The World Games are an international multi-sport event comprising sports and sporting disciplines that are not contested in the Olympic Games. They are usually held every four years, one year after a Summer Olympic Games, over the course of 11 days. The World Games are governed by the International World Games Association, under the patronage of the International Olympic Committee.

Underwater rugby (UWR) is an underwater team sport in which two teams compete to score a negatively buoyant ball into the opponents’ goal at the bottom of a swimming pool. The 2005 World Games, the seventh World Games, were an international multi-sport event held in Duisburg, Germany from 14 July 2005 until 24 July 2005. Three other cities, namely Bottrop, Mülheim an der Ruhr, and Oberhausen, also held some of the competition events. More than 3,000 athletes competed in 31 official sports and 6 invitational sports.
Inka Grings is a German former international footballer who played as a striker. She played sixteen years for FCR 2001 Duisburg before joining FC Zürich Frauen. She also played for the Germany national team. Grings is the second all-time leading goalscorer in Germany's top division, the Frauen-Bundesliga, with 195 goals and claimed the league's top-scorer award for a record six seasons. Playing for Germany, she was the top-scorer at two UEFA European Championships. Grings was named Women's Footballer of the Year (Germany) in 1999, 2009 and 2010.

American football was introduced as a World Games invitational sport at the 2005 World Games in Duisburg. There was also an American Football tournament at the 2017 World Games in Wroclaw. Both times only a competition for the male sides was held with four national teams participating. In 2005 the participating countries were Germany, Australia, Sweden and France while in 2017 the US, Germany, France and Poland participated. The U.S. was represented by college players.
American football was a demonstration sport at the World Games 2005 at the MSV-Arena in Duisburg, Germany. The semi-finals were held on July 15 and the medal games two days later. The Final was won by host team Germany who beat Sweden 20–6. Bronze medal was won by France, who beat Australia 14–0
The 2005 Air Canada Cup was the third edition of the women's ice hockey tournament. It was held from February 10-12, 2005 in Duisburg, Germany. The Canadian U22 national team won the tournament, going undefeated over three games.
