Patrick Carignan (born October 11, 1974) is a Canadian former professional ice hockey left winger.
Ice hockey is a contact team sport played on ice, usually in a rink, in which two teams of skaters use their sticks to shoot a vulcanized rubber puck into their opponent's net to score points. The sport is known to be fast-paced and physical, with teams usually consisting of six players each: one goaltender, and five players who skate up and down the ice trying to take the puck and score a goal against the opposing team.
Winger, in the game of ice hockey, is a forward position of a player whose primary zone of play on the ice is along the outer playing area. They typically work by flanking the centre forward. Originally the name was given to forward players who went up and down the sides of the rink. Nowadays, there are different types of wingers in the game — out-and-out goal scorers, checkers who disrupt the opponents, and forwards who work along the boards and in the corners. They tend to be bigger than centreman and smaller than defenseman.

Carignan played junior hockey in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League for the Saint-Jean Lynx and Shawinigan Cataractes from 1991 to 1995. In the 1994–95, Carignan won the Jean Béliveau Trophy after scoring 137 points, including 100 assists, in 71 games. [1] He was also named in the QMJHL's First All-Star Team and the CHL Third All-Star Team.
The Quebec Major Junior Hockey League is one of the three major junior ice hockey leagues which constitute the Canadian Hockey League. The league includes teams in the provinces of Quebec, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island. The current president of the QMJHL is Gilles Courteau.
Saint-Jean Lynx were a junior ice hockey team which played from 1989 to 1995 in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League. They played at the Colisée Isabelle-Brasseur. In 1982 they moved from Sherbrooke and were formerly the Sherbrooke Castors. They were known as the Saint-Jean Castors from 1982 until 1989. In 1995 they moved to Rimouski to become the Rimouski Océanic.
The Shawinigan Cataractes are a junior ice hockey team in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League. The team is based out of Shawinigan, Quebec, Canada. The Cataractes have been previously known as the Shawinigan Bruins until 1973, and were called the Shawinigan Dynamos from 1973 to 1978.
Carignan went on to play professionally in Europe, playing in Germany for Heilbronner EC of the 2nd Bundesliga and in France for Anglet Hormadi Élite and Diables Rouges de Briançon of the FFHG Division 1 and Boxers de Bordeaux of the Élite Ligue.
The 2nd Eishockey-Bundesliga was the second tier of Ice hockey in Germany until 2012/13 and has since been replaced by DEL2. Starting in 2002, the league was organized by the ESBG, to which the league organization was outsourced from the DEB, the German ice hockey federation. In the 2012–13 season, it featured 13 teams.
