Paul Joseph TenHaken,(born November 13,1977) is an American businessman and website developer who has served as the mayor of Sioux Falls,South Dakota since May 15,2018. [1]
TenHaken was born in Sioux Center,Iowa,to parents Lyle and Beth TenHaken. [2] He was raised in Worthington,Minnesota. [3] TenHaken attended Dordt College and received his degree in graphic design in 2000. [4] Upon graduation,TenHaken moved to Sioux Falls,South Dakota,and worked as the mascot of the Sioux Falls Skyforce. [5] He attended the University of Sioux Falls and received an MBA in 2004. [4]
TenHaken founded Click Rain,a marketing technology agency in Sioux Falls,in 2008. TenHaken was named one of Entrepreneur magazine's Top 10 Emerging Entrepreneurs as well as South Dakota Young Entrepreneur of the Year. TenHaken is also the co-founder of the Dispatch Project,a non-profit that organizes overseas mission opportunities for business leaders. His efforts have received accolades from Entrepreneur Magazine,When Work Works,Inc. Magazine,and Sioux Falls Business Journal. [6]
TenHaken placed first in the April 10,2018 election,and won the May 1 run-off election with 62.7% of the vote. [7]
On April 9,2020,over 80 employees at a Smithfield Foods pork processing plant in Sioux Falls were confirmed to have tested positive for COVID-19. The plant announced it would suspend operations beginning April 11. [8] On April 14,2020,TenHaken stated he would be proposing a stay at home order to the city council. [9] After three days and tremendous backlash,he decided not to pursue the stay at home order. Mayor TenHaken is credited as saying it is difficult to lead locally in a non-partisan way. He has also said a mask mandate could 'destroy a city' due to how politicized the issue had become. [10]
In April 2022,Mayor TenHaken was re-elected to serve a second term as mayor by securing 73% of the vote,a record for any mayoral race in the City of Sioux Falls since transitioning to its current form of government.
One of Mayor TenHakens goals in office was to make Sioux Falls the Fittest city in the country. [11] He has implemented several programs to improve the city's health including a citywide running program, [12] outdoor fitness courts [13] and soccer pitches. [14]

The Big Sioux River is a tributary of the Missouri River in eastern South Dakota and northwestern Iowa in the United States. It flows generally southwardly for 419 mi (674 km),and its watershed is 9,006 sq mi (23,330 km2). The United States Board on Geographic Names settled on "Big Sioux River" as the stream's name in 1931. The river was named after the Lakota people which was known by them as Tehankasandata,or Thick Wooded River.
The Sioux Falls Stampede are a Tier I junior ice hockey team based in Sioux Falls,South Dakota. The Stampede are members of the Western Conference of the United States Hockey League (USHL). The team plays home games at the Denny Sanford Premier Center,the largest facility in capacity and size in the USHL. The team was established in 1999 and is owned by Sioux Falls Sports LLC.
The Sioux Area Metro (SAM) is the local governmental transit agency in Sioux Falls,South Dakota,and the state's largest public transportation operator. They provide multiple scheduled fixed routes and paratransit services. Although the city owns the bus fleet the system is currently managed by First Transit and operated under Sioux Area Metro. In 2023,the system had a ridership of 559,400,or about 1,800 per weekday as of the fourth quarter of 2023.
The Augustana Vikings are the athletic teams that represent Augustana University,located in Sioux Falls,South Dakota,in NCAA Division II intercollegiate sports. The Vikings compete as members of the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference for all 14 varsity sports. The Vikings joined the NSIC from the North Central Conference,which folded in 2008.
The Great Plains Zoo is a 45-acre (18 ha) zoo located in Sioux Falls,South Dakota,United States. The zoo formerly was connected with the Delbridge Museum of Natural History,and prior to the closure of the museum,the museum displayed 150 mounted animals,including 38 "vanishing species". The Great Plains Zoo is owned and operated through a partnership between the City of Sioux Falls and the Zoological Society.

The 1900 South Dakota gubernatorial election was held on November 6,1900. Incumbent Governor Andrew E. Lee,a Populist elected under Fusion with Populists,Free Silver Republicans,and Democrats,opted to run for Congress rather than for a third term. Former Sioux Falls Mayor Burre H. Lien won the Fusion nomination and ran against former Lieutenant Governor Charles N. Herreid. However,despite the closeness of the 1896 and 1898 elections,the Fusion's luck ran out;Herreid defeated Lien in a landslide to reclaim the office for the Republican Party.
Sheldon High School is a rural public high school in Sheldon,Iowa,serving students of the Sheldon Community School District in grades 9-12. The flag of Sioux Falls,South Dakota,consists of a zigzag pattern of thin white and blue lines,which divides an upper blue portion and a lower pinkish-red portion,and a yellow sun in the upper left corner. The zigzag represents the namesake falls of the Big Sioux River. The blue color and the sun allude to the flag of South Dakota. The pinkish-red portion represents the Sioux Quartzite nearby. The upward direction of the design represents the growth of Sioux Falls. The red,white and blue colors included in the flag are also a reference to the flag of the United States while maintaining city and state pride.

The COVID-19 pandemic in South Dakota is an ongoing viral pandemic of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19),a novel infectious disease caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). The state of South Dakota reported its first four cases and one death from COVID-19 on March 10,2020. On June 15,2021,South Dakota public health authorities reported 25 new cases of COVID-19,bringing the state's cumulative total to 124,377 cases. The state's COVID-19 death toll is 2,026,with no new deaths reported over the previous 24 hours. The state ranks 9th in deaths per capita among U.S. states,and 3rd in cases per-capita,behind only North Dakota and Rhode Island.
The meat industry has been severely affected by the COVID-19 pandemic in the United States. Outbreaks of the virus took place in factories operated by the meat packing industry and the poultry processing industry. These outbreaks affected dozens of plants,leading to closures of some factories and disruption of others,and posed a significant threat to the meat supply in the United States. The damage the COVID-19 pandemic brought to the meatpacking industry was unexpected and resulted in a sharp reduction of meat processing and capacity reduction of meatpacking companies.
The 2022 South Dakota gubernatorial election took place on November 8,2022,electing the governor of South Dakota. Incumbent Republican governor Kristi Noem defeated Democratic nominee Jamie Smith to win a second term.
