Paul Jasmin

Paul Jasmin (born April 1935) is an American artist based in Los Angeles, California. Jasmin was an illustrator, a painter, and an actor before finding photography. His commercial work has appeared in Vogue , Teen Vogue , GQ , Details , V Magazine , V Man, Vogue Hommes, W Magazine , and Interview . Jasmin has illustrated and photographed fashion campaigns for luxury brands, including Valentino, A.P.C, and he sits on the faculty of Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California.

Early career

In 1954 Jasmin left his hometown of Helena, Montana to travel and pursue acting in Paris, Egypt, New York, Morocco and Los Angeles. [1] He appears as an actor in Riot in Juvenile Prison (1959), Midnight Cowboy (1969) and, later, Adaptation (2002). [2] Together with actresses Virginia Gregg and Jeanette Nolan, Paul Jasmin provided the voice for Norman's mother in Alfred Hitchcock's classic Psycho (1960). The three voices were thoroughly mixed except for the last speech, which is all Gregg's.

After Jasmin's brief career as an actor the artist pursued painting and illustration. [3] From 1965–1975, Jasmin illustrated fashion campaigns for the luxury brand, Valentino. [4] He also illustrated the poster for the 1972 film Bijou , directed by Wakefield Poole. [5]

Photography

At the urging of friend and photographer Bruce Weber, Jasmin began photographing for commercial clients in the late 1970s. Jasmin has realized campaigns for brands including, A.P.C., SAKS, Nautica and Mr. Porter. Jasmin currently teaches photography at the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California. [7]

Jürgen Vollmer, with Astrid Kirchherr and Klaus Voormann, befriended the Beatles during the band's time in Hamburg in the early 1960s. The son of a professional army officer who died during World War II, Vollmer was attending Hamburg's Institute of Fashion at the time he met the Beatles, who at the time included drummer Pete Best and bassist Stu Sutcliffe. Vollmer quickly became one of the group's photographers, and was responsible for some of their most iconic images in their leather-clad days prior to Brian Epstein. John Lennon was particularly impressed with Vollmer's photos, and used one of his favourites on the cover of his 1975 album Rock 'n' Roll. During the time Vollmer lived in the US, he worked as a set photographer in several Hollywood film productions. In April 1961, a few months before he moved from his hometown of Hamburg to Paris, Vollmer photographed the then unknown Beatles as a student of photography. John Lennon used one of these photos in 1975 as the cover of his solo album Rock 'n' Roll and wrote in the same year in his foreword to Vollmer's photo book Rock 'n' Roll Times: "Jürgen Vollmer was the first photographer to capture the beauty and spirit of the Beatles. We tried very hard to find someone with his touch [...] nobody could."

George Holz was born in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, graduated from the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California, and assisted for Helmut Newton, whom he credits with guiding his career. As a fledgling photographer, he lived in Milan and Paris, where he shot beauty and fashion for major European magazines such as Italian Vogue and French Elle. Afterward, he moved to New York City, where he set up his famous studio on Lafayette Street, traveling frequently to Los Angeles and Europe to shoot fashion, advertising, and portraiture for major publications such as Vanity Fair and Harper's Bazaar. His fine-art nudes have been exhibited in galleries and museums around the world.
