For the 2022 season, MLS Next Pro is split into four divisions across two conferences. Orlando were placed in the Central Division of the Eastern Conference. In total, eight teams will qualify for the playoffs: the four divisional winners plus the two teams with the next most points in each conference. In the event a match is tied after 90 minutes, each team will receive a single point with an additional bonus point awarded to the winner of a penalty shootout. [3]

The 2020 Orlando City SC season was the club's 10th season of existence in Orlando and sixth season as a Major League Soccer franchise, the top-flight league in the United States soccer league system. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the U.S. Open Cup was canceled.
The 2021 Orlando City SC season was the club's 11th season of existence in Orlando and seventh season as a Major League Soccer franchise, the top-flight league in the United States soccer league system. There was no U.S. Open Cup for the second consecutive year as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic but the team did take part in the Leagues Cup for the first time.
The 2022 New York City FC season was the club's eighth season in Major League Soccer, the top division of soccer in the United States. The club entered the season as the defending MLS Cup champions, having won the 2021 title. NYCFC also participated in the 2022 CONCACAF Champions League and were eliminated in the semifinals by Seattle Sounders FC.
