Career
McDonough has been a radio talk show host and producer. He is the president of the Maryland Leadership Council and the Future Leaders of America. He is a founding member of the Maryland Coalition Against Crime. He is a member of the Route 40 Business Civic Association and the Essex-Middle River-White Marsh Chamber of Commerce. He is also active with the Hawthorn Civic Association,the Joppa Residents Council,and the Harford County Pro Life group.
McDonough is also a part of the President's Rally for America and the Classroom Coalition since 2004. He serves as the host for "Inside Annapolis",which is produced by Harford Community College Television. He is co-chair of the Annual Flag-waving Tribute to Victims and Families of 9–11.
McDonough is known for his continual push to make English the official language for the State of Maryland.
In March 2007,a resolution was sponsored by State Senator Nathaniel Exum calling for the state of Maryland to officially apologize for its role in slavery. McDonough criticized the bill as being a "superficial gesture designed to make people feel guilty". [4] Additionally,he mentioned that,"I don't think apologies solve anything." McDonough was one of six dissenting votes in the House. Slavery existed in Maryland since 1642,was legally formalized in 1664,and was abolished under Maryland law by a new state constitution in 1864.
In July 2007,McDonough called for the impeachment of Montgomery County Circuit Court Judge Katherine Savage who released a non-English-speaking rape suspect when he demanded a court-appointed interpreter and none were available. The suspect speaks Vai,a West African language. Judge Savage claimed that not having an interpreter denied the suspect his Constitutional right to a speedy trial,as provided by the Sixth Amendment to the United States Constitution. Delegate McDonough maintained that the defendant did not need an interpreter,as he had attended both high school and college in the U.S.,and had been successfully interviewed (in English) four times during the course of the investigation.
McDonough's circulated widely in early 2012 as he mounted a legislative challenge to the neighboring District of Columbia's Wildlife Protection Act of 2010.
McDonough's current radio program can be heard on WCBM AM680 radio in Baltimore on Saturday evenings from 8pm to 10pm.
He ran in the 2018 primary election as a Republican candidate for County Executive of Baltimore County. He lost the primary to Al Redmer,55%-44%. [5] During the campaign,he pledged "dramatic and powerful change" if elected,calling for more police and greater efforts to combat gangs and drugs. [6]
On April 18,2022,McDonough announced he would again run for County Executive of Baltimore County. [2]
David R. Craig is an American Republican Party politician from the State of Maryland who unsuccessfully sought the Republican nomination for Governor of Maryland in 2014. He was appointed, and sworn in as Harford County Executive on July 7, 2005. Craig was elected in 2006 and re-elected in 2010. Craig previously served in the Maryland State Senate in 1995–99 representing Harford County and in 1990-94 in the Maryland House of Delegates. He was also elected Mayor of Havre de Grace from 1985 to 1989 and 2001 to 2005. David was a teacher and assistant principal in the Harford County Public School System for thirty-four years.
Richard K. Impallaria is an American politician who served as a member of the Maryland House of Delegates, representing District 7 in Baltimore and Harford counties, from 2003 to 2023.
James Harkins is an American politician who served as Director of Maryland Environmental Services from 2005 until March 2016. He also is a former Harford County Executive and Delegate for District 35A. In December 2019, Maryland Governor Larry Hogan appointed Harkins to the University of Maryland Medical System board of directors.

Barry Glassman is an American politician who served as the 7th county executive of Harford County, Maryland, from 2014 to 2022. He was previously a member of the Maryland State Senate, representing District 35 in Harford County, Maryland; he was appointed in 2008 to fill a vacancy, and subsequently was re-elected to the position in 2010. Glassman was originally elected to the Maryland House of Delegates, District 35A in 1998, along with Joanne S. Parrott, defeating incumbent Michael G. Comeau and winning the seat left vacant by James M. Harkins, who was elected as Harford County Executive. He was the Republican nominee for Comptroller of Maryland in the 2022 election, which he lost to state delegate Brooke Lierman.
Mary-Dulany James is an American politician who has represented District 34 in the Maryland Senate since 2023. She was previously a member of the District 34A in the Maryland House of Delegates for sixteen years, representing Harford and Cecil Counties along the U.S. Route 40 corridor. Mary-Dulany James represented district 34A, formerly district 34, for 16 years having first been elected in 1998.

Alfred W. Redmer Jr. was a Maryland Insurance Commissioner and was the Republican nominee for County Executive of Baltimore County, Maryland in 2018. He formerly served as a legislator in the Maryland House of Delegates, representing District 8 in Baltimore County, prior to being appointed Maryland Insurance Commissioner in 2003.

Mary Ann Lisanti is an American politician and a member of the Democratic Party, who represented District 34A in the Maryland House of Delegates. Previously she represented district F on the Harford County Council, representing Havre de Grace, Abingdon, Belcamp/Riverside and Aberdeen Proving Ground. In January 2014 Lisanti filed to run for the Maryland House of Delegates and to not seek a 3rd term on the County Council. In early March 2019, the House of Delegates unanimously censured Lisanti for a racial slur directed at the African-American majority Prince George's County, with her own county's Democratic Party calling for her resignation.

On March 17, 2020, Governor Larry Hogan announced that the primary election would be postponed from April 28 to June 2 due to coronavirus concerns.
