POSTmatter is a London-based online magazine about contemporary art and culture in the digital age. It was founded in 2010 by Remi Paringaux, Alexander Dellal and Xerxes Cook as an iPad-only magazine named POST. [1] [2] [3] [4] The magazine has been edited by Louise Benson since 2014.

Background

Early issues of POST magazine on the iPad were identified with a unique suffix; the first and second issues were titled 'POSTgravity' and 'POSTperformance'.

"POST offers a map for others to follow," The New York Times stated in May 2011. [5]

The website was launched in 2013 under the name 'POSTmatter'. No further iPad editions were released following its launch, and POSTmatter was adopted as the official name of the online magazine. [6]

POSTmatter special projects

As part of the 54th Venice Biennale in 2011, POSTmatter created a physical pavilion and accompanying app titled ‘Commercial Break’ in partnership with Neville Wakefield and Dasha Zhukova. It featured the work of over 130 international artists, including Ari Marcopoulos, Aleksandra Mir, Raymond Pettibon, Cyprien Gaillard, Christian Jankowski and Agathe Snow. [7] [8] [9] [10] [11]

POSTmatter worked with artist Doug Aitken in 2012 to create an app-based experience based on his large-scale multimedia production ‘ALTERED EARTH’, commissioned by the LUMA Foundation. [12] [13]

POSTmatter exhibitions

In 2014, POSTmatter staged its first exhibition at the Accademia di Brera in Milan. A series of interactive installations were displayed, showing three fashion films that could be altered by human touch or movement. [14] [15] [16] [17] [18]

One of these installations, 'Ripple', was exhibited again in 2015 at Fashion Space Gallery, London, as part of the exhibition 'Digital Disturbances'. POSTmatter presented a 3-part talk series at the London College of Fashion to accompany the exhibition. [19] [20] [21] [22] [23] [24]

In 2015, POSTmatter took part in fig-2 at the Institute of Contemporary Arts, London. An exhibition was curated by POSTmatter that brought together photography, sound and video works, while artists, writers and curators were invited to participate in live writing events that were published online. POSTmatter relaunch

POSTmatter relaunched with a new website in 2016. The British Journal of Photography stated in September 2016, "POSTmatter is at the forefront of re-enchanting the scope of the digital magazine, becoming an essential voice on life and culture in the digital age." [28]

Doug Aitken American artist (born 1968)

Doug Aitken is an American artist. Aitken was born in Redondo Beach, California in 1968. Aitken's body of work ranges from photography, print media, sculpture, and architectural interventions, to narrative films, sound, single and multi-channel video works, installations, and live performance.

Berni Searle is an artist who works with photography, video, and film to produce lens-based installations that stage narratives connected to history, identity, memory, and place. Often politically and socially engaged, her work also draws on the universal emotions associated with vulnerability, loss and beauty.

Yi Zhou (周依) is a film director, writer, producer and multimedia artist who was born in Shanghai, China. At the age of eight she moved to Rome, Italy, and later graduated from the London School of Economics. After leaving university she embarked on a career in Paris, France, as an artist. Zhou has created 3D short art films shown at her solo exhibitions by the Venice Biennale, and has also shown work at the Sundance Film Festival and the Cannes Film Festival. She has also created commissioned by high-end brands such as Chanel, Hennessy and Bobbi Brown.

Henry Bond English writer, photographer, and visual artist

Henry Bond, FHEA is an English writer, photographer, and visual artist. In his Lacan at the Scene (2009), Bond made contributions to theoretical psychoanalysis and forensics.

Riyas Komu

Riyas Komu born in Kerala is a critically acclaimed multimedia artist and curator based in Mumbai. He has invested his time in art education and developing art infrastructure in India. Komu's works are inspired by social conflicts and political movements and topics like migration and displacement. His hyper-realistic oil portraits of people resemble socialist-realist propaganda art and indeed one of his portraits is strikingly titled “Why Everybody should Look Like Mao”. In 2007, Komu was one of two artists from India selected for the 52nd Venice Biennale by curator Robert Storr. Later, he went on to represent the Iranian Pavilion at the Venice Biennale in 2015. Komu also participated in the Jogja Biennale, Indonesia, 2011. Riyas born in 1971 in a small town in Thrissur District of Kerala. He lives and works in Mumbai.

Daniel Askill is an Australian filmmaker and artist who uses film, photographs, video installation and sculpture in his work. He has directed short films, music videos, commercials and fashion films. He is currently based between Sydney and New York.

Aïda Ruilova is an American contemporary artist.

Viviane Sassen is a Dutch artist living in Amsterdam. She is a photographer who works in both the fashion and fine art world. She is known for her use of geometric shapes, often abstractions of bodies. She has been widely published and exhibited. She was included in the 2011 New Photography exhibit at the Museum of Modern Art. She has created campaigns for Miu Miu, Stella McCartney, and Louis Vuitton, among others. She has won the Dutch Prix de Rome (2007) and the Infinity Award from International Center of Photography.

DIS (collective)

DIS is a collaborative project based in New York City. It was founded in 2010 by Lauren Boyle, Solomon Chase, Marco Roso, David Toro, Nick Scholl, Patrik Sandberg and Samuel Adrian Massey, and publishes DIS Magazine, a twist on a lifestyle and fashion magazine. It is now composed of Lauren Boyle, Solomon Chase, Marco Roso and David Toro.

Edson Chagas is an Angolan photographer. Trained as a photojournalist, his works explore cities and consumerism. In his "Found Not Taken" series, the artist resituates abandoned objects elsewhere within cities. Another series uses African masks as a trope for understanding consumerism in Luanda, his home city. Chagas represented Angola at the 2013 Venice Biennale, for which he won its Golden Lion for best national pavilion. He has also exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art and Brooklyn Museum.

Paul Kneale

Paul Kneale lives and works in London. Kneale's practice explores the impact of digital technology on our perception of reality and art. His works have been included in the Moscow International Biennale for Young Art 2016 and are part of important private collections such as the Rubell Family Collection and the Collezione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo. Since early 2015, he has been working closely with ARTUNER. He has taught at the Zurich University of Art and has contributed theoretical articles to Frieze and Spike magazine. He is also the author of the short story Ex Oriente Lux and of the eBook New Abject, a response to Julia Kristeva's 1980 text ‘Powers of Horror: An Essay on Abjection’. Kneale has also collaborated with major fashion brands including Nicholas Kirkwood and Versace.

Susanne Stemmer is an Austrian visual artist, director and photographer.
