Macy's on a capsule clothing collection titled Sun + Stone. [3] The collection was part of the 'Icons of Style' campaign, designed to feature Black American fashion and style-makers, where Theodore and four other Black designers (Zerina Akers, Misa Hylton, Allen Onyia, and Aminah Abdul Kihad) had their work manufactured and retailed by Macy's. [6] [5] The Sun + Stone collection is designed in honor of Theodore's family, especially his mother, with military influences and the numbers 1945 and 45 prominently featured (his mother's birth year and the age she was when she died). [5]

The Bearded Man

In the 2000s, Theodore grew a distinctive horizontal beard, resembling the horn of an anvil, which became his trademark and led to his alter ego, "The Bearded Man". [2] He used this title as his handle when posting to his style blog, and was credited under it in print adverts for Bushmills, Citizens Bank, and a Tide television advertisement. [2] In 2011, Theodore told the New York Times that he was recognised in the street as "The Bearded Man". [2] The Fall 2011 issue of Antenna had a fashion spread in which Theodore modelled as "The Bearded Man". [7] Also in 2011, GQ ran an article about Brooklyn Circus which referred to Theodore as "The Bearded Man himself." [8] In Hue, the alumni magazine for Fashion Institute for Technology graduates, Theodore was described as "The Bearded Man" in one sub-header to an article about his success. [4]

André Leon Talley American fashion journalist (1948–2022)

André Leon Talley was an American fashion journalist, stylist, creative director, and editor-at-large of Vogue magazine. He was the magazine's fashion news director from 1983 to 1987, its first African-American male creative director from 1988 to 1995, and then its editor-at-large from 1998 to 2013. Often regarded as a fashion icon, he was known for supporting emerging designers and advocating for diversity in the fashion industry; while the capes, kaftans, and robes he wore became his trademark look. Talley also served on the judging panel for America's Next Top Model.

Richard Merkin American artist

Richard Marshall Merkin was an American painter, illustrator and arts educator. Merkin's fascination with the 1920s and 1930s defined his art and shaped his identity as a professional dandy. Many of his works depict the interwar years, painting narrative scenes in bright colors of jazz musicians, film stars, writers, and sports heroes. Merkin was as well known for his outré sense of clothing style and collections of vintage pornography as he was for his painting and illustration work.

Deacon has been known to challenge the traditional ideas of womenswear and often uses wild prints and pop culture references in his designs. Spurr has received critical acclaim for the clothing line he launched in 2006 which is credited with revitalizing and modernizing classical menswear. He is currently the creative director and designer of a shoe label called March NYC.

Savile Row tailoring is men and women's bespoke tailoring that takes place on Savile Row and neighbouring streets in Mayfair, Central London. In 1846, Henry Poole, credited as being the "Founder of Savile Row", opened an entrance to his tailoring premises into No. 32 Savile Row. The term "bespoke" is understood to have originated in Savile Row when cloth for a suit was said to "be spoken for" by individual customers. The short street has been termed the "golden mile of tailoring", where customers have included Charles, Prince of Wales, Winston Churchill, Lord Nelson, Napoleon III, Muhammad Ali Jinnah, Laurence Olivier, Duke Ellington, and Jude Law.

Jidenna Theodore Mobisson, known mononymously as Jidenna, is an American rapper and singer. In 2015, Jidenna released two singles, "Classic Man" and "Yoga", promoting Monáe's label Wondaland Records' compilation EP, The Eephus (2015) with Epic Records. His debut album, The Chief, was released on February 17, 2017, and peaked at number 38 on the Billboard 200.

Todd Snyder is an American fashion designer based in New York City. He founded his eponymous fashion label in 2011. The brand was acquired by American Eagle Outfitters in 2015.

Misa Hylton is an American stylist and fashion designer. Known as a pioneer in the fashion industry, she has styled many hip-hop and R&B artists since the 1990s, most notably Lil' Kim and Mary J. Blige. Hylton's style, referred to as "hip-hop glamorous," has been credited with influencing fashion trends in popular culture. Hylton is a global creative partner for MCM and was the centerpiece of the 2019 documentary The Remix: Hip Hop x Fashion.

The eight-ball or 8-ball jacket is a style of leather jacket created by San Francisco–based designer Michael Hoban in 1990. The style is characterized by bright color-blocking and large black and white decals on the back and sleeves, made to look like the eight ball used in some cue sports. The distinctive design became trendy in 1990s fashion after being worn by athletes and hip-hop stars. The many symbolic associations of the eight ball, combined with the jacket's high retail price and celebrity associations quickly made it a status symbol for young people in the city's East Coast hip hop scene. Its popularity among youth led to robberies, some of which were fatal. Hoban's colorful designs were often counterfeited; he successfully sued a number of leather shops making knockoffs of his work. Eventually, he created a licensed diffusion line that sold lower-end versions of his jackets.
