Paulo Soares (born 1 December 1999) is a professional footballer who plays as a midfielder for Bulgarian Second Professional Football League club Sportist Svoge. [1] Born in the United States, he is a Cape Verde international. [2]
Born in the United States, Soares returned to Cape Verde as a child with his family, before returning again to the United States, where he captained the soccer team at Quincy High School in Quincy, Massachusetts. [3] [4] In Cape Verde, Soares had been scouted by Italian and Portuguese teams but his family prioritized his education, thus the decision to send him back to the United States instead. [5]
Soares played college soccer for the Quinnipiac Bobcats and made the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) All-Rookie team. [6] During the 2021 season, he made the All-MAAC team and the MAAC All-Academic team. [7] He also captained the Quinnipiac Bobcats. [8]
Before the 2022 season, Soares signed for American side Rochester New York FC. [9]
On 13 January 2024, Soares joined Bulgarian second division club Dobrudzha. [10]
Soares played for the Cape Verde national under-15, under-16, and under-19 teams, and has captained the national under-19 team. [11] He debuted for Cape Verde during a 1–0 loss to Ecuador. [12]
Soares can operate as a center midfielder and a defensive midfielder and is known for his work ethic. [13]

They finished the season 12–21 overall, 7–11 in MAAC play to finish in a tie for seventh place. As the No. 7 seed at the MAAC tournament, they defeated No. 10 seed Siena and upset No. 2 seed Canisius to advance to the semifinals where they lost to No. 6 seed Fairfield.

They finished the 2018–19 season 16–15 overall, 11–7 in MAAC play to finish in a four-way tie for second place. As the No. 3 seed in the 2019 MAAC tournament, they were defeated by No. 6 seed Monmouth 92–98 in the quarterfinals. On March 13, 2019, they accepted an invitation to the CIT tournament, where they played NJIT in the opening round on March 18, 2019, losing 81–92.

The 2021 MAAC women's soccer tournament was the postseason women's soccer tournament for the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference held from October 31 through November 7, 2021. The seven-match tournament took place at campus sites, with the higher seed hosting matches. The host for the matches was determined by seeding from regular season play. The eight-team single-elimination tournament consisted of three rounds based on seeding from regular season conference play. The Siena Saints were the defending champions and were unable to defend their title, losing to the Quinnipiac Bobcats on pentalties in the semifinal. The Monmouth Hawks won the title by defeating Quinnipiac 4–0 in the final. This is Monmouth's sixth overall tournament win and fifth in the last six years. The title is also the sixth for head coach Krissy Turner. As tournament champions, Monmouth earned the MAAC's automatic berth into the 2021 NCAA Division I Women's Soccer Tournament.

As the second seed, they made it to the final where they were defeated by Fairfield 1–0. This was Fairfield's eighth MAAC tournament win in program history, and first for head coach David Barrett. It was their first title since 2008 and the second year in a row that Fairfield and Quinnipiac contested the final. As tournament champions, Fairfield earned the MAAC's automatic berth into the 2024 NCAA Division I women's soccer tournament.
