Pavel Ardzinba

Pavel Ardzinba (1951 – 13 December 2017) was a businessman from Abkhazia who has been indicted in absentia for organising failed assassination attempts on Alexander Ankvab in July 2007 and February 2012 and on Pitsunda Mayor Beslan Ardzinba in September 2007 and June 2009. In September 2017 he surrendered to police but was released on bail. On 13 December 2017 he, together with his driver, was gunned down in his own car near Sukhumi. [1]

Abkhazia, officially the Republic of Abkhazia, is a de facto and partially recognized republic on the eastern coast of the Black Sea, south of the Greater Caucasus mountains, in northwestern Georgia. It covers 8,660 square kilometres (3,340 sq mi) and has a population of around 240,000. Its capital is Sukhumi and it is recognised as a state by Russia, Venezuela, Nicaragua, Nauru and Syria. While Georgia lacks control over Abkhazia, the Georgian government and most United Nations member states consider Abkhazia legally part of Georgia, whose constitution designates the area as the Autonomous Republic of Abkhazia.

Aleksandr Ankvab is an Abkhaz politician and businessman who was President of Abkhazia from May 29, 2011, until his resignation on June 1, 2014. Under President Sergei Bagapsh, he previously served as Prime Minister from 2005 to 2010 and Vice-President from 2010 to 2011.

Career

Pavel Ardzinba has generally shunned publicity. In the summer of 2005, he gave one interview with the opposition newspaper Forum. According to the article, Ardzinba was born in 1951 in Gudauta and graduated from Duripsh high school. He studied at but did not graduate from the Law Faculty of Rostov State University (at the same time as Alexander Ankvab). During the 1992-1993 war with Georgia, Ardzinba became Deputy Minister of Defence responsible for Armaments and Technology. Ardzinba claimed that before the war, he was the richest man of Abkhazia with assets of 600 million rubles and that he contributed greatly to the war effort. [2]

Gudauta is a town in Abkhazia, Georgia and a centre of the eponymous district. It is situated on the Black Sea, 37 km northwest to Sukhumi, the capital of Abkhazia.

After the war, Pavel Ardzinba became President of the Abkhazian-Turkish company Abtur. According to an August 2005 estimate by the newspaper Ekho Abxazii, Ardzinba was still the wealthiest and the fifth most influential businessman of Abkhazia. [2]

Under the Presidency of Vladislav Ardzinba, Pavel Ardzinba was generally believed to head one of the country's two main clans, and to be responsible for the murder of Aka Ardzinba in Moscow on 3 February 2003, the head of the other clan. [3]

Vladislav Ardzinba was the first de facto President of Abkhazia. A historian by education, Ardzinba led Abkhazia to de facto independence in the 1992–1993 War with Georgia, but its de jure independence from Georgia remained internationally unrecognised during Ardzinba's two terms as President from 1994 to 2005.

Assassination attempts on Alexander Ankvab

The current President of Abkhazia, Alexander Ankvab, has been targeted by several assassination attempts since first becoming Prime Minister in 2005. On 15 May 2012, the prosecutor office made public that on 14 May, it had placed Pavel Ardzinba on an international wanted list because it suspected him of organising the attempts in February 2012 (together with former Interior Minister Almasbei Kchach) and July 2007. On 15 May, the court ordered Ardzinba's preliminary detention in absentia. [4]

Almasbei Kchach was a former government member and vice-presidential candidate from Abkhazia who committed suicide when investigators came to arrest him in connection with an assassination attempt on President Alexander Ankvab.

Assassination attempts on Beslan Ardzinba

On 20 September 2007, an anti-tank grenade was fired from an RPG-26 launcher at the Mercedes-Benz E-220 of Pitsunda Mayor Beslan Ardzinba while it was driving down the coastal road near the village of Blabyrkhua, Gudauta District. On 1 June 2009 around 9:00, an improvised explosive devise planted at the entrance of the town hall was remotely detonated as Beslan Ardzinba and two colleagues entered the building, causing varying degrees of injuries. RPG-26 disposable anti-tank rocket launcher developed by the Soviet Union

The RPG-26 Aglen is a disposable anti-tank rocket launcher developed by the Soviet Union. It fires a single-stage rocket with jack-knife fins, which unfold after launch. The rocket carries a 72.5 millimeter diameter high explosive anti-tank single shaped charge warhead capable of penetrating 440 millimeters of armour, one meter of reinforced concrete or one and a half meters of brickwork. It has a maximum effective range of around 250 meters.

Gudauta District is a district of Abkhazia, Georgia’s breakaway republic. It corresponds to the eponymous Georgian district. Its capital is Gudauta, the town by the same name. The population of the district was 34,869 at the time of the 2003 census, down from 57,334 in 1989. By the time of the 2011 Census, the population had increased to 36,775.

On 16 May 2012, in the course of the investigation into the assassination attempts on Alexander Ankvab, the Prosecutor General also indicted Pavel Ardzinba for having organised the two attempts on the life of Beslan Ardzinba. [5]

2009 Abkhazian presidential election election

On 12 December 2009, Abkhazia held its fourth Presidential election since the post of President of the Autonomous Republic of Abkhazia was created in 1994. The election was won by incumbent president Sergei Bagapsh in the first round with 61% of the votes, thus gaining a second term in office. He was inaugurated on 12 February 2010. Bagapsh competed against four opposition candidates: former Vice President and Prime Minister Raul Khajimba, who came second behind Bagapsh in the 2004 Presidential election, and newcomers Beslan Butba, Zaur Ardzinba and Vitali Bganba. Khajimba had stated that he, Ardzinba and Butba would support each other should one of them reach the second round of the election.

Beslan Butba is a businessman and a former Prime Minister of Abkhazia. He owns Abkhazia's only private television station Abaza TV and is the chairman of the Party of the Economic Development of Abkhazia. Butba was an unsuccessful candidate in the December 2009 presidential election.

Alexander Ankvab, who was a President of Abkhazia from 2011 to 2014, has survived six assassination attempts since becoming Prime Minister in 2005.

The Abkhazian Revolution took place in 2014, when President Aleksandr Ankvab resigned after hundreds of demonstrators stormed his office. After mass protests in the capital Sukhumi and the occupation of his office on 27 May, Ankvab fled to his hometown of Gudauta and ultimately resigned on 1 June, after previously denouncing the demonstration as an attempted coup d'état.

Beslan Eshba is a vice premier of Abkhazia and the head of a sociopolitical organization Apsadgyl. Prior to his current position, he was a deputy commander in the Sukhumi battalion and an advisor to the President of Abkhazia.
