Parastoo Ahmadi (born 21 March 1997 in Nowshahr) is an artist and singer from Iran. [1] Her performance of the Caravanserai Concert in one of Iranian caravanserais with optional hijab, broadcast live on her YouTube channel, garnered widespread attention. [2] [3]
Parastoo Ahmadi graduated in film directing from Soore University. [1] She began taking courses in solfège and voice training (in folk music and classical music) at the age of 14. [4]
During the 2022 protests in Iran, Parastoo performed the song From the Blood of the Youth of the Homeland . Consequently, in October 2023, a judicial case was filed against her. [5] [6] [7] [8]
In June 2023, "The Air of Freedom," a song featuring lyrics by Fatemeh Dogoharani, was released. According to Parastoo Ahmadi, the song was a tribute to the "Woman, Life, Freedom" movement. Three months later, she faced legal prosecution. [1] Her summons to Tehran's Security Court and the confiscation of her personal belongings created challenges for her artistic pursuits.
During the autumn of 2024, Parastoo Ahmadi held the "Caravanserai Concert" at a caravanserai while wearing non state-mandated attire. The live performance sparked widespread attention on social media. About her concert, she wrote: [9]
"I, Parastoo, the girl who wants to sing for the people I love. This is a right I couldn’t overlook—singing for the land I deeply adore. Here, at this point in our beloved Iran, where history and legends intertwine, hear my voice in this imaginary concert and imagine this beautiful homeland…"
In the Caravanserai Concert, Parastoo performed pieces like "Sar Kooye Doost," "Aziz Joon," "Kamar Bareek," "Mara Bebos," "Lahze Didar," "Cheh Sazam," and "Az Khoon-e Javanane Vatan." She was accompanied by musicians Ehsan Beyraghdar on piano, Soheyl Faghih-Nasiri on guitar, Amin Taheri on drums, and Amir Ali Pirnia on bass. [10]
The Iranian Judiciary announced that legal actions would be taken against Parastoo Ahmadi for performing music without a permit and not adhering to "legal and religious norms." According to Mizan News Agency, legal cases have been filed against those involved, and actions will be taken against other individuals connected to the event as well. [1] On 14th December 2024 Ahmadi was arrested in the Mazandaran province. Two of her musicians, Ehsan Birghidar and Sohail Faqih Nasiri, are also reported to be detained. [11] On 15th December 2024 Ahmadi's lawyer stated that she had been released after widespread outrage over her arrest. [12]

The Girls of Enghelab protests are protests against the compulsory hijab in Iran, part of the wider Iranian Democracy Movement. The protests were inspired by Vida Movahed, an Iranian woman known as the Girl of Enghelab Street, who stood in the crowd on a utility box on Enghelab Street in Tehran on 27 December 2017 during the 2017–2018 Iranian protests who tied a white headscarf, to a stick, and waved it to the crowd as a flag. She was arrested on that day and was released temporary on bail a month later, on 28 January 2018. Some people interpreted Movahed's action as being based on Masih Alinejad's call for White Wednesdays, a protest movement that the presenter at VOA Persian Television started in early 2017. Other women later re-enacted her protest and posted photos of their actions on social media. These women are described as the "Girls of Enghelab Street" and the "Girls of Revolution Street" in English sources. Some of the protesters however claim that they were not following Masih Alinejad's call. The protests intensified in 2022 due to the death of Mahsa Amini.

However, eyewitnesses, including women who were detained with Amini, reported that she was severely beaten and that she died as a result of police brutality, which was denied by the Iranian authorities. The assertions of police brutality, in addition to leaked medical scans, led some observers to believe Amini had a cerebral hemorrhage or stroke due to head injuries received after her arrest.

Echo of Silence is a book related to the issue of women's studies in Iran. Kameel Ahmady, a social anthropologist and researcher, supervised a research book titled "Echo of Silence", which is a study about child marriage in Iran. It was published on October 11, 2016, which is also the International Day of the Girl Child. The book is based on research that Ahmady and his colleagues conducted in seven provinces of Iran between 2015 and 2016. They aimed to understand the nature of child marriage in Iran and provide suggestions for social and cultural policymakers. The Persian version of this book was published by Shirazeh Publishing House and unveiled national in library and the English version published in 2017 by Nova publishing in USA.

Ahoo Daryaei, also known as the Science and Research Girl, is a 30-year-old Iranian doctoral student in French literature at Islamic Azad University, Science and Research Branch, Tehran. After being confronted and harassed by Basij paramilitary forces over Iran's compulsory hijab laws, with her clothing torn during the encounter, she responded in protest by removing her clothes and sitting partially undressed in the university courtyard on 2 November 2024. The Iranian state violently arrested and detained her, leading to her forced disappearance from public view. University officials denied any physical encounter with the student and claimed she had mental health issues.
