Palentino (foaled 18 October 2012) is a retired Thoroughbred racehorse and active sire trained and bred in Australia. He won the Australian Guineas and Makybe Diva Stakes, both Group One races. He has won over 1.3 million dollars.

Thoroughbred Horse breed developed for racing

The Thoroughbred is a horse breed best known for its use in horse racing. Although the word thoroughbred is sometimes used to refer to any breed of purebred horse, it technically refers only to the Thoroughbred breed. Thoroughbreds are considered "hot-blooded" horses that are known for their agility, speed, and spirit.

The Australian Guineas is a Victoria Racing Club Group 1 Thoroughbred horse race for three-year-olds, run at set weights, over a distance of 1600 metres at Flemington Racecourse, in Melbourne, Australia in March during the VRC Autumn Racing Carnival. Total prize money is A$1,000,000.

The Makybe Diva Stakes is a Victoria Racing Club Group 1 Thoroughbred horse race at Weight for age conditions for three years old and older, over a distance of 1,600 metres held at Flemington Racecourse in Melbourne, Australia in September. Total prize money is A$750,000.

Career

Bred at Macleay Thoroughbred Stud in Tasmania, by Geoff and Jenny Watson, Palentino was sold as a yearling for $85,000. [1]

He had his first race at Ballarat on 30 September 2015, finishing 2nd by a head and winning $3910. A fortnight later, he had his first win at Stawell.

On 7 November 2015, Palentino contested a listed race for the first time, winning by over a length at Flemington. Jockey Michelle Payne, who had recently won the Melbourne Cup, said, "Darren sent him to the beach and I didn't know what to expect today. He's progressed with each trial and run and is shaping as a horse in the making." [2]

Flemington Racecourse is a major horse racing venue located in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. It is most notable for hosting the Melbourne Cup, which is the world's richest handicap and the world's richest 3200 metre horse race. The racecourse is situated on low alluvial flats, next to the Maribyrnong River. The area was first used for horse racing in March 1840.

Michelle J. Payne is an Australian jockey. She won the 2015 Melbourne Cup, riding Prince of Penzance, and was the first female jockey to win the event.

Melbourne Cup horse race

The Melbourne Cup is Australia's most famous annual Thoroughbred horse race. It is a 3200-metre race for three-year-olds and over, conducted by the Victoria Racing Club on the Flemington Racecourse in Melbourne, Victoria as part of the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival. It is the richest "two-mile" handicap in the world, and one of the richest turf races. The event starts at 3pm on the first Tuesday in November and is known locally as "the race that stops a nation".

After a 3 month spell, Palentino returned in the Group 3 Manfred Stakes. After being held up, he finished 7th in what was called an "unlucky" run. [3]

The Manfred Stakes is a Melbourne Racing Club Group 3 Thoroughbred horse race for three-year-olds at set weights with penalties run over a distance of 1200 metres at Caulfield Racecourse, Melbourne, Australia in late January or early February. Prize money is A$160,000.

On 20 February 2016, Palentino was first past the post in the C S Hayes Stakes, but was reduced to 2nd on protest, after opposing jockey Craig Williams claimed there was interference 900 metres from the finish line. The decision to strip Palentino of victory was, "met with a chorus of outrage from disgruntled racing fans across the country." [4]

The C S Hayes Stakes is a Victoria Racing Club Group 3 Thoroughbred horse race for three years old colts and geldings, at set weights with penalties, over a distance of 1400 metres. It is held annually at Flemington Racecourse in Melbourne, Australia in February. Prizemoney is A$160,000.

A fortnight later, Palentino was again subject to a protest after finishing first in the Group 1 Australian Guineas, with Tarzino's jockey Craig Newitt claiming interference with 600 metres remaining and again in the straight. This time the protest was dismissed, with stewards saying the opposing horse had also rolled towards Palentino. Jockey Mark Zahra said, "It was a shame we had to go through all that because you can’t enjoy the moment and then you have to sweat it out. It means a lot and I said after last time, I’ll cop that as long as we win the Guineas." [5]

Tarzino is a retired Thoroughbred racehorse and active sire bred in New Zealand and trained and Australia. He won the Victoria Derby and Rosehill Guineas, both Group One races. He has won over one and a half million dollars.

Palentino's next appearance was in the Friday night Alister Clark Stakes at Moonee Valley. After hitting the lead earlier than expected, he weakened in the final 100 metres and finished second behind Tally. [6]

Palentino returned in a listed race in August 2016 and was then unplaced in the Memsie. Returning to Flemington in September for the Group 1 Makybe Diva Stakes, he was first past the post for the fourth straight appearance at the track. Beating stablemate Black Heart Bart by a length, Zahra said, "He’s a genuine superstar. You’d love the Cox Plate to be here. The way he settled and found the line, there’s no reason why not to go for it. Today his turn of foot was electric." [7] Palentino contested another three Group 1 races for the rest of the campaign, failing to finish better than 8th. Travelling to Sydney for the first time, he came last in the Epsom Handicap. [8]

Following its usual pattern of commencing a campaign with a shorter race, Palentino finished 4th in the 1200 metre Australia Stakes and then 4th again in the C F Orr Stakes. Back at Flemington for the Group 2 Blamey Stakes, Palentino won the race, 3 lengths ahead of favourite Tosen Stardom. Darren Weir noted, "Today he did everything perfect." [8]

In April 2017, Palentino was retired to stud. [1] Its 2018 stud fee was $17,600. [9]

Northerly

Northerly was an Australian racehorse who is considered arguably Australia's best middle distance Thoroughbred horse of the early 2000s. Northerly, trained by Western Australian harness racing legend Fred Kersley, won nine Group One (G1) races, including the Australian Cup twice, and the Cox Plate, regarded as the Weight for Age championship of Australasia, also on two occasions.

Lonhro

Lonhro was a champion Australian racehorse who is now standing at stud. Nicknamed "The Black Flash", he was from the first crop of the champion Octagonal out of the Group One-placed Shadea, who also produced the Group One winner Niello. Lonhro raced from two to five years of age and won 26 races, including 25 stakes races, ranging in distance from 1,100 to 2,000 metres. These included 11 Group One wins and 18 wins at weight-for-age. He was bred and owned by Woodlands Stud and trained by John Hawkes. Lonhro's name is based on the stock exchange code of the London Rhodesian Mining and Land Company, LONRHO. This arose from his foaling description as "tiny but perfect", a label ascribed to Roland "Tiny" Rowland, CEO of the company. The horse's name is deliberately misspelt.

Rising Fast

Rising Fast was an outstanding New Zealand-bred Thoroughbred racehorse. In 1954 he became the only horse in history to win the Melbourne Cup, Caulfield Cup and Cox Plate races in the same season - the Spring Grand Slam - and since that time no Melbourne Cup winner has performed such a feat. He returned in 1955, again winning the Caulfield Cup but coming an unlucky second in the Melbourne Cup.

Sunline (1995–2009) was a New Zealand-bred Thoroughbred racehorse who was the world's highest earning racemare of her time, competing on 48 occasions for 32 wins, 9 seconds and 3 thirds to earn A$11,351,607. She won races in three different countries, Australia, New Zealand and Hong Kong. She won successive W.S. Cox Plates (2,040m), the richest Weight for Age (WFA) race in Australia. She also twice won the toughest mile race in Australia, the Doncaster Handicap, once as a three-year-old and then again as a six-year-old. She was named New Zealand Horse of the Year four times and is also the only horse ever to win the Australian Horse of the Year championship three times. The only horse besides Sunline to win as many major races in both Australia and New Zealand was Gloaming, who raced around 1915.

Lee Freedman Australian horse trainer

David Lee Freedman is an Australian thoroughbred racehorse trainer. and Hall of Fame inductee. In partnership with brothers Anthony, Michael, and Richard, he has been a prolific winner of Australia's major races in past 20 years, with four Golden Slippers, four Caulfield Cups, two Cox Plates, and five Melbourne Cups, including two of the three won by Makybe Diva. On 19 June 2007 he won the prestigious King's Stand Stakes at the United Kingdom's Royal Ascot racecourse with his champion mare, Miss Andretti.

Fields Of Omagh is a champion middle distance Australian Thoroughbred racehorse of the early-mid-2000s. He was a half-brother to the stakeswinners, King Brian, Malcolm and Timeless Grace.
