P. Kutumbaiah, born as Pudipeddy Kutumbaiah M.D., F.R.C.P. was professor of Medicine in India.

Dr P. Kutumbiah was born in India in 1892. He served in the Indian Medical Service and worked as a lecturer in chemistry and Surgery for the Madras Medical Service. He received M.D. from Madras Medical College in 1931. [1] In 1930 he obtained membership to the Royal College of Physicians in London. He became professor of Medicine at Andhra Medical College (1938-45) and later became professor of Medicine in Madras.

Besides the practice of medicine he was always interested in the history of medicine, particularly ancient Indian medicine. In 1947, along with some friends interested in this subject, he founded a society for the study of the history of medicine. In 1953, this society was converted into The Indian Association of the History of Medicine, and he was elected as its first President. [2]

He was professor of Medicine at Andhra Medical College and remembered as one of the best teachers of Clinical Medicine by his students. In his fond memory, the college instituted a Gold Medal awarded annually to the best student in Clinical Medicine. [3]

He wrote a book on Indian Medical History titled "Ancient Indian Medicine" published by Orient Longmans, Bombay in 1962. [4] Foreword is written by Dr. S. Radhakrishnan. He dedicated this book to his brother P. Chenchaiah. It was revised and published in 1969 and subsequently reprinted in 1974 and 1999. [5]

Ram Sharan Sharma was an Indian historian and Indologist who specialised in the history of Ancient and early Medieval India. He taught at Patna University and Delhi University (1973–85) and was visiting faculty at University of Toronto (1965–1966). He also was a senior fellow at the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London. He was a University Grants Commission National Fellow (1958–81) and the president of Indian History Congress in 1975. It was during his tenure as the dean of Delhi University's History Department that major expansion of the department took place in the 1970s. The creation of most of the positions in the department were the results of his efforts. He was the founding Chairman of the Indian Council of Historical Research (ICHR) and a historian of international repute.

Kasinadhuni Nageswararao, better known as Nageswara Rao Pantulu, was an Indian journalist, nationalist, politician, businessman, and a staunch supporter of Khaddar movement. He participated in the Indian independence movement and in the Indian National Congress party, including Mahatma Gandhi’s civil disobedience movement through salt satyagraha. He was conferred with the title Desabandhu by the people of Andhra Pradesh. He was a major financier of Congress activities in Andhra and Chennai and is also known for patenting Amrutanjan. He was conferred with the title Desoddhaaraka by the Andhra Mahasabha. In 1935, the Andhra University honoured him with Kalaprapoorna, an honorary doctorate of Literature.

Charles Donovan MD was an Irish medical officer in the Indian Medical Service. He is best remembered for his discoveries of Leishmania donovani as the causative agent of visceral leishmaniasis, and Klebsiella granulomatis as that of donovanosis. The son of a judge in India, he was born in Calcutta and completed his primary education in India, and continued secondary school in Cork City, Ireland. He graduated in medicine from Trinity College, Dublin and joined the Indian Medical Service. He participated in British expeditions to Mandalay in Burma, Royapuram and Mangalore in India, Afghanistan, and finally Madras, where he spent the rest of his service. He was professor at Madras Medical College from 1898 until his retirement in 1919.

Andhra Medical College is in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, India, and affiliated to NTR University of Health Sciences. Nidudavolu Venkatarao was an Indian littérateur, and historian in the Telugu language. He was regarded as "Jangama Vijnanasvarasvam" in Telugu. Venatrao was a Lecturer, Reader and Head of the Department of Telugu at the University of Madras. While he was working in Madras university, he undertook a little-known work tripurantakodaaharanam, and published it with elaborate annotations in 1935.

Professor A. Ranganadha Rao M.B.B.S., M.S., M.Ch., D.Sc. was an Indian urologist. He is the first Urologist from Andhra Pradesh and the first person to perform a kidney transplantation in Andhra Pradesh.

Dasari Prasada Rao is an Indian Cardiothoracic surgeon. He was noteworthy for introducing the first open heart surgery to the state of Andhra Pradesh in India and for pioneering advanced medical care at affordable costs. Dasari Prasada Rao has won numerous awards including in 2001 the Padma Shri award, a Civilian award bestowed by the Government of India.

Kadiyala Ramachandra (1919-2007) was an Indian medical doctor, poet, a former superintendent of the Government General Hospital, Chennai and a former head of the department of medicine at Madras Medical College. His efforts were reported behind the establishment of the Department of Oncology & Cancer Chemotherapy and the Rheumatic Care Unit at the General Hospital. He was a recipient of the fourth highest Indian civilian award of Padma Shri in 1974.

Nagarur Gopinath was an Indian surgeon and one of the pioneers of cardiothoracic surgery in India. He is credited with the first successful performance of open heart surgery in India which he performed in 1962. He served as the honorary surgeon to two Presidents of India and was a recipient of the fourth highest Indian civilian award of Padma Shri in 1974 and Dr. B. C. Roy Award, the highest Indian medical award in 1978 from the Government of India.
