History

It started in 1962, by industrialist M. A. Hashem with commodity trading. [2] Now it owns over 70 subsidiaries from tobacco to consumer goods, furniture, textile and the IT sector. It has split into two groups to improve management of its subsidiaries - Partex Holdings and Partex Star Group. [5]

Partex's companies are in nearly all sectors, including food and beverages, plastics, fabrics, cotton, sugar, paper, jute, shipping, furniture, agribusiness, oil, cables, aviation, PVC, telecommunication, logistics, fisheries, education, services, IT, denim fabric industry and many more.

M. A. Hashem also founded two leading private banks in Bangladesh – The City Bank and United Commercial Bank Limited (UCB).

Jute is a long, soft, shiny bast fiber that can be spun into coarse, strong threads. It is produced from flowering plants in the genus Corchorus, which is in the mallow family Malvaceae. Transcom Group Limited is a Bangladeshi business conglomerate. The businesses under this group include beverage, pharmaceuticals, newspaper, radio channel, electronics, foods, etc. Transcom is the local agent or comprador of international brands. This group employs more than 10,000 people. Transcom Group is one of the oldest and biggest companies in Bangladesh. Their operation in Bangladesh initially started in 1985 as a tea plantation company.

Adamjee Group of Companies is a conglomerate company based primarily in Karachi, Pakistan. The group was headed by Sir Adamjee Haji Dawood.

Akij Group is one of the largest Bangladeshi industrial conglomerates. He was the founding director of Mediaworld and Chairman of Mediastar, which owned The Daily Star and Prothom Alo newspapers respectively. Both are the nation's leading English and Bangla newspapers.

M. A. Hashem was a Bangladeshi businessman and the founding chairman of Partex Group. He served as member of Parliament from the Bangladesh Nationalist Party.

The Government agencies in Bangladesh are state controlled organizations that act independently to carry out the policies of the Government of Bangladesh. The Government Ministries are relatively small and merely policy-making organizations, allowed to control agencies by policy decisions. Some of the work of the government is carried out through state enterprises or limited companies.

James Finlay & Co was formed in 1750 and under the leadership of Kirkman Finlay became one of Scotland's leading cotton manufacturers and merchants. In the 1860s the firm came under the control of John Muir and diversified into Indian tea plantations. The cotton business was eventually closed and, after an unsuccessful period of diversification, Finlay concentrated on its core interests of tea and other agricultural produce. In 2000, the firm was acquired by John Swire & Son.

Bengal Group is a Bangladeshi conglomerate. It was established in 1969. It includes Bengal Plastic the largest plastic manufacturer in Bangladesh. Morshed Alam, a member of parliament from Awami League, is the chairman of the Bengal Group of Industries. The Vice chairman of the group is Md Jashim Uddin, younger brother of Morshed Alam.

Abul Khair Group is a Bangladeshi diversified conglomerate based in Dhaka. Abul Kashem is the chairperson and Abul Hashem is the managing director of Abul Khair Group. Abu Syed Chowdhury is the deputy managing director and Shah Shafiqul Islam is the group director. All four are sons of Abul Khair.

Deshbandhu Group is a Bangladeshi diversified conglomerate based in Dhaka. Golam Mostafa is the Chairperson and Golam Rahman is the Managing Director of Deshbandhu Group. It headquarters in Mostafa Centre, Banani, is located inside a residential neighborhood.

Sajeeb Group is a Bangladeshi diversified conglomerate based in Dhaka known for their processed foods. Md. Abul Hashem is the Chairperson of the Group.

Uttara Group of Industries is a Bangladeshi diversified conglomerate based in Dhaka founded by Giridhari Lal Modi, a Marwari businessman.
