Paul Ireland (born 1970) is a Scottish actor from Ardrossan, North Ayrshire, Scotland. [1] He is best known for his role as Superintendent Duncan Hayes in Neighbours .

Career

Ireland originally started off as a fishmonger in his father's shop in Greenock, Renfrewshire for five years before deciding to learn acting. [1] In 1995, Ireland acted in the West End of London at the Ambassadors Theatre in a theatrical adaptation of the novel Trainspotting . [2] During its run, the show won the Sunday Times Best New Play award. [3]

During his career, Ireland has acted in numerous British television programmes such as Judge John Deed , Two Thousand Acres of Sky, The Bill [1] and Midsomer Murders . [4] In April 2011, he gained a role in Australian soap opera, Neighbours [5] as Superintendent Duncan Hayes. Ireland was initially cast to play the role for thirteen episodes. Ireland made his debut in Neighbours in Episode 6183. In 2012, he also acted in Australian Broadcasting Corporation comedy, Outland after auditioning and meeting the writers, who told him that they wanted a British actor in the role in the programme. [6] In 2013, Ireland made a return appearance on Neighbours as Duncan Hayes. [7]

In 2006, Ireland appeared in the BBC History online interactive game CDX as MacKinnon, a Mithraist soldier. [8]

In 2016, he co-produced and directed the Australian drama film Pawno .

Since 2018, Ireland appeared in the Australian AFL drama Playing for Keeps as Andrew Macleish, president of the Southern Jets football club. [9]

Personal life

Ireland is married to casting director Thea McLeod, with whom he has one son, actor Finn Ireland. [10] [11] He also has a daughter, Georgia Blue Ireland from his first marriage. [1] After leaving Scotland, he moved to London for thirteen years before leaving the United Kingdom for Australia in 2009, where he currently resides. [12]

<i>Neighbours</i> Australian soap opera (1985–present)

Neighbours is an Australian television soap opera, which has aired since 18 March 1985. It was created by television executive Reg Watson. The Seven Network commissioned the show following the success of Watson's earlier soap Sons and Daughters. Although successful in Melbourne, Neighbours underperformed in the Sydney market and was cancelled by Seven four months after it began airing. It was immediately commissioned by rival Network Ten for a second production season, which began screening on 20 January 1986. Neighbours became the longest-running drama series in Australian television history. In 2005, it was inducted into the Logie Hall of Fame.

Scott Ian Major is an Australian actor and TV and film director, known for his roles as Peter Rivers in the 1994 television teen drama series Heartbreak High and Lucas Fitzgerald in soap opera Neighbours. After leaving Neighbours in 2013, Major returned to direct over 200 episodes of the serial. He has since gone on to direct episodes of Playing for Keeps, and two miniseries Lie With Me and Riptide. Major reprised his role as Rivers in the 2022 reboot of Heartbreak High.

"Episode 6188" is the 6188th episode of the Australian soap opera Neighbours. It premiered on Eleven on 22 June 2011. The episode was written by Sarah Mayberry, directed by Jonathon Dutton, and executively produced by Susan Bower. Episode 6188 revolves around Mark Brennan's departure from the soap. The storyline sees Mark tell his girlfriend, Kate Ramsay, that he is going into witness protection. He reveals that she has just 30 minutes to decide whether to stay behind in Erinsborough or leave with him. However, when she makes the choice to leave, she has trouble convincing her younger sister to come too.

Shetland is a Scottish crime drama television series produced by ITV Studios for BBC Scotland. First broadcast on BBC One on 10 March 2013, it is originally based upon the novels of Ann Cleeves and adapted by David Kane. The first seven series starred Douglas Henshall as DI Jimmy Pérez, whilst Ashley Jensen stars as DI Ruth Calder from the eighth series. The cast also includes Alison O'Donnell as DS Alison "Tosh" McIntosh and Steven Robertson as DC Sandy Wilson, as well as Lewis Howden and Anne Kidd. Still then appeared in the series Outlander and Fried before playing Scott Fairchild on in the drama Waterloo Road in 2015. Still made his stage debut in National Theatre of Scotland's The James Plays trilogy (2016). In 2018, he took over the role of "Sick Boy" in Trainspotting Live. After appearing as Brian in the 2021 film Nobody Has to Know, Still played Rory Dashford in the series Granite Harbour in 2022. That December, he began appearing as the villain Justin Rutherford in a recurring guest role on the soap opera Coronation Street, last appearing in October 2023. Still has also acted in various theatre productions and workshops in addition to the short film Dark Roads. Still was nominated for "Best newcomer" at the 2012 TV Choice Awards for his Hollyoaks role as Joel and was longlisted for "Best Villain" at the 2023 Inside Soap Awards for his Coronation Street role as Justin, whilst Justin's storylines won and were nominated for several other awards.
