Peace Chawinga-Kaluwa born Peace Chawinga (born c.1974) is a Malawian netball player and coach. She was a stalwart member of the Malawi national netball team for over twenty years and she became the national coach on more than one occasion.

Life

Chawinga was born in about 1974. She attended and played netball for St Pius Girls Primary School. She was interested in netball and she would watch adult players at Blantyre Youth Centre to learn their tricks. While still at school she was chosen to play for "Shelter Nets". [1]

In 1990 when she was sixteen and playing for the Admarc Tigresses when she was first included as a member of the "The Queens" who are the Malawi national netball team by the coach, Grace Sithole. [1]

Chawinga was a member of the national team for over two decades. [1]

The Queens were coached by Chawinga in 2018. She replaced Whyte Mlilima, who was appointed as caretaker head coach afterthe regular coach Griffin Saenda had to withdraw on medical grounds. [2]

Chawinga took the Queens, as coach, to the Africa Netball Cup in 2021. [3]

Chawinga was fired as national coach in 2023 and she sued for unfair dismissal. [4] Eight months later Joanna Kachilika was named as Malawi's National Team Coach at the beginning of 2024. She was chosen and appointed but there was no regular wage because of funding shortfalls. [5] In Novemver 2024 she was replaced. This time the choice was to have co-coaches for the national team of Peace Chawinga-Kaluwa and Mary Waya. [6] Waya had been the national coach for Namibia. [7]

She and Waya announced a twelve person team in January 2025 to compete at the Quad Series campaign in Nottingham. The chose six new names and six experienced players who were Joyce Mvula, Takondwa Lwazi-Chiwaya, Towera Vinkhumbo, Grace Mwafulirwa-Mhango, Thandi Galeta and Martha Dambo. [8]

Mwai Kumwenda(Note 1) is a Malawi netball international player. She represented Malawi at the 2010, 2014 and 2018 Commonwealth Games and at the 2011 and 2015 Netball World Cups. Kumwenda was the top goal scorer at three successive major tournaments – the 2014 Commonwealth Games, the 2015 Netball World Cup and the 2018 Commonwealth Games. At the 2015 Netball World Cup she was also named player of the tournament. Kumwenda captained Malawi and was again tournament top scorer when they finished third at the 2016 Fast5 Netball World Series. At club level Kumwenda has played for Peninsula Waves in the Victorian Netball League, Victorian Fury in the Australian Netball League, Mainland Tactix in the ANZ Championship and for Melbourne Vixens in Suncorp Super Netball.

Grace Chiumia, is a Malawian politician who has served as Minister of Civic education in the Malawian cabinet, since 24 October 2017. Before her current appointment, she was the Minister of Home Affairs and Internal Security, in the Malawian Cabinet, from 6 September 2016 until 24 October 2017.

Towera Vinkhumbo, also referred to as Towera Vinkhumbo-Nyirenda or Towera Nyirenda, is a Malawi netball international and a Malawi women's football international. As a netball player she represented Malawi at the 2010, 2014 and 2018 Commonwealth Games and at the 2011, 2015 and 2019 Netball World Cups. Vinkhumbo was also a member of the Malawi team that finished third at the 2016 Fast5 Netball World Series. At club level, Vinkhumbo plays for Strathclyde Sirens in the Netball Superleague. In July 2019, the same month she played for Malawi in the 2019 Netball World Cup, she also represented Malawi at the 2019 COSAFA Women's Football Championship. She also played for Malawi in 2020 Summer Olympic football qualifiers.

Grace Mwafulirwa Mhango is a Malawian netball player who plays for Malawi in the positions of goal defense or wing defense. She has featured in four consecutive World Cup tournaments for Malawi in 2011, 2015, 2019, and 2023. She has also competed at the Commonwealth Games on three successive occasions in 2010 and 2014 representing Malawi.

Joanna Kachilika has been a Malawian netball player, team captain and coach of the Malawi national team. She plays in the positions of goal defense or wing defense. She has featured in two World Cup tournaments for Malawi in 2011 and in 2019. She has also competed at the Commonwealth Games on three successive occasions in 2010, 2014 and in 2018 representing Malawi.

Loreen Ngwira also spelt as Laureen Ngwira is a Malawian netball player who plays for Malawi in the positions of GD and GK.

Takondwa Lwazi also spelt as Takwonda Lwazi is a Malawian netball player who plays for Malawi internationally and for Malawian local club Blue Eagles in the positions of C and WA. She is known as one of the finest netball centre players to have played for Malawi despite being only 160cm tall in height. She also serves as a Police Sergeant in the Malawi Police Service.

Linda Kasenda is a Malawian footballer who plays as a forward for the Malawi women's national team.

Martha Dambo is a Malawian netball player who plays for Malawi in the position of goal defense.

Abigail Shariff Bongwe is a Malawian parliamentarian who was elected in 2019. She became the President of the Malawi national netball team in 2021. She and the rest of the netball executive committee resigned in May 2024.
