Pantterit (English: Panthers) is a professional basketball club from Helsinki, Finland. The club was formed in 1938 and it has won the men's Finnish championship title for 14 times making it the most successful team in Finnish basketball history. Pantterit also has 5 women's Finnish championship titles.
Men
The club was formed in 1938 and were originally named Kiri-Veikot. Pantterit played in the very first season of Finnish championship in basketball in 1939. The club took its first championship title in 1944 and became the club to beat in two following decades. Pantterit became the first Finnish team to participate in international basketball competitions, as they played against polish Legia Warsaw in the 1958 season of Champions Cup. Pantterit beat Legia on the first leg (64-62), but lost the second leg (67-71) and were eliminated by aggregate score. In the 1959–60 season Pantterit beat their first round opponents HSG Wissenschaft HU from East Germany, but were relegated in the next round against KS Polonia from Poland. [1] [2]
Pantterit found their success again in early 1980s as they first won the championship in 1980 and took the cup next year. The victories made Pantterit eligible for international competitions and they did participate in the Cup Winner's Cup in 1982–83 season. They were relegated in the first round when they lost to Swedish Solna IK. [3]
Pantterit won their next title in 1991 when they took the Suomen Cup, the yearly national cup competition. They participated in the 1992–93 season of the European Cup, beating Tinex Norik Medvode from Slovenia in the first round. Swizz Pully Basket ended the team's cup journey on the second round. Pantterit also won the 1995 Suomen Cup but did not take part in international competitions. [4]
Pantterit struggled for their spot in the premier basketball league, Korisliiga and were relegated to Division I in 2000–01 season. After six seasons Pantterit were again relegated to a lower division in the 2007–08 season as well. [5]
In the 2014–15 season, the men's team are playing in Division III, the fourth highest tier of Finnish basketball.
Women
Pantterit women's team rose to the women's premier league, Naisten Korisliiga again for the 1998–99 season, for the first time after their last visit in the 1970–71 season. Pantterit had a strong team and gained instant success and won their first ever Korisliiga title in the 1999–00 season. Pantterit reclaimed their title in 2001 and 2002. They also won the championship in 2004 and 2006. The team were unfortunately dissolved after the 2006 championship win due lack of financial resources. They also gave up their place in the women's Baltic Basketball League. [6] [7]
Pantterit men's first team are currently playing Division III, a fourth tier basketball league in Finland. Pantterit women's first team is currently inactive.
Pantterit also has youth teams: 6 boys' teams and 5 girls' teams. Each team has a number of different sections for different neighborhoods. Pantterit youth teams generally come from eastern Helsinki. [9]
HIFK, the Idrottsföreningen Kamraterna, Helsingfors rf is a multi-sport association based in Helsinki, Finland. Formed in 1897 on the initiative of Georges Doubitsky and fellow students of the Svenska Reallyceum, the Swedish lyceum in Helsinki, it is the oldest continuously-operating Idrottsföreningen Kamraterna (IFK) organization in Finland. HIFK has sections in many sports, including athletics, bandy, bowling, football, ice hockey, and handball.
Kiekko-Espoo Naiset are an ice hockey team in the Naisten Liiga. They play in the Tapiola district of Espoo, Finland at the harjoitusareena of the Tapiolan urheilupuisto. The team was founded as Espoon Kiekkoseura or EKS in 1989 and has also been known as Espoo Blues Naiset and Espoo United Naiset during its tenure in the Naisten Liiga. Kiekko-Espoo have won the Aurora Borealis Cup as the Finnish Champions in women's ice hockey sixteen times, six more wins than any other team in league history; at least one Finnish Championship medal was won under each of the four names.
Helsinki Seagulls is a professional basketball team, based in Helsinki, Finland. The club plays in the Korisliiga, the highest tier of basketball in Finland.
The Korisliiga is the top-tier professional basketball league in Finland, comprising the top 12 teams of the country. In its current format, each team plays all other teams two times in the regular season, once at home and once away, for a total of 22 regular season games. The top six teams advances continues to upper stage and the bottom six teams plays lower stage after 22 games, 5 games at home and 5 games at away versus all other teams in stage. The best two teams from lower group joins to playoffs with upper group teams. Playoffs are played best of seven format, except the quarter-finals which are played best of 5 format. Pantterit holds the record for the most league titles won, with 14. The top level Finnish league for women is the Naisten Korisliiga.
Tapiolan Honka is a basketball club based in Espoo, Finland. Their men's team plays in Korisliiga and their women's team plays in Naisten Korisliiga, both on highest tiers of Finnish basketball.
FC Kontu is a football club from Helsinki, Finland. It serves Kontula in East Helsinki and the immediately surrounding area. The club was formed in 1967 under the name Kontulan Urheilijat, the name being changed in 1994. The men's football first team currently plays in the Kolmonen and their home ground is at the Kontulan liikuntapuisto. The club also run a Ladies team that play at the same level in Women's Football.

Lisa Ann Karčić is a Croatian American former professional basketball player. She was a member of the Croatian national team and competed with the team at the 2012 Summer Olympics. In 2011, she won the Icelandic championship with Keflavík.
Naisten Korisliiga is the highest tier of women's basketball in Finland. The competition was formerly known as Koripallon naisten SM-sarja and was renamed Naisten Korisliiga for the 2013-14 season.

The Finnish Basketball Cup is the highest level national domestic basketball cup competition of Finland. It is the second most important basketball competition in the country, after the top-tier level Finnish national domestic league, the Korisliiga. From 2014 to 2018, the competition was not contested.

The league comprises approximately 250 players across ten teams.
HPK Kiekkonaiset or HPK Naiset are an ice hockey team in the Naisten Liiga (NSML), the premier women's ice hockey league in Finland. They play in Hämeenlinna, a city in the Finnish south-central province of Kanta-Häme, at the Hämeenlinnan harjoitushalli, a secondary ice rink at Ritari-areena. HPK were the first team to be awarded the Aurora Borealis Cup as the winners of the Finnish Championship in 2011 and also won bronze in the 2011–12 IIHF European Women's Champions Cup.
Alavuden Peli-Veikotry or APV is a sports club in Alavus, Finland. APV was founded in 1953 as a speciality football club – tradition holds that it was the first specialty football club to be founded in rural Finland – but expanded to include other sports over time. The club now offers programs in football, futsal, ice hockey, and pesäpallo and is best known for its youth and junior teams. APV’s representative ice hockey teams play in the men’s fourth-tier II-divisioona and in the women’s second-tier Naisten Mestis. The club’s representative men’s pesäpallo team plays in the Suomensarja, the third-tier league below the Superpesis and Ykköspesis.
JYP Naiset or JYP Jyväskylä Naiset is a Finnish ice hockey team in the Naisten Mestis. Their home is the Jyväskylän harjoitusjäähalli in Jyväskylä, Central Finland. JYP Naiset have won the Aurora Borealis Cup three times, in 1997, 1998, and 2016.
PK-35 Vantaa is a football club based in Vantaa, Finland. The club is "dedicated to women's football" and its representative team plays in the Kansallinen Liiga, the top-tier women's league in Finland. PK-35 Vantaa has won the Finnish Championship six times and the Finnish Women's Cup four times. The club's home ground is the Myyrmäen jalkapallostadion in the Myyrmäki district of Vantaa.
Porin Ässät ry is a sports club based in Pori, Finland. The club's only programs are ice hockey and esports, but it used to have an association football program. Porin Ässät ry operates an ice hockey team in the Finnish Elite League. Porin Ässät ry also has junior teams for all age groups from U7 to U20. Porin Ässät ry also operate a women's ice hockey school and the girl's junior ice hockey department while also operating a skating school.
