Air Marshal Paul Alexander Godfrey, CB , OBE is a senior Royal Air Force officer, who served as the first commander of the United Kingdom Space Command. [1]
Godfrey grew up in RAF Kenley, south of London. He was educated at Trinity School of John Whitgift, then an all-boys private school in the London Borough of Croydon. While at school, he was a member of the Combined Cadet Force, and gained his private pilot licence at 17. [2]
Godfrey was commissioned into the Royal Air Force on 9 May 1991. [3] He served as a Harrier jump jet pilot. [4] In 2006, while holding the rank of squadron leader, he was awarded the Air Medal by the president of the United States "in recognition of gallant and distinguished services during coalition operations in Iraq". [5] He became station commander at RAF Lossiemouth in November 2015. [6]
In February 2021, it was announced that he would become the first Commander, United Kingdom Space Command. [1] He took up the post on 8 March 2021 and was promoted to the rank of air vice-marshal. [7] In December 2023, it was announced that he would take up the post of Director Capability at Strategic Command in June 2024. [8] However, in June 2024, he instead took up the appointment of assistant chief of space operations for future concepts and partnerships with the United States Space Force and based at The Pentagon. [9] [10] He was promoted to air marshal on 15 June 2024. [11]
Godfrey was appointed Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in the 2014 Birthday Honours. [12] He was appointed a Companion of the Order of the Bath (CB) in the 2025 New Year Honours. [13]

The Deputy Chief of the Air Staff (DCAS) is a senior appointment in the Royal Air Force. The incumbent is the deputy to the Chief of the Air Staff. The post existed from 1918 to 1969, and from 2023 to present. She served as Director of Combat Air at Defence Equipment and Support in the Ministry of Defence (2014–16), as Air Officer Commanding No. 38 Group (2016–18), and as Director-General of the Defence Safety Authority (2019–22). She is the most senior female officer ever to serve in the Royal Air Force.
Air Marshal Sir Stuart David Atha,, is a former senior officer of the Royal Air Force. He led No. 3 (Fighter) Squadron from 2000 to 2004, which included deployment to Iraq on Operation Telic, commanded RAF Coningsby (2006–08), No. 83 Expeditionary Air Group (2009–10) and No. 1 Group (2011–14), and served as the Air Component Commander for security during the 2012 London Olympics. Atha was RAF Deputy Commander Operations from 2016 to 2019.
