The Paleophytic is an era of time preceding the Mesophytic and the Cenophytic and succeeding the Proterophytic. The phytic eras are based on the evolution of plants, and differ from the "-zoic" eras, which are based on animal life. The Paleophytic begins in the late Ordovician Period with the rise of the vascular plants and continues until the Kingurian, when advanced gymnosperms took over the Earth's floral niches. [1] [2]

The definition of standardized international units of geologic time is the responsibility of the International Commission on Stratigraphy (ICS), a constituent body of the International Union of Geological Sciences (IUGS), whose primary objective is to precisely define global chronostratigraphic units of the International Chronostratigraphic Chart (ICC) that are used to define divisions of geologic time. The chronostratigraphic divisions are in turn used to define geochronologic units.
