Montana is a state in the Mountain West division of the Western United States. It is bordered by Idaho to the west, North Dakota and South Dakota to the east, Wyoming to the south, and the Canadian provinces of Alberta, British Columbia, and Saskatchewan to the north. It is the fourth-largest state by area, the eighth-least populous state, and the third-least densely populated state. Its state capital is Helena. The western half of Montana contains numerous mountain ranges, while the eastern half is characterized by western prairie terrain and badlands, with smaller mountain ranges found throughout the state. In all, 77 named ranges are part of the Rocky Mountains.
Michael Joseph Mansfield was an American politician and diplomat. A Democrat, he served as a U.S. representative (1943–1953) and a U.S. senator (1953–1977) from Montana. He was the longest-serving Senate Majority Leader and served from 1961 to 1977. During his tenure, he shepherded Great Society programs through the Senate.
Since Montana became a U.S. state in 1889, it has sent congressional delegations to the United States Senate and the United States House of Representatives. Each state elects two senators to serve for six years. Before the Seventeenth Amendment took effect in 1913, senators were elected by the Montana State Legislature. Members of the House of Representatives are elected to two-year terms, one from Montana's at-large congressional district. Before becoming a state, the Territory of Montana elected a non-voting delegate at-large to Congress from 1864 to 1889.
Sharps rifles are a series of large-bore, single-shot, falling-block, breech-loading rifles, beginning with a design by Christian Sharps in 1848 and ceasing production in 1881. They were renowned for long-range accuracy. By 1874 the rifle was available in a variety of calibers, and it was one of the few designs to be successfully adapted to metallic cartridge use. The Sharps rifles became icons of the American Old West with their appearances in many Western-genre films and books. Perhaps as a result, several rifle companies offer reproductions of the Sharps rifle.
Joseph Kemp Toole was a Democratic politician from Montana. He served as the first and fourth Governor of Montana.
Joseph Henry Sharp was an American painter and a founding member of the Taos Society of Artists, of which he is considered the "Spiritual Father". Sharp was one of the earliest European-American artists to visit Taos, New Mexico, which he saw in 1893 with artist John Hauser. He painted American Indian portraits and cultural life, as well as Western landscapes. President Theodore Roosevelt commissioned him to paint the portraits of 200 Native American warriors who survived the Battle of the Little Bighorn. While working on this project, Sharp lived on land of the Crow Agency, Montana, where he built Absarokee Hut in 1905. Boosted by his sale of 80 paintings to Phoebe Hearst, Sharp quit teaching and began to paint full-time.
William Walter "Bill" Mercer is an American attorney and politician serving as a member of the Montana House of Representatives from the 46th district. He previously served as the United States Attorney for the District of Montana, as well as principal associate deputy attorney general for the United States Department of Justice. Mercer was nominated by President George W. Bush as Associate Attorney General and served in the position in an acting capacity, but resigned before his confirmation hearing could take place.
Jonathan Windy Boy is an American politician, currently serving as a member of the Montana House of Representatives. From 2008 to 2016, he served in the Montana Senate. In 2019, he stepped down from legislative duties after being found guilty of sexual misconduct. The sexual misconduct stemmed from inappropriate texts he sent in 2017 to female colleagues between mid-August and October. Allegations and anecdotes began circulating of his history sexual misconduct on the reservation. He ran for re-election as Representative of District 32 and served in the 2021 session.
Frank J. Smith is an American politician, previously serving as a member of the Montana Senate, representing District 16. He served in the Montana Senate from 2004 until 2008 when he was succeeded by Jonathan Windy Boy. He was re-elected to the Montana Senate in 2016, and served from 2017-2020. In 2020, he was elected to the Montana House of Representatives, representing District 31.
Jim Keane is an American politician and a Democratic member of the Montana House of Representatives representing House District 73, which includes Butte, Montana. He has served in the Montana House since 2017, and previously served from 2001 to 2007. He is also former member of the Montana Senate and represented Senate District 38 from 2009 to 2015. He was a member of the Montana House of Representatives from 2000 to 2007.
Francis Grant "Frank" Higgins was an American football player, lawyer and politician. He played college football at the University of Michigan. He was the first native-born person from Montana to become a member of the state's bar and of the state's legislature. He served in the Montana House of Representatives and was elected as the mayor of Missoula, Montana in 1892. He was the fourth Lieutenant Governor of Montana from 1901 to 1905.
Gregory Richard Gianforte is an American businessman, politician, software engineer, and writer serving as the 25th governor of Montana since 2021. A member of the Republican Party, Gianforte served as the U.S. representative for Montana's at-large congressional district from 2017 to 2021.
Austin Knudsen is an American lawyer and politician serving as the Attorney General of Montana. He formerly served as the Speaker of the Montana House of Representatives from 2015 to 2019. During his time in the Montana House from 2010 to 2018, he represented House District 36, which includes the Culbertson area.
Matthew Martin Rosendale Sr. is an American politician and businessman in the state of Montana. A Republican, he is the U.S. representative for Montana's at-large congressional district in the U.S. House of Representatives, elected in 2020.

Frank Woodworth Hazelbaker was an American politician in the state of Montana who served in the Montana House of Representatives and Montana State Senate. He was Speaker pro tempore of the House in 1945 and the Speaker of the House in 1963. His father, Frank A. Hazelbaker was a Lieutenant Governor of Montana, and his maternal grandfather, George E. Woodworth served in the Montana House of Representatives.

Errol Wylie Galt is an American politician who serves as the Speaker of the Montana House of Representatives.
