Paul Valentino Phiri is a Malawian military officer who was appointed as the Commander of the Malawi Defence Force (MDF) in July 2023 by President Lazarus Chakwera. He became the first officer from the Army's Infantry Corps to lead the MDF. [1] [2]
Phiri was born on 24 August in 1972 in Blantyre,Malawi. [3] He has served in the Malawi Defence Force for many years,holding various positions before becoming the Deputy Commander.
He was appointed as the Commander of the MDF in July 2023,replacing General Vincent Nundwe who served as the Commander of the Malawi Defence Force (MDF) from 2019 to 2023,appointed by former President Peter Mutharika. He retired from the military in July 2023. [4] [5]

Phiri has been under investigation by the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) of Malawi since June 2023 for his involvement in a financial misconduct case. He is accused of misusing K38.5 millions of taxpayers’money and coercing an accountant to authorize the payment. [10]

General Henry Odillo was Commander of the Malawian Defence Force. He was appointed as the commander General of Malawi defence force in July 2011 after the nationwide protests against Bingu wa Mutharika's presidency in which wa Mutharika accused the organizers of the protest of plotting a coup against him. He replaced General Marko Chiziko. Prior to this appointment he served as the military attache at the Malawi High Commission in London. General Odillo was dismissed by Malawi's new President Arthur Mutharika in June 2014. President Mutharika promoted Major-General Ignacio Maulana to the rank of General and appointed him the new Commander of the Army.

He also serves as minister of defence per Malawian constitution,he has served as the leader of the Malawi Congress Party since 2013. On 10 June 2024,a Malawian Defence Force Dornier 228 carrying the Vice-President of Malawi,Saulos Chilima,and eight other occupants,crashed in Chikangawa Forest Reserve in Mzimba District,killing all 9 people on board.
