Patricia Bailey is a former American politician who served in the Illinois House of Representatives from 2003 to 2005.

Early life and education

Born in Chicago, Illinois, Bailey received her bachelor's degree in social work from the University of Chicago and did graduate work at National Louis University. [1] [2]

Career

Prior to entering politics, Bailey was a probation officer. In 2002, Bailey was elected to the Illinois House of Representatives as a Democrat. Bailey received an unsuccessful primary challenge in 2004 from former death row inmate Aaron Patterson. [3] According to the Chicago Tribune , Bailey's 2004 campaign was "heavily financed by Chicago-area law-enforcement groups". [4]

Residency controversy

In 2005, Bailey was found to be living somewhere other than in the 6th District she claimed. She was found guilty of voter fraud and perjury and was forced to resign from the Illinois General Assembly. [5] [6] [7] Bailey was succeeded in her position by fellow Democrat Esther Golar. [8]

In 2013, she received two years probation for listing a fake address on candidate and voter registration documents. [9]

Ronald Dale Earle was an American politician and judge who was, from January 1977 to January 2009, the District Attorney for Travis County, Texas. In Texas, Earle was known for his criminal justice reform efforts which focused on crime prevention, alternative sentencing, victim advocacy, and the reintegration of former offenders into society. Esther P. Golar was a Democratic member of the Illinois House of Representatives, representing the 6th District since her appointment in 2006. She served until her death on September 21, 2015.

A number of controversies related to Rod Blagojevich, formerly the Governor of Illinois, were covered in the press during and after his administration. In addition to a reputation for secrecy that was noted by the Associated Press, Blagojevich was the subject of political, legal, and personal controversies similar to those of his predecessor, Republican Governor George Ryan. To the surprise of many, Blagojevich said in 2008 that he agreed with the idea of commuting Ryan's federal prison sentence.

Corruption in Illinois has been a problem from the earliest history of the state. Electoral fraud in Illinois pre-dates the territory's admission to the Union in 1818. Illinois had the third most federal criminal convictions for public corruption between 1976 and 2012, behind New York and California. A study published by the University of Illinois Chicago in 2022 ranked Illinois as the second most corrupt state in the nation, with 4 out of the last 11 governors serving time in prison.
