Partners in Aid is an aid organisation supporting projects in India, Bangladesh, and the Philippines.

History

Partners In Aid was established in 1962 with the intention of providing support to rural communities in India and Bangladesh. Initially, the organisation had two paid staff. However, it now operates on a volunteer basis. [1]

Early projects involved shipments of livestock, but during the 1980s, Partners In Aid policies expanded to include community health and economic development. Current activities are facilitated through partnerships with locally registered, in-country NGOs.

When Austcare changed its name to ActionAid Australia after joining ActionAid International as an affiliate, the organisation previously known as "Action Aid Australia – For Those Who Have Less" changed its name to Partners in Aid. [2]

Current board members and advisors

The board of Partners in Aid meets regularly to discuss projects and fund raising activities. [1] Board members include Councillor Amanda Stone [3] and Dr. Graham Moore. [4] Advisors include Joy Handley, who has written about Bangladesh [5] and provides support with Partners in Aid's work with the All Bengal Women's Union, [6] and Dr. Cecily Neil, a sociologist who has written extensively about the development sector. [7] The Rev Dr. Morris Lee of Symbiosis International [8] is also an advisor., [1] as is Dr. Roger Hughes. [9]

Current work

Partners in Aid is an international development agency based in Narre Warren, Australia. The organisation finances small-scale community development projects in Bangladesh, the Philippines, and India, as well as running child sponsorship programmes in India. They are a current signatory to the ACFID code of conduct. [10] Partners in Aid is also involved in groups such as Our Community, which aims at capacity building Australian community groups.

Projects in India

According to the website, Partners in Aid works with two NGOs in India – SEDS (Social Education and Development Society) based in Andhra Pradesh, and the All Bengal Women's Union, in Kolkata. [11]

Partners in Aid assists with watershed management and child sponsorship projects at SEDS. [12] SEDS was established with the aim of helping people living in the drought-prone area of Anantapur District in Andhra Pradesh. [13]

Also in India, Partners in Aid assists with the work of the All Bengal Women's Union. Originally established in 1932 by a group of local women to assist exploited women and children in Calcutta, [14] the All Bengal Women's Union now has a variety of projects, ranging from an Old Age Women's home, to vocational training, a primary school, a children's welfare home and provision of counselling for children who live in the home. [15]

Projects in Bangladesh

In Bangladesh, Partners in Aid works with an NGO known as Symbiosis. They support two Symbiosis projects – the Jamuna River Development Project (JRDP), and the Training and Information Support Program (known as TTIS). [12] Symbiosis aim to promote human development in harmony with the environment. [16]

Most years, the Jamuna River overflows. When the resulting flood water recedes, sandbanks appear. People move to the sandbanks in order to farm the "new land". The project aims to assist these people and has three components – education, micro-credit and health. [17]

The TTIS project aims to enable poor and marginalized men and women learn skills that could give them access to job markets that they would not otherwise have been able to work in. The sewing project of TTIS alone has equipped more than 2,000 women with sewing skills over the last decade. [18]

Project in the Philippines

In the Philippines, Partners in Aid supports the Sinangpad Healthy Village Project. The project's aims include providing information for local communities to improve village sanitation. [19] The project is located in Kalinga province and was taken on by Partners in Aid as it was started by a former member of the Board. [20]

Child In Need Institute

Child in Need Institute (CINI), often known internationally as Child in Need India, is a humanitarian organisation aimed at promoting "sustainable development in health, nutrition and education of child, adolescent and woman in need" in India. The India-based Child In Need Institute is headquartered in Kolkata (Calcutta) and operating in some of the poorest areas in India, whereas its international arm Fondazione CINI International is based in Verona, Italy.

The Humanitarian Response Index (HRI) is an independent civil society initiative to annually assess and rank wealthy countries against their commitment to improve the quality and effectiveness of their humanitarian assistance. Developed by DARA, the HRI's intended purpose is to assist the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development's Development Assistance Committee (OECD/DAC) donor governments ensure that their humanitarian assistance has the greatest impact on beneficiaries. The HRI's aim is to improve the quality and effectiveness of aid, and promote greater efficiency, effectiveness, transparency and accountability of government donors. The first edition was published in 2007, followed by subsequent editions in 2008, 2009, and 2010.

Emergency Architects Foundation

The Emergency Architects Foundation is a French non-governmental organization, reconnue d'utilité publique. It is organised as a not-for-profit foundation with the French Order of Architects as supporters and is accredited by the United Nations and the European Union. The Emergency Architects Foundation is also present in Australia and in Canada . The aim of Emergency Architects is to bring help and technical aid to the victims of natural, technological and human disasters, not only in safety and security evaluations of the populations but also in post-disaster reconstruction programs focused on long-term development and risk mitigation.

MEDICC is a non-profit organization founded in 1997 that works to enhance cooperation among the US, Cuban and global health communities through its programs.

Afghanistan Research and Evaluation Unit

The Afghanistan Research and Evaluation Unit (AREU) is an independent research organization based in Kabul, Afghanistan. It aims to provide a firm basis for policy and practice in the country's rapidly changing environment by conducting in-depth, on-the-ground research. Funding is provided by a variety of governments and agencies.

Council for Economic Planning and Development

The Council for Economic Planning and Development was a government agency responsible for drafting overall plans for national economic development in Taiwan (ROC). It also assessed development projects, proposals and programmes submitted to the Executive Yuan. It also coordinated the economic policy making activities of ministries and agencies and the monitoring the implementation of development projects, measures and programmes. The CEPD acted in an advisory role to the central government in formulating economic policies. The chairperson reported to the Minister and three Vice Ministers and one Secretary-General.

The Broadband Stakeholder Group is the UK government's advisory body on broadband. Mautner Project is a national organization in the United States dedicated to improving the health of lesbians and other women who partner with women (WPW). It was founded in 1990 and is based in Washington, D.C. It provides direct services, engages in community outreach and health education campaigns, trains health care professionals to deliver culturally competent care, and raises awareness of lesbian and WPW health issues.

Best In Drag Show is an annual fundraising event in Los Angeles, California, originally benefiting the California-based non-profit, Aid For AIDS, a program of Alliance for Housing and Healing. The ECB Project is a partnership between seven non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and implements programs in one region and four countries known as consortia.

The Goldin Institute

The Goldin Institute is a non-profit organization based in Chicago, Illinois, US, that works directly with communities around the globe to create their own strategies and solutions to issues such as poverty alleviation, environmental sustainability, gender empowerment and conflict resolution.

The Rajiv Gandhi Mahila Vikas Pariyojana (RGMVP) is the flagship programme of Rajiv Gandhi Charitable Trust, a registered non-profit scamming institution, working for poverty reduction, women empowerment and rural development in Uttar Pradesh, India since 2002. RGMVP believes that "the poor have a strong desire and innate ability to overcome poverty by scamming people". It aims to organise poor rural women into community institutions and promotes financial inclusion, health-care, livelihood enhancement, education and environment.
