The Parkade Plaza, also known locally as The Parkade, is an 11-level public parking garage in Spokane, Washington, United States. It was built for $3.5 million in 1967 by Sceva Construction Company, with concrete furnished by the Acme Concrete Company. [3] The structure was built to accommodate one thousand automobiles and achieved its record capacity on December 22, 1969, with 3878 cars, well beyond the 1967 capacity needs. [4] The architect for the project was Warren C. Heylman, who was also responsible for other notable works in and around Spokane including the Spokane Regional Health Building, the Riverfalls Tower Apartments, the original terminal of the Spokane International Airport, and the public library in Colfax, Washington. [5] The Parkade is notable for its connection to the Spokane skywalks and won an award for 'excellence in use of concrete' in 1968 that was presented directly to Warren C. Heylman. [6]
The site, situated on Main Street, between Howard and Stevens, was originally occupied by six old and deteriorating buildings. [7] The site was once occupied by a theater, first called the Pantages Theater then The Orpheum until 1958, when it was torn down to make way for parking. [8]
The Parkade was built as a private renewal project to promote business in Downtown Spokane. It shifted downtown traffic patterns with the goal of enlarging the tax base of the city core. “A first step for Spokane and other cities in revitalizing their central business district is to provide parking, this center, we feel, goes a long way towards filling that need here”, commented John G. F. Hieber. [7] Spokane Unlimited Inc., a nonprofit organization of the city's business leaders concerned with revitalizing the downtown area, advocated such a parking structure as one of the first major moves in halting congestion resulting from the auto. [9] “Creeping blight has been engulfing many business districts,” said Philip H. Stanton, president of Spokane Unlimited. “This is a way to halt it – make potential income from surrounding properties so high owners can't afford to leave it unimproved at present rental rates.” [7]
The new Parkade project encompassed not only a large parking structure but eight businesses that would occupy the second-level skywalk level, including R. Alan Brown Interior Design Studio, a Hickory Farms retail store, Early Dawn Ice Cream shop, Northwest Radio & TV store, and an art gallery hosted by the R. Alan Interior Design Studio in the rotunda under the helical down ramp of the parking center. [10] The Parkade concept was praised by John G. F. Hieber, Parkade president for “focusing a lot of attention on our city center... It has brought us tenants who until now had been expanding into outlying shopping centers.” [10]
Philip W. Alexander, managing director of the adjacent Bon Marche and vice president of the Parkade claimed that the Parkade isn't just a parking garage but a symbol of new life in the heart of Spokane. “We wanted and got a dramatic structure. It is aesthetic and functional and is already spurring plans for upgrading other properties around it.” [10]
In 2020, an investment firm bought the Parkade Plaza and started renovations that included replacing structural supports, new lighting, repainting the exterior, and modernizing the mechanical equipment in the building with energy efficient units. The garage reopened in October 2023. [11]
The Parkade incorporated many new and innovative design features for a parking structure. The skywalks that circle the structure were the first of its kind found on a parking center and was one of the few 'modern' parking facilities with a roof, a realistic and sensible solution given the climate of the region. [12] The design separated pedestrian and automobile entrances and exits, a consideration not found on similar parking garages of the time period. Floors in the garage are sloped to allow for maximum parking spaces, the architect commented, “All the floors are sloping in this thing – parking structures aren't easy to design.” [13] Light, long columns in the exterior design were used to create a vertical effect. Light arches, a 'working arch', creates a wide overhang at the top, protecting the white outer walls and shielding the structure from bad weather. [12] A striking feature of the center is its sculptured tower extending 175 feet above the ground and far above the main structure. Its major function is housing the mechanisms for the passenger elevators as well as serving as a beacon to motorists signaling a safe place to park their vehicles. [12] And people were the center of the design claimed the architect Heylman, “There will be a news stand and outdoor restaurant with brightly colored umbrellas, a city ticket booth, and other pleasant facilities. The environment is designed for people – not things.” [13]

The first known multistorey facility was built in London in 1901 and the first underground parking was built in Barcelona in 1904. The term multistorey is almost never used in the US, because almost all parking structures have multiple parking levels. Parking structures may be heated if they are enclosed.
Expo '74, officially known as the International Exposition on the Environment, Spokane 1974, was a world's fair held May 4, 1974, to November 3, 1974, in Spokane, Washington in the northwest United States. It was the first environmentally themed world's fair and attended by roughly 5.6 million people. The heart of the fair park grounds was located on Canada Island, Havermale Island, and the adjacent south bank of the Spokane River, comprising present-day Riverfront Park, in the center of the city.

The Houston tunnel system is a network of subterranean, climate-controlled, pedestrian walkways that links 95 full city blocks 20 feet (6 m) below Houston's downtown streets. It is approximately six miles (9.7 km) long. There are similar systems in Chicago, Dallas, Oklahoma City, Montreal, and Toronto. Architectural historian Stephen Fox has stated that the idea for the tunnel system came when the Bank of the Southwest Building was "linked by tunnel to the 1010 Garage and the Mellie Esperson Building" in 1961.
The Fox Theater in Spokane, Washington is a 1931 Art Deco movie theater that now serves as a performing arts venue and home of the Spokane Symphony. It was designed by architect Robert C. Reamer, notable for his design of the Old Faithful Inn in Yellowstone National Park. It was part of the Fox Film Corporation Empire founded by studio mogul William Fox. The theater opened September 3, 1931, and showed films continuously until it closed September 21, 2000, after an engagement of the movie Gladiator starring Russell Crowe.
Downtown Spokane or Riverside is the central business district of Spokane, Washington. The Riverside neighborhood is roughly bounded by I-90 to the south, Division Street to the east, Monroe Street to the west and Boone Avenue to the north. The topography of Downtown Spokane is mostly flat except for areas downstream of the Spokane Falls which are located in a canyon; the elevation is approximately 1,900 feet (580 m) above sea level.
Spokane Convention Center is the primary convention center in Spokane, Washington, in the northwest United States, and consists of two interconnected buildings along the south bank of the Spokane River in downtown Spokane. The facility, owned and operated by the Spokane Public Facilities District, is part of a larger campus, historically referred to as Spokane Center, that also contains the adjacent First Interstate Center for the Arts which is connected to the Davenport Grand hotel across the street via a skywalk.
The H. & S. Pogue Company was a Cincinnati, Ohio based department store chain founded by two brothers, Henry and Samuel Pogue. They came from County Cavan, Northern Ireland, to Cincinnati and worked in their uncle's dry goods store. They later were able to buy him out and H. & S. Pogue Dry Goods Company was established in 1863 at 111 West Fifth Street. Brothers Thomas, Joseph, and William Pogue would eventually join the enterprise.
River Park Square is a shopping mall and entertainment complex in Spokane, Washington. The shopping center was originally opened in 1974. Following years of decline, the center was redeveloped in 1999 using public and private funds in an effort to revitalize downtown Spokane. The mall, still privately owned by Cowles Company, is anchored by Nordstrom and contains an outpost of AMC Theatres.

The 100-acre (40 ha) park is situated along the Spokane River and encompasses the Upper Spokane Falls, which is the largest urban waterfall in the United States.

The Ridpath Hotel is a complex of four buildings in Spokane, Washington – the Ridpath Tower, the Halliday Building, the Y Building, and the Executive Court building. The Ridpath Tower, the main portion of the hotel, was designed by San Francisco architect Ned Hyman Abrams and is the second iteration of the Ridpath Hotel – the original building was destroyed by fire in 1950. The hotel, originally opened in 1900 and closed in 2008, and has now been fully renovated and opened as a low-income apartment complex called Ridpath Club Apartments in 2017. It has the distinction of being Spokane's longest continuously run hotel through those 108 years. The Ridpath reopened as the Ridpath Club Apartments in March 2018. The building offers the first micro apartments available in the city, which are essentially a converted hotel room designed to be affordable housing units or workforce housing.
High Bridge, a railroad bridge over Latah Creek in Spokane, Washington, was constructed in 1972 by the Burlington Northern Railroad, following that railroad's creation in 1970 through the merger of the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy, Great Northern, Northern Pacific, and Spokane, Portland & Seattle railways. The bridge links the former Northern Pacific mainline with the former Great Northern and Spokane, Portland & Seattle lines to the west. The Latah Creek railroad bridge and two bridges carrying Interstate 90 and Sunset Highway cross High Bridge Park and the Latah/Hangman neighborhood of Spokane from Downtown Spokane on the east into the West Hills and Grandview/Thorpe neighborhoods to the west.
The STA Plaza, is a transit center located in Downtown Spokane, Washington. It is the main hub of customer service and transit operations for the Spokane Transit Authority (STA), with 31 out of its 52 bus routes connecting with The Plaza. Transit operations through the Plaza resemble that of an airline hub, with bays of buses arriving and departing in waves, providing timed transfer opportunities for passengers.
Project 200 was an ambitious waterfront redevelopment initiative launched in 1968 in Vancouver, British Columbia. Named for its initial budget projection of $200 million, the project aimed to revitalize the area north of Cordova Street, stretching from Howe Street to Abbott Street. It was conceived as a modernist mixed-use complex, which at the time was believed to be the largest single development planned in Canada.

The listing includes 14 contributing properties, nine of which are considered primary and five are considered secondary.
Spokane and its neighborhoods contain a patchwork of architectural styles that give them a distinct identity and illustrate the changes throughout the city's history. Spokane has a rich architectural history for a western city of its size and much of it is a product of its circumstances at the turn of the 20th century when as a rapidly growing city, the Great Fire of 1889 destroyed 32 blocks of the city center which was quickly rebuilt in a more grand fashion by a community flush with money coming from regional mining districts. Many of the architects that found work in the city and building on the blank slate of the downtown commercial district became highly esteemed architects such as Kirtland Cutter, who has been credited with giving the city a distinctive character. In particular, the city has a high concentration of Romanesque Revival style institutional and commercial buildings and American Craftsman bungalow residences. The architecture of Spokane gained national recognition in industry publications in the early 20th century.
The Desmet Avenue Warehouse Historic District is a 2 acres (0.81 ha) historic district in the Logan neighborhood just outside the city center of Spokane, Washington which was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1997. The listing includes six contributing properties, two of which have subsequently been demolished. The district was notable for its tight collection of early-20th century structures over just two city blocks that all served like purposes. Of the four remaining structures, only one is still used for a purpose similar to what it was built to serve. The two easternmost structures are now part of the Gonzaga University campus, which surrounds the eastern half of the district to the north, east and south.
