Simon Eishold (born 26 March 1967) is a former Australian rules footballer who played with Melbourne and Richmond in the Victorian/Australian Football League (VFL/AFL).
Australian rules football, officially known as Australian football, or simply called Aussie rules, football or footy, is a contact sport played between two teams of eighteen players on an oval-shaped field, often a modified cricket ground. Points are scored by kicking the oval-shaped ball between goal posts or between behind posts.
The Melbourne Football Club, nicknamed the Demons, is a professional Australian rules football club, playing in the Australian Football League (AFL). It is named after and based in the city of Melbourne, Victoria, and plays its home games at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG).
The Richmond Football Club, nicknamed the Tigers, is a professional Australian rules football club playing in the Australian Football League (AFL), the sport's premier competition. Between its inception in Richmond, Melbourne in 1885 and 1907, the club competed in the Victorian Football Association (VFA), winning two premierships. Richmond joined the Victorian Football League in 1908 and has since won eleven premierships, most recently in 2017.
Eishold, a centreman, came from Ormond Amateurs [1] and is perhaps best remembered for a missed shot at goal late in the last quarter of the 1987 Preliminary Final after marking in the goal square against Hawthorn's Peter Schwab. A goal would likely have booked Melbourne's spot in the Grand Final and Eishold, who came in from an angle, pull his kick wide. Hawthorn would go on to win the match with a goal after the siren, following Jim Stynes giving away a 15-metre penalty.
Ormond Amateur Football Club is the second-oldest suburban club in the Victorian Amateur Football Association. The club was founded in 1931 by Mr. Leslie Edward Smith, and is located 14 km south east of Melbourne in the suburb of Ormond. In 2008 Ormond welcomed back recently retired AFL player Matthew Robbins as player and assistant coach. After competing in B grade in season 2009, Ormond were narrowly relegated and subsequently moved down to C grade for 2010.
The 1987 Victorian Football League season was the 91st season of the elite Australian rules football competition. Two new clubs joined the competition in 1987, West Coast Eagles and the Brisbane Bears.
Peter Schwab is the Umpiring Director for the AFL and former List Manager at AFL football club, Brisbane Lions. He is a former Australian rules footballer and coach in the VFL/AFL and has held many roles in VFL/AFL football.
Melbourne made the Grand Final the following season, but Eishold didn't take part after making only seven appearances all year. He had his best season in 1990, with 16.40 disposals on average a game and 22 goals. [2]
He was set to move to Tasmania in 1993 to take up the position of Hobart's senior coach, but when that failed to eventuate he was picked up by Richmond with the 51st pick of the 1993 Pre-Season Draft. Back under his old Melbourne coach, John Northey, Eishold could only manage to add a further four games to his AFL tally.
Hobart Football Club is an Australian rules football club based in Hobart, Tasmania. They play their home fixtures at the TCA Ground on the Queens Domain, in Hobart and from 2014, the club has been a member of the Southern Football League after voting to withdraw from the Tasmanian State League at the end of the 2013 season after five seasons in that competition.
John "Swooper" Northey is a former Australian rules football player and coach. He played from 1963 to 1970 with the Richmond Football Club. Northey was a dual premiership player with Richmond, winning flags in 1967 and 1969. He is better known, however, as a coach.
Eishold then played with and coached Echuca in the Goulburn Valley Football League. He won a Morrison Medal in 1995 as the league's best player and was the coach of the 1997 Echuca premiership team. [3] After his football career ended, Eishold remained in Echuca as a property valuer.
