The 2016–17 Ranji Trophy was the 83rd season of the Ranji Trophy,the premier first-class cricket tournament in India. Unlike previous seasons,the 2016–17 tournament was played at neutral venues. Captains and coaches were supportive of the change. Chhattisgarh cricket team made their debut in the competition,becoming the 28th team to compete in this edition of the Ranji Trophy. Mumbai were the defending champions. Gujarat beat Mumbai in the final by 5 wickets to win their first title.

Mothavarapu Suryanarayan was an Indian first-class cricketer who was born on 1 February 1930 during Madras presidency. M. Suryanarayan is the first son of M.Baliah Naidu and the Grandson of Buchi Babu Naidu who is also known as the 'Father of South Indian Cricket' the doyen of Madras Cricket. He was also a member of the First Ranji Trophy triumph team of Tamil Nadu in 1954–1955,which the Madras team won against Holkar. He was a right-handed batsman and a right-arm medium bowler. The Hindu describing his Cricket,once said:" His batting resembles very closely that of his father -dashing and carefree -and his cover-drive,a joy to watch,has amazing impetus..."And it added that he had "enriched Madras sport as his father had". His only younger brother M.M Kumar represented in the Ranji Trophy.
The 2016–17 season is Hyderabad cricket team's 83rd competitive season. The Hyderabad cricket team and Hyderabad women's cricket team are senior men's and women's domestic cricket teams based in the city of Hyderabad,India,run by the Hyderabad Cricket Association. They represent the state of Telangana in domestic competitions.
