The 2022 MLS Next Pro season was the inaugural season of MLS Next Pro, the reserve league of Major League Soccer. It is the first season since 2014 where MLS had a standalone reserve league, the previous season being the MLS Reserve League. Including both MLS Next Pro and the MLS Reserve League, it is the ninth season of a reserve league operated by MLS. The league is sanctioned as a third division league by U.S. Soccer.

Contents

A total of 21 clubs, 20 MLS reserve teams and one independent team (Rochester New York FC) participated in the 2022 season. The regular season began on March 25 and was concluded on September 18, 2022.

Columbus Crew 2 defeated St. Louis City SC 2 4–1 in the inaugural MLS Next Pro Cup final on October 8. [1] [2]

Regular season

The regular season will feature 24 matches in a mostly regionalized schedule. Teams will play two or three games against teams in their conference. Only four matches total will be played between teams in opposite conferences. Each conference will be divided into divisions of five or six teams for scheduling. [3]

New England Revolution II play their home games at Gillette Stadium, located in Foxborough, Massachusetts, United States.

The 2022 Rochester New York FC season was the club's 23rd overall and first in MLS Next Pro. It was the first year since 2017 the club has played, and their first season under the Rochester New York FC name, after spending the first 22 seasons branded as the Rochester Raging Rhinos and Rochester Rhinos. The club was the only independent team playing in MLS Next Pro, and was one of the two teams from the league to participate in the 2022 U.S. Open Cup, alongside St. Louis City SC 2.

Atlanta United 2, New York Red Bulls II and LA Galaxy II joined the league from the USL Championship. The expansion teams include Austin FC II, Crown Legacy FC, Huntsville City FC, and Los Angeles FC 2. Rochester New York FC withdrew. The regular season ran from March 24 to September 24.

The 2023 Austin FC II season was the club's first season in MLS Next Pro, the third tier of soccer in the United States. They played in the league's Western Conference. The club finished the regular season 4th in the Western Conference and 8th overall in the regular season, qualifying for the MLSNP play-offs. In the four play-off games, Austin FC II only allowed one goal on their way to the MLS Next Pro Cup.
