Pauline Konga (born 10 April 1970) is a retired Kenyan long-distance runner. At the 1996 Summer Olympics she won the silver medal in the 5,000 metres, making her the first Kenyan woman to win an Olympic medal. [1]
In 1990, Konga finished a dismal 125th at the 1990 World Cross Country Championships. She improved to 15th at the 1991 World Cross Country Championships, and finished twelfth in 3,000 metros at the 1991 World Championships. [2] She also became the Kenyan champion in cross-country running (long course). [3] In 1992 she finished a lowly 90th at the 1992 World Cross Country Championships, but improved to seventh at the 1993 World Cross Country Championships, also winning the gold in the team competition.[ citation needed ]
Konga participated in her first Olympics in 1992, failing to progress from the heats in the 3000 metres. [4] In 1996 she became Kenyan 5000 metres champion [3] and finished third at the 1996 Grand Prix Final. [5] At the 1996 Olympic Games she won the silver medal in the 5000 metres, becoming the first Kenyan woman to win an Olympic medal.
Her personal bests were 8:37.76 minutes in the 3000 metres, achieved in August 1996 in Monaco; [6] 14:47.51 minutes in the 5000 metres, achieved in August 1996 in Köln; and 1:09:33 hours in the half marathon, achieved in January 1996 in Marrakech. [2]
She was born in Baringo District. [4] She is married to Paul Bitok, who won a silver medal in the men's 5000 metres at the 1992 and 1996 Olympics. [1]
Sonia O'Sullivan is an Irish former track and field athlete. She won a gold medal in the 5000 metres at the 1995 World Championships, and a silver medal in the 5000 metres at the 2000 Olympic Games. Her 2000 m world record of 5:25.36, set in 1994 stood until 2017.
Nikolina Pavlova Shtereva is a retired Bulgarian middle-distance runner who specialised in the 800 and 1500 metres. She is best known for her silver medal in 800 metres at the 1976 Summer Olympics, and at the European Indoor Championships she won gold medals in 1976 and 1979 and a bronze medal in 1981. She won fourteen national titles in Bulgaria, and is still the Bulgarian record holder in the 800 metres.
Tatyana Petrova Arkhipova is a Russian runner. She is a former specialist in the 3000 metres steeplechase, and won a bronze medal at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. She later moved up to marathon and won the Olympic bronze medal in that event at the 2012 London Games.
Silvia Sommaggio is a retired Italian long-distance runner who specializes in the 5000 and 10,000 metres as well as cross-country and road running.
Vivian Jepkemoi Cheruiyot is a Kenyan long-distance runner. She represented Kenya at the Summer Olympics in 2000, 2008, 2012, and 2016, winning the silver medal in the 5,000 metres and bronze in the 10,000 metres at the 2012 London Olympics as well as gold in the 5,000 m and silver in the 10,000 m at the 2016 Rio Olympics, setting a new Olympic record in the former. Cheruiyot won the silver medal in the 5,000 m at the 2007 World Championships in Athletics and became the world champion in the event at the 2009 edition, repeating this achievement in 2011, when she also won the 10,000 m. She added gold for the latter event at the 2015 World Championships in Athletics. After taking a silver in the 3,000 metres at the 2010 World Indoor Championships, Cheruiyot won a number of outdoor 5,000 m titles that year, becoming Commonwealth Games, African and Continental Cup champion, as well as winning the Diamond League title.

Anikó Kálovics is a Hungarian runner who specializes in the 10,000 metres and the marathon. She is a four-time Olympian (2000–2012) and has won both the Venice Marathon and Italian Marathon.
Katalin Szentgyörgyi is a retired Hungarian long-distance runner who specialized in the 5000 metres.
Luchia Yishak is a former Ethiopian long-distance runner. She ran for Ethiopia at the Summer Olympics in 1992 and 1996.
Pauline Chemning Korikwiang is a Kenyan professional long-distance runner who competes in track and cross country running competitions.
Annette Sergent is a French former long-distance runner. She represented her country three times at the Summer Olympics, but it was in cross country running that she had her greatest success. She became the first Frenchwoman to win a world title in the sport at the 1987 IAAF World Cross Country Championships and won for a second time in 1989. In addition to these victories, she made eleven appearances at the competition and placed third in both 1986 and 1988.

Margaret Ngotho is a Kenyan former long-distance runner who competed in cross-country running and track events. Her highest achievement was a bronze medal in the short race at the IAAF World Cross Country Championships in 2000. She was three times a team medalist at the competition for Kenya, winning gold in 1991 and 1995 then finally silver in 2001.
Simon Chemoiywo is a Kenyan former long-distance runner. He competed in track, cross country and road running. At the IAAF World Cross Country Championships he twice represented Kenya: in 1994 he was the runner-up and team champion, then helped retain the team title for Kenya at the 1995 race.
Irene Chepet Cheptai is a Kenyan professional long-distance runner who competes in track and cross country running. She was the gold medallist at the 2017 World Cross Country Championships and led Kenya to the team title. Cheptai won the silver medal for the 10,000 metres at the 2022 Commonwealth Games.
Mustapha Bamouh is a retired Moroccan runner who specialized in the 10,000 metres.
