Owen Bruynseels (born 1987) is a retired English rugby union player who played as a winger. [1] He spent his entire career with Ealing Trailfinders, with over 200 appearances, that saw his club rise from the 6th division of English Rugby all the way up to the RFU Championship (tier 2). An opportunistic try scorer he was one of the most prolific in National League 2 South history with 81 tries in four seasons. [2] [3] Since retiring from playing due to injury in 2015, he was inducted into the Ealing Trailfinders 'Hall of Fame' and remains at the club as team manager. [4]

Career

Early career

Owen made his first team debut for Ealing against Twickenham in 2003. [2] After a couple of seasons playing in London 2 North, Owen experienced his first silverware when his club were crowned league champions in 2005, winning all but one game on their way to the title. [5] The next year newly promoted Ealing finished second in London Division 1 and qualified for a playoff against the runners-up South West 1. With home advantage given to the Trailfinders due to a better overall league standing than opponents, Cleve, Ealing won emphatically, 48–17, to gain promotion to the National Leagues. [6]

Rise through the National Leagues

In 2007–08 despite being new boys to National Division 3 South, Ealing more than held their own, with Owen contributing 20 tries to a side that finished 3rd in the league and finished as the division's top try scorer. [7] After a second year in which Ealing finished 3rd once again, Owen scored 18 tries from just 19 appearances during the 2009–10 as his side agonisingly missed out on the promotion playoffs, being tied on 113 points with 2nd placed Rosslyn Park, who had a better win record. After missing out on promotion over the past 3 seasons, Ealing finally did it by winning the newly named National League 2 South title after an epic battle with runners-up Jersey. [8] It proved to be a record-breaking season for Ealing's players as Owen formed a part of a lethal strike force with fellow winger Phil Chesters as the two team-mates scored 102 tries between them. Owen got a career best of 32 tries (including 6 in one game) while Phil got an incredible 70 tries (an all-time English league record) as they destroyed defences on the way to the title, also becoming the top two try scorers in the division. Their debut season in National League 1 saw Owen and Phil Chesters continue their prolific partnership with 62 tries between them (Owen got 20) as they finished runners-up to fellow promoted side, Jersey, who took the only promotion place. In February 2012 Owen would be called up by the England Counties XV for their game against an Irish representative side at Preston Grasshopper's Lightfoot Green ground, scoring the final try in a 34–16 victory. [11] The 2012–13 season would see the club reach the highest point in their history as they won promotion to the RFU Championship, justifiably being deserving of their National League 1 title by finishing way ahead of second place club, Esher, with Owen contributing 15 tries to the title campaign. [12]

Championship and Injury

The 2013–14 season started badly for Owen as he was injured in the final pre-season game, meaning that he did not play his first game until October when he returned to the side for a British and Irish Cup game against Welsh side Cross Keys. [13] His return would not last long as Owen was injured for a second time that season – this time seriously as he broke his leg in a January league game against Moseley, ending his campaign in a year when he reached 200 club appearances for Ealing. [2] To add to his disappointment, his side were also relegated from the RFU Championship after a close scrap with Jersey. Although he made a handful of appearances during the 2014–15 season in National League 1 (which Ealing won), including a final try, Owen was unable to recover from the injuries suffered at the end of the last season and he was forced to retire after 12 seasons with the club. [14] He is currently employed at the club in the role of team manager.

Ealing Trailfinders Rugby Club is an English rugby union club, located in West London. The club's first team play in the RFU Championship after they won National League 1 in 2014–15.

The 2007–08 National Division Three South was the eighth season of the fourth division (south) of the English domestic rugby union competition using the name National Division Three South. New teams to the division included Barking who were relegated from the 2006–07 National Division Two while promoted sides included London Scottish (champions) and Ealing (playoffs) who came up from London Division 1, Mounts Bay who came up as champions of South West Division 1 and Luton who were Midlands Division 1 champions. In the case of Luton, Midlands league champions usually moved up to National Division Three North but due to number imbalances in that division, for this season, they would go into National Division Three South instead. The league system was 4 points for a win, 2 points for a draw and additional bonus points being awarded for scoring 4 or more tries and/or losing within 7 points of the victorious team. In terms of promotion the league champions would go straight up into National Division Two while the runners up would have a one-game playoff against the runners up from National Division Three North for the final promotion place.

National League 2 South is a level four league in the English rugby union system. It is one of two leagues at this level, with its counterpart, National League 2 North, covering the north of England. The format of the league was changed at the beginning of the 2009–10 season following reorganisation by the Rugby Football Union. The champions are promoted to National League 1. The runners-up play in a promotion play-off with the runners-up of National League 2 North; the team with the best record having home advantage. The bottom three teams are relegated, to either South West Premier or London & South East Premier.

Tristan Roberts is a rugby union who currently plays for Esher in National League 1, having previously been at US Cognac and Ealing Trailfinders. He has represented both the England Students and the England Counties XV and during his rugby career has progressed from playing in the fourth tier with Cinderford to playing in the Premiership with London Welsh. Tristan has played much of his career at fly-half and has a reputation as a very reliable points kicker who is also excellent at drop kicks.

The 2011–12 National League 1 is the third season of the third division of the English domestic rugby union competitions since the professionalised format of the second division was introduced. Birmingham & Solihull find themselves playing in this league following their relegation from the 2010-11 RFU Championship in the play-offs, whilst other newcomers to the league in this season are Ealing Trailfinders and Jersey, and Fylde, who won promotion to the league from the 2010–11 National League 2 South and 2010–11 National League 2 North respectively.

Phil Chesters is an English rugby union player who is currently playing for Chinnor in National League 1 having signed for the club for the 2017-18 season. Prior to that he had made his name at Ealing Trailfinders where he had also been part of the medical staff. His best position is winger and over his career he has proved to be a tremendous try scorer who has set multiple records in lower division English rugby with Ealing, notably all-time records of 42 tries in a season in tier 3 and an amazing 70 tries in a season in tier 4 – a record that is unlikely to ever be beaten. As of the end of the 2017-18 he has also become the National League 2 South all-time try scorer with 117 tries.

Ben Ward is an English rugby union player-coach who plays at fly-half. He has spent the bulk of his career at Ealing Trailfinders, being part of a team that has achieved five promotions in little over a decade as they have come up through the English league system – from tier 6 all the way up to tier 2. A dependable points kicker, he is one of the most prolific scorers in the history of National League 2 South with over 700 points in that division. Ben is currently Ealing's Director of Rugby as well as a member of the playing squad.

Mark Billings is an English rugby union player-coach who plays either on the Wing or as Full back. He has spent the bulk of his career at Southend, where he was club captain, and regular appearances for his club resulted in Billings becoming one of the top try scorers in National League 2 South history, with almost 90 tries in the competition. He is currently employed as a player-coach for Rochford Hundred.

Oliver "Ollie" Brennand is an English rugby union footballer, who last played as a winger for Fylde in National League 1. He is Fylde's record try scorer with over 200 tries, and is also one of the most prolific try scorers ever in both National League 1 and National League 2 North. As well as playing club rugby he has also been capped by England Counties XV and Lancashire – with whom he has won the Bill Beaumont Cup four times.

The 2017–18 RFU Championship, known for sponsorship reasons as the Greene King IPA Championship, was the ninth season of the professionalised format of the RFU Championship, the second tier of the English rugby union league system run by the Rugby Football Union. It was contested by eleven English clubs and one from Jersey in the Channel Islands. The competition was sponsored by Greene King for a fifth successive season. David Allen is a retired English rugby union player who spent the majority of his career at Blackheath, where his position was openside flanker. While at 'Club' Allen become the all-time try scorer in National League 1 history with 147 tries from 274 appearances. As well as playing for Blackheath he was also capped by England Counties XV and the Barbarians.

Neil Hallett is a retired English rugby union player who played at either full-back, centre or fly-half Neil is a coach at Wimbledon. An excellent kicker, Hallett is best known for his time at Esher where he scored over 1,300 points for the club in all competitions, and he is also one of the most prolific scorers in tier 3 history with over 1,400 league points scored from his time spent with at four different clubs including Esher and Ealing Trailfinders. As well as playing club rugby Hallett has also captained Surrey and been capped by the Barbarians and England Counties XV. he has a wife call Michele Hallett and 2 daughters called Sophia Hallett and Isabella Hallett

Guy Edwin Peter Thompson is an English rugby union player for Ealing Trailfinders in the RFU Championship, he plays flanker or number 8. Between 2013–2018 Thompson played 99 times for Wasps and has also previously played for Leicester Tigers in Premiership Rugby, Richmond F.C., in National League 2 South, and for Jersey Reds in National League 1 and the RFU Championship.

The 2018–19 RFU Championship, known for sponsorship reasons as the Greene King IPA Championship, is the tenth season of the professionalised format of the RFU Championship, the second tier of the English rugby union league system run by the Rugby Football Union. It is contested by eleven English clubs and one from Jersey in the Channel Islands. The competition is sponsored by Greene King for a sixth successive season. Clubs in the league also competed in the inaugural RFU Championship Cup.
