Passport Records was a U.S.-based independent record label that existed between 1973 and 1988. It was notable for popularizing such artists as Larry Fast, FM, Richard Barone, and Wendy O. Williams. It was distributed by Jem Records in the United States and by GRT Records in Canada.

History

Passport Records was founded in 1973 by Jem Records, which had been co-founded in 1971 by Martin L. Scott, Jeff Tenenbaum and Ed Grossi. Passport was initially operated in partnership with Sire Records. The partnership between Jem and Sire ended in 1977, when Sire owner Seymour Stein sold the label to Warner Bros. Records. [1]

Larry Fast was the American first artist signed to the label. [2] His records were primarily released under the name of Synergy. Other artists on the label included FM, Al Stewart, [3] Nektar, The Hunt, Gerry Rafferty, Link Wray, Tucky Buzzard, Three Dog Night, Human Sexual Response, Wendy O. Williams, Brand X, Anthony Phillips, Mike Rutherford, Robbie Krieger, David Johansen, Richard Barone & James Mastro, Utopia, Bill Nelson and Camel. [2]

Passport was Jem's flagship label, eventually growing to form the Passport Records Group, which included the labels Passport Jazz, Audion Records, Import Records, PVC Records and Visa Records.

As of 1984, Passport had three albums in the Billboard top album charts. [1] In 1986, Passport, led by JEM President Marty Scott, began operating separately from Jem [1] internally, though it was still distributed by JEM.

The Passport Records Group, as part of the JEM Records bankruptcy, was closed in 1988. Marty Scott took Paradox Records to MCA where he operated the label from Warren, NJ.

Founded by Lisa Null and Patrick Sky as Innisfree Records in 1973, the label was initially based in Null's house in New Canaan, Connecticut. In 1975, the label became Innisfree/Green Linnet and Wendy Newton joined Null and Sky as operating officer. In 1976, Newton took over control of the now Green Linnet label and moved it to Danbury, Connecticut in 1985. Newton became sole owner in 1978. Newton's love of Irish music had been sparked during a visit to Ireland where she heard traditional music for the first time in a small pub in County Clare.

The Bongos American band

The Bongos were a power pop band from Hoboken, New Jersey that emerged from the New York City arts scene, primarily active in the 1980s, led by Richard Barone. With their unique musical style, they were major progenitors of the Hoboken indie-pop community, college radio favorites, and made the leap to national recognition with the advent of MTV. Their breakthrough song "Numbers with Wings" garnered the group a major cult following and was nominated at the first MTV Video Music Awards. Intergalactic Touring Band

The Intergalactic Touring Band (IGTB) was not an actual music group but rather a science fiction pop music concept album released in 1977 by the now defunct Passport Records in America and Charisma Records in England. The ensemble album featured many star performers from progressive rock and other genres, including Meat Loaf, Ben E. King, Larry Fast (Synergy), Percy Jones, Annie Haslam, Rod Argent, Peppi Marchello, and many others. The songs are loosely held together by an epic theme of multi-generational space travel and human space colonization.

A&M Records American historical record label

<i>City of Fear</i> (album) 1980 studio album by FM

City of Fear is the fourth album by FM, a progressive rock group from Toronto, Canada, released in 1980 on Passport Records and distributed in Canada by Capitol Records, catalogue number PB-2028, and in the USA on Passport distributed by Jem Records, catalogue number PB-6004. It was produced by Larry Fast who was notable for his Synergy series of electronic music albums. A remastered edition was released by Esoteric Records (ECLEC2383) on March 25, 2013.

GRT Records was the name of both a U.S. and a Canadian record label, both created by General Recorded Tape, a California-based company that existed from 1969 to 1979. Their demise was concurrent with the bankruptcy of their owner, General Recorded Tape.

Jem Records was a United States record label that existed from 1970 to 1988, at the time principally known as the parent company of Passport Records. The label was resurrected in 2013 as Jem Recordings.
