The Sydney Swans is a professional Australian rules football club which plays in the Australian Football League (AFL), having been a founding member of the competition since 1897. The club was originally established in 1874 as the South Melbourne Football Club, and played amongst other clubs based in Melbourne, Victoria. In 1982 the club relocated to Sydney, New South Wales, changing its name in the process and becoming the first club in the competition to be based outside the state of Victoria.

Joe Daniher is an Australian rules footballer with the Brisbane Lions in the Australian Football League (AFL). He previously played for the Essendon Football Club from 2013 to 2020, having been recruited to the club under the father–son rule. Daniher won a Crichton Medal and All-Australian selection in 2017, as well as the 2017 AFL Mark of the Year and Anzac Medal for that season. He is also a four-time Essendon leading goalkicker.

The 2016 Australian Football League season was the 120th season of the elite Australian rules football competition and the 27th under the name 'Australian Football League', having switched from 'Victorian Football League' after 1989. There were 18 teams competing in the league, the same as the previous four seasons. The first game was played on Thursday, 24 March, and the 2016 AFL Grand Final was played on Saturday, 1 October with the Western Bulldogs defeating Sydney by 22 points to win its second premiership and first in 62 years, breaking the then-longest active drought in VFL/AFL history.

Paul Ahern is a former professional Australian rules footballer who played for the Greater Western Sydney Giants and the North Melbourne Football Club in the Australian Football League (AFL). He was originally drafted by the Greater Western Sydney Giants with their third selection and seventh overall in the 2014 national draft. After failing to play a senior match in his two seasons with the Giants due to a number of injuries including two knee reconstructions, he was traded to North Melbourne during the 2016 trade period. He made his debut in the fifty-four point win against Brisbane in round eleven of the 2018 season, one year after being traded to North Melbourne. Ahern was delisted by North Melbourne at the end of the 2020 AFL season after a mass delisting by North Melbourne which saw 11 players cut from the team's list.
