Over the Counter was the original debut studio album by rapper Snoop Doggy Dogg that released in 1991. [1] However, the album was heavily bootlegged and released as a demo album instead. Guest appearances include Tha Dogg Pound, Dr. Dre, Nate Dogg, Warren G, George Clinton and others. The album was released only on cassette version. [2]

Snoop Dogg American rapper, singer-songwriter, record producer, television personality, entrepreneur and actor from California

Calvin Cordozar Broadus Jr., known professionally as Snoop Dogg, is an American rapper, singer, record producer, television personality, entrepreneur, and actor. His music career began in 1992 when he was discovered by Dr. Dre and featured on Dre's solo debut, "Deep Cover", and then on Dre's solo debut album, The Chronic. He has since sold over 23 million albums in the United States and 35 million albums worldwide.

Bootleg recording

A bootleg recording is an audio or video recording of a performance that was not officially released by the artist or under other legal authority. The process of making and distributing such recordings is known as bootlegging. Recordings may be copied and traded among fans of the artist without financial exchange, but some bootleggers have sold recordings for profit, sometimes by adding professional-quality sound engineering and packaging to the raw material. Bootlegs usually consist of either unreleased studio recordings, live performances or interviews with an unpredictable level of quality.

Tha Dogg Pound is an American hip hop duo formed in 1992, made up of West Coast rappers Kurupt and Daz Dillinger. They were signed to Death Row Records in their early careers and were key to the label's success. The duo made their first appearance on Dr. Dre's highly acclaimed debut album The Chronic (1992), appearing on several songs. They also appeared on Snoop Dogg's debut album Doggystyle (1993), and the Death Row soundtracks Murder Was the Case and Above the Rim. Their debut album Dogg Food was released in 1995. It was another addition to the controversy of hardcore hip hop due to the sexual and violent lyrics and went on to sell two million albums.

Background

It was this album, and not The Chronic, that was intended to be the debut album for both Snoop and the Death Row brand name. The albums were pulled off the production line and never had any official distribution project for the public market. Due to the fact that Death Row did not have total financial capability for supporting itself as a legitimate record label in 1991, their distributors; Priority Records, Sony Music and Time Warner, could not legally get these albums which they had pressed out to the streets.

The Chronic 1992 studio album by Dr. Dre

The Chronic is the debut studio album by American hip hop recording artist Dr. Dre. It was released on December 15, 1992, by his own record label Death Row Records and distributed by Interscope Records and Priority Records. Recording sessions for the album took place in June 1992 at Death Row Studios in Los Angeles and at Bernie Grundman Mastering in Hollywood. The album is named after a slang term for high-grade cannabis, and its cover is an homage to Zig-Zag rolling papers. It was Dr. Dre's first solo album after he had departed from hip hop group N.W.A and its label Ruthless Records over a financial dispute. On The Chronic, he included both subtle and direct insults at Ruthless and its owner, former N.W.A member Eazy-E. Although a solo album, it features many appearances by American rapper Snoop Doggy Dogg, who used the album as a launch pad for his own solo career.

Priority Records is an American distribution company and record label known for artists including N.W.A, Ice-T, Jay-Z, Snoop Dogg, Silkk the Shocker and Westside Connection. It also distributed hip hop record labels including Death Row Records, Hoo-Bangin' Records, No Limit Records, Posthuman Records, Rap-A-Lot Records, Rawkus Records, Roc-A-Fella Records, Ruthless Records and Wu-Tang Records. According to Billboard, "few record labels were as important to the rise of West Coast hip hop as Priority Records."

Other copies have the white background on the cover and inserts. Those are fake bootlegs pushed by another party. They show Death Row 1991 as the label on the tape backing. On the backings there is a supposed "promo photo" of Snoop with the 187 Highway sign; that photo was not taken until 1993 by Chi Modu! It is to be believed there are a very select few of these tapes that are actually considered authentic. They credit Future Shock Entertainment as the label. [3]
