Paul Brannigan (born 14 September 1986 [2] [3] ) is a Scottish actor best known for his roles as Gareth O'Connor in Scottish soap opera River City and as Robbie in the film The Angels' Share (2012). Brannigan also appeared in the 2013 movie Under the Skin .

Early life

Brannigan was born in Glasgow, Scotland. He was brought up in the rough working-class East End Barrowfield area of Glasgow. Both of his parents were long-term drug addicts and much of his youth was spent amidst gang violence and petty crime. [4] He was a gang member in Glasgow and served time in a young offenders institution. [5]

Career

Brannigan began his film career as Robbie in the 2012 Ken Loach dark comedy film, The Angels' Share , which is set largely in Glasgow and the Scottish Highlands. He was nominated for a BAFTA Scotland award for Best Actor for this role. Brannigan was originally cast in a one-off appearance in the BBC Scotland soap opera River City , but in spring 2013 returned for a recurring role as Gareth O'Connor. He left the programme in September 2013. [6]

Brannigan had parts in the movies Under the Skin and Sunshine on Leith , and in 2014 appeared as Scotty in the fifth series of Irish crime drama Love/Hate and as Michael in the UK thriller Beyond. [7]

Personal life

Brannigan has one son. [5] [8] His cousin Kevin Brannigan, who also grew up in Barrowfield, is a drag artist. [9]

Brannigan was arrested by officers from Police Scotland on New Year's Day 2020 following an assault on David Brannigan, thought to be Paul's brother. He appeared at Glasgow Sheriff Court where he was charged with assault to severe injury and permanent disfigurement. At court he made no plea and was released on bail pending a further hearing. [10]

Since 2019, the show has aired episodes a day earlier on the new BBC Scotland channel. Tony Gordon is a fictional character from the British ITV soap opera Coronation Street, portrayed by actor Gray O'Brien. The character first appeared on-screen on 16 September 2007. He appeared as a regular character for two years before departing on 11 December 2009 after being imprisoned for the murder of Liam Connor. He returned on 28 May 2010 after managing to break out of prison with the help of his cellmate Robbie Sloan, whom Tony later betrayed by shooting him dead. The Angels' Share is a 2012 comedy-drama film directed by Ken Loach and starring Paul Brannigan, John Henshaw, and William Ruane. Set in Glasgow, Scotland, it tells the story of a young father who narrowly avoids a prison sentence. He is determined to turn over a new leaf and when he and his friends from the same community payback group visit a whisky distillery, a route to a new life becomes apparent. The title is from "the angels' share", a term for the portion (share) of a whisky's volume that is lost to evaporation during aging in oak barrels.

Robbie Roscoe is a fictional character from the British Channel 4 soap opera Hollyoaks, played by Charlie Wernham. He made his first screen appearance on 2 April 2013. Robbie is part of the Roscoe family and the first member to be introduced. On 19 March 2013, a Channel 4 press release revealed that Robbie "leads the way for a family of boys to descend on Hollyoaks, headed by Gillian Taylforth as mother, Sandy." Sunshine on Leith is a 2013 British romantic musical film directed by Dexter Fletcher. It is an adaptation of the stage musical of the same name, a jukebox musical featuring songs by The Proclaimers. It was screened in the Special Presentation section at the 2013 Toronto International Film Festival.

Gary Lamont is a Scottish actor, best known for his role as hairdresser Robbie Fraser in the soap opera River City, a role which he played from 2009 to 2017.

Kevin Guthrie is a Scottish former actor. William Ruane is a Scottish actor. He is best known for his roles in the films Sweet Sixteen (2002) and The Angels' Share (2012), and in the soap opera River City.

Elaine Mackenzie Ellis is a Scottish television actress and singer, best known for her roles as Tina The Taxi Lady in Me Too! on CBeebies, Natalie Nesbitt in Rab C Nesbitt and 'Nurse Elaine' in Scottish comedy Still Game.
