The Park Hotel and Cabins is a hotel complex located at 11137 County Road LLK in Republic, Michigan. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2013. [1]
John Consul was born in Crete in 1887; when he was 19, he immigrated to the United States and settled in New York City. [2] There he learned the trade of chef, and was then recruited to be a chef in other locations, first at Mackinac Island and then at the Douglass House in Houghton, Michigan. In Houghton, he met and married Esther Byttalla, a native of Republic. The Consuls soon moved to Chicago, where John Consul worked to start up a new restaurant for a prominent hotel chain. As the chain started hotels in various locations, the Consuls moved around the country, saving money with the intention of starting their own restaurant. [2]
However, the Great Depression intervened, wiping out the Consuls' savings. In 1930, they moved to Esther's hometown of Republic, and opened the Highway Lunch Restaurant on a shoestring. At that time, M-95 ran through Republic, and the restaurant was visible from the highway. When Prohibition was repealed, the Consuls changed the restaurant's name to the Pine Grove and then began a bar and night club. In 1939 they moved across the highway to a location near the Michigamme River. [2]
In 1941, John Consul bought the land from Bert Anderson near the Michigamme River that the hotel now stands on. Consul began work on improving the property, and in 1943 started building the hotel. The Park Hotel opened in 1946, although some of the cabins had not yet been competed. The Consuls asked their daughter Marcella and her husband Albert Schrader to run the hotel; the Schraders moved into the first floor of the hotel. John Consul continued working on constructing more cabins and a house on the property; however, construction stopped when he died in December 1948 at the age of 61. The Schraders continued to run the hotel until Al's death in 1962. After that, Marcella ran the hotel until her death in 1969. The Schrader's son Jon ran the hotel after that until the early 1970s, when M-95 was relocated to bypass the town. Jon Schrader closed up the hotel and moved to Florida. A lessee operated the hotel until about 1980, when it was closed permanently. [2]
The hotel was vacant until 1988, when Georgean and Nancy Perry purchased it with the intention of reopening it as a hotel. They did no work until 1998, when Nancy sold her portion to Georgean, who moved with her husband Melvin Perry into the hotel and began renovations. However, both Melvin and Georgean died within a few years, leaving the hotel vacant once more. In 2006, John Jilbert purchased the property, and hired a caretaker to live in it. [2]
The Park Hotel is located on a 15-acre (6.1 ha) plot along the Michigamme River covered with pine trees. The site contains a two-story log hotel near the street and 15 stone cabins along the edge of the river. It also contains two open woodsheds and the foundation and lower walls for an unfinished house. [2]
The hotel is a two-story hipped roof structure with walls of large vertical pine logs sitting on a concrete foundation and double-hung three-over-one wood windows. The hotel originally had a wraparound veranda on all sides sheltering a ground-floor porch and supporting a second-floor deck. The porch still exists in the front, but the entire verandah superstructure has been removed. The hotel originally had 12 rooms, with eight on the second floor and four on the first four on the first; the remainder of the first floor contained the lobby, a kitchen and dining room, and office space. The first floor rooms were later converted to a private residence. There was a lounge in the basement called the Nature Bar. The corridors on the second floor form a cross shape, reached by a stairway from the lobby. The interior is finished with hardwood floors and veneer paneling. [2]
The 15 cabins are located on a two-track loop behind the hotel. They are hipped roof structures made from cut stone, with concrete floors and pine veneer interior walls and ceilings. Twelve of the cabins are single-room structures with a kitchenette; the remaining three are two-bedroom units with a central living area. [2]

Entering dictionaries after World War II, the word motel, coined as a portmanteau of "motor hotel", originates from the Milestone Mo-Tel of San Luis Obispo, California, which was built in 1925. The term referred to a type of hotel consisting of a single building of connected rooms whose doors faced a parking lot and in some circumstances, a common area or a series of small cabins with common parking. Motels are often individually owned, though motel chains do exist.

Van Riper State Park is a public recreation area located in the Upper Peninsula of the U.S. state of Michigan, 17 miles (27 km) west of Ishpeming on US Highway 41. The state park's 1,055 acres (427 ha) lie partly in Michigamme Township and partly in Champion Township, both in Marquette County. The park has about 1.5 miles (2.4 km) of frontage along the eastern shores of Lake Michigamme, and 1.5 miles (2.4 km) of frontage along the shores of the Peshekee River.
M-95, designated the Leif Erickson Memorial Highway, is a state trunkline highway in the Upper Peninsula of the US state of Michigan. Running from Kingsford to near Champion in Humboldt Township, it is the main connection between Iron Mountain and Marquette along with US Highway 41.
The Wort Hotel was built in downtown Jackson, Wyoming, United States by brothers John and Jess Wort, who were significant figures in the transformation of the economy of Jackson Hole from ranching to tourism. The somewhat Tudor-style building was the first luxury hotel in Jackson. The two-story building features brick facing, with half-timbering and stucco on the second floor and a series of gables facing the street.
Rose Hill Manor, now known as Rose Hill Manor Park & Children's Museum, is a historic home located at Frederick, Frederick County, Maryland. It is a 2+1⁄2-story brick house. A notable feature is the large two-story pedimented portico supported by fluted Doric columns on the first floor and Ionic columns on the balustraded second floor. It was the retirement home of Thomas Johnson (1732–1819), the first elected governor of the State of Maryland and Associate Justice of the United States Supreme Court. It was built in the mid-1790s by his daughter and son-in-law.
The Grove, located in Jefferson, Texas, is an 1861 historic home that is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and is a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark. The house has also been called the most haunted place in Texas. The Grove's history dates back to the 19th century, when the property was purchased and the house that became known as "The Grove" was built. The Grove has been featured in the television series If Walls Could Talk on cable channel HGTV and was chosen "as one of the top twelve most haunted houses in America" by This Old House. The Grove was also named as one of the "eight scariest places in Texas" by Texas Monthly magazine. The house was also shown in William Shatner's Weird or What? in 2012. Additionally, The Grove was featured on Penn & Teller: Bullshit!Texas Highways magazine has featured The Grove several times, including in articles "Haunted Places in Texas" from October 1997 and "Haunted Jefferson" from October 2008.
The James Cant Ranch is a pioneer ranch complex in Grant County in eastern Oregon, United States. The ranch is located on both sides of the John Day River in the John Day Fossil Beds National Monument. The ranch was originally homesteaded by Floyd Officer in 1890. Officer sold the property to James Cant in 1910. Cant increased the size of the property and built a modern ranch complex on the west bank of the river. The National Park Service bought the ranch from the Cant family in 1975, and incorporated the property into the John Day Fossil Beds National Monument. The National Park Service used the main house as a visitor center until 2003. Today, the Cant Ranch complex is preserved as an interpretive site showing visitors an early 20th-century livestock ranch. The James Cant Ranch is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
The Roswell Spencer House was an historic property located in Pleasant Valley, Iowa, United States. The house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982. It has subsequently been torn down.
The Thomas Hynes House on East Main Street in Aspen, Colorado, United States, is a wooden building from the 1880s. In 1987 it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places as part of a group of historic properties in the city.
The Lake of the Woods Ranger Station is a United States Forest Service compound consisting of eight buildings overlooking Lake of the Woods in the Fremont-Winema National Forests of southern Oregon. All of the ranger station structures were built by the Civilian Conservation Corps between 1937 and 1939. Today, the compound serves as a Forest Service work center, and the old ranger station office is a visitor center. The ranger station is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The Claremont Hotel is a historic hotel on Claremont Road in Southwest Harbor, Maine. Built in 1883, the main hotel building is one of the only 19th-century hotels to survive on Mount Desert Island. The hotel facilities include 24 rooms in the main hotel, six rooms in the Phillips House, and 14 housekeeping cottages on a 6-acre (2.4 ha) parcel overlooking Somes Sound.
The Sexton Hotel, also known as Hotel Stuart, is a historical building located in Stuart, Iowa, United States. The building is a two-story, L-shaped, brick and brick veneer structure that was built in two parts. The oldest section was a frame building built by John Sexton in 1893 and housed a restaurant. It was moved to the north and the brick hotel wing was built by Sexton in 1907. The older structure, now the north wing of the larger building, was covered with brick veneer. The primary entry into the hotel is located in the canted entrance bay on the southwest corner of the building. There were 28 guest rooms, and the first floor of the north wing housed the dining hall. The first floor also housed a large lobby, the owners quarters, and some of the guest rooms.
Big Chief Restaurant, located at 17352 Manchester Road in Wildwood, Missouri, currently operates under the name Big Chief Roadhouse. It was also formerly known as Big Chief Highway Hotel and Big Chief Dakota Grill. The restaurant opened in 1928 as part of a tourist camp that included overnight accommodations for travelers on the newly opened U.S. Route 66 in Pond, Missouri, now incorporated within Wildwood. After the highway was later routed to bypass Pond, the business struggled to survive, operating as housing for government employees during World War II. Eventually the cabins were demolished, and the restaurant was used for other business operations. It was reopened as a restaurant in the 1990s.

Paddock Place, also known as the Augustus Paddock House is located at 1033 Lake Drive SE in Grand Rapids, Michigan. It was built as a single-family home and later converted into a banquet and event facility. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1985.
Foster's Log Cabin Court is located at 330-332 Weaverville Road in Woodfin, North Carolina, about five miles north of the City of Asheville. One of the first auto-oriented tourism facilities in the Asheville area, it features a number of one and two bedroom Rustic Revival log cabins and a dining lodge. It was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2017.
The Kocher Building, also known as La Giralda is a two-story steel and concrete framed Spanish Eclectic style commercial building in Carmel-by-the-Sea, California. It was designated as an important commercial building in the city's Downtown Historic District Property Survey, on September 4, 2002. The building is occupied by La Bicyclette Restaurant on the ground floor.
