Papri Basu is a Bangladeshi freedom fighter, teacher, social worker and women's rights activist. She was awarded Begum Rokeya Padak in 2019.

Biography

Basu was born on 2 March 1956 in Comilla to Pramath Chandra Dhar and Maya Dhar. [1] When she was in class 8 she led a protest to remove a textbook from the curriculum against the Pakistan government. She also went on a hunger strike in front of the Comilla Education Board which was part of their protest. [1]

When the Liberation War of Bangladesh started, Basu crossed the border and went to Tripura. She and others formed a cultural organization. They performed and earned money, which was donated for the treatment of injured freedom fighters. [1]

Basu's uncle Neetish Roy Chowdhury was a correspondent for Akashvani. [2] She helped her uncle to edit news and also wrote articles. Her article Manobikotar Proshne Indiraji was published in Anandabazar Patrika . [2]

After liberation, Basu came back to Bangladesh. She passed her matriculation examination in 1972. After that she passed her higher secondary examination in 1974 from Comilla Government Women's College. [2] She was then admitted into Chittagong University. She completed her graduate and postgraduate studies there. [2] After that she joined Ispahani Public School & College, Comilla as a teacher. Later, she quit her job and began to work for the welfare of the society. [2] She served as the vice president of Family Planning Association Bangladesh. She also worked for women's rights.

Basu received Begum Rokeya Padak in 2019 for her contribution to establish women's rights. [3] [4] [5]

Shamsunnahar Mahmud was a writer, politician and educator in Bengal during the early 20th century. She was a leader of the women's rights movement in Bengal pioneered by Begum Rokeya. Shamsunnahar Hall of the University of Dhaka and University of Chittagong was named after her.

The existing Bangladeshi honours system was created after Independence of Bangladesh. The most highest civilian honours are the Independence Award and Ekushey Padak. They are awarded every year. The awards are civilian awards for a broad set of achievements in fields such as Education, Arts, Civil Service, or Social Service and Liberation War. Awards were also bestowed posthumously and they are not given for foreign citizens.

Nawab Begum Faizunnesa Choudhurani was Zamindar of Homnabad-Pashchimgaon Estate in present-day Comilla District, Bangladesh. She is most famous for her campaign for female education and other social issues. In appreciation of her social work, in 1889 Queen Victoria awarded Faizunnesa the title of "Nawab", making her the first female Nawab in South Asia.

Begum Rokeya Padak, named after Begum Rokeya, is a Bangladeshi national honour conferred on individual women for their exceptional achievement. The award is given by the Ministry of Women and Children Affairs of the Government of Bangladesh. The award recognises the pioneering contribution of an individual in empowering women and raising women's issues.

Feminism in Bangladesh seeks equal rights of women in Bangladesh through social and political change. Article 28 of Bangladesh constitution states that "Women shall have equal rights with men in all spheres of the State and of public life".

Husna Banu Khanam was a Bangladeshi educationist, writer and Nazrul singer. She was a pioneer of Bengali Muslim women journalism. In 1999, she received the Ekushey Padak Award for her contribution in music, and in 2004, she received the Begum Rokeya Medal for her contribution to the socio-economic development of women by the Government of Bangladesh.

Begum Rokeya Day is the 9 December anniversary of the birth and death of Begum Rokeya, a Bengali writer, educationist, social activist, and advocate of women's rights. The day is organized and celebrated by schools, colleges and universities of Bangladesh, as well as the Bengali Government, as a tribute to her works and legacy. On that day, Bangladesh government confers Begum Rokeya Padak on individual women for their exceptional achievement.
