Our Saviour's Church or more formally The Parish Church of the Transfiguration of Jesus is a Roman Catholic Baroque Parish church located in the village of Lija, Malta.

History

The parish of Lija was created on February 6, 1594. [1] The cornerstone for the church was laid by Bishop Davide Cocco Palmieri on May 20, 1694. The church was built on designs made by Giovanni Barbara and was finished by July 1702. The church was completely finished in 1782 and blessed by Bishop Vincenzo Labini on July 25, 1782. [2]

Interior

The interior of the church is modelled on the Tuscan order with traces of Doric order. The titular painting depicts the Transfiguration of Jesus and is the work of Mattia Preti dating from 1698. The same artist also painted two works depicting St Luke and St Matthew, respectively. Other notable works include Our Lady of the Rosary by Alessio Erardi dating from 1702. There are also works by Francesco Zahra depicting the Guardian Angels dating from 1757. Giuseppe Hyzler painted Our lady of Mount Carmel in the mid 19th century. One can also find a painting of the Holy Cross by Giuseppe Calì dating from 1891. Other artists such as Giuseppe D'Arena, Lazzru Pisani and Giuseppe Calleja. The paintings in the apse are the work of Ignazio Cortis dating from 1873 while that on the ceiling and the dome are the work of Giuseppe Cali. [3]

Giuseppe Calì was a Maltese painter, born in Valletta of Neapolitan parents and educated at the Accademia delle Belle Arti in Naples under Giuseppe Mancinelli. He was a prolific artist: almost every church of any consequence in Malta boasts a work of his, and according to one of his grandsons, was nicknamed ix-xitan tal-pinzell. He died in Valletta and was commemorated by the Republic of Malta with a series of four postage stamps in 1996, and a coin in 2004. His son Ramiro Calì was also a painter.

Alessio Erardi (1669–1727) was a Maltese painter. He was the son of the artist Stefano Erardi and his wife Caterina Buttigieg. He initially studied art with his father, and eventually spent five and a half years in Rome between 1695 and 1701. His style is regarded as an early form of Baroque, and he was influenced by both his father and Mattia Preti.

Francesco Vincenzo Zahra was a Maltese painter who mainly painted religious works in the Neapolitan Baroque style. His works may be found in many churches around the Maltese Islands, as well as in some private collections and museums. He is considered to be the greatest painter from 18th-century Malta.

Church of Our Lady of Sorrows, Pietà Church in Pietà, Malta

The Church of Our Lady of Sorrows is a Roman Catholic church in Pietà, Malta. It was established in the late 16th or early 17th century near a cemetery in which victims of the 1592–1593 Malta plague epidemic were buried. It was originally dedicated to Saint Roch, but after a convent was built next to it in the early 17th century it was rededicated to Our Lady of Sorrows. The church later gave its name to the town of Pietà which developed nearby, and the present building dates back to the mid-18th century when it was reconstructed. Both the church and the convent are currently in the hands of a Catholic youth ministry.
