Peepal Farm is a not for profit, non-governmental organisation [1] located in Dhanotu village, nearby Dharamshala in Himachal Pradesh, India. [2] [3] The group works for the improvement of life conditions of the stray animal population, especially cows and dogs, and raising public awareness against animal cruelty.

History

Peepal Farm was started in December 2014 by Robin Singh and Joellen Anderson in Himachal Pradesh's Dhanotu village near the Dharamsala Town, who were then joined by the third co-founder Shivani Bhalla. [4]

Immediately before, the trio had been running a sterilization program for stray dogs in New Delhi. The idea stemmed from the limitations of animal welfare work, and they decided to do it in a way that involves and inspires others. In the year 2015, once the primary construction was complete, the farm was open to people to volunteer and work in exchange of lodging and vegan meals. [5] Since that time, farm has helped many animals heal, find homes [6] or pass on peacefully. [7]

Being the only place where large animals can recover in the area, the local administration regularly refers cases to Peepal Farm since 2017. [8] In the animal recovery center approximately 30 animals are in various stages of recovery at any given time. [9] Both traditional medicines like Ayurveda and modern allopathy are used for treatment. The farm produces organic products. [10] [11] Volunteers organize art projects to spread awareness for kindness towards animals. [12]

India has the highest number of attacks by stray dogs in the world. In Indian cities, stray dog attacks are called a menace as they attack and bite kids and old people. India has 36% of all rabies deaths in the world. India has largest number of stray dogs in the world, along with highest cases of rabies deaths. Most rabies deaths are unreported. As per Animal Birth Control (ABC) Rules, 2001, stray dogs can't be killed, but only sterilized. Municipalities lack money to sterilize stray dogs. Most Indians believe stray dog attacks are common in their area and municipality don't take proper steps to reduce dog bites. Uttar Pradesh, Odisha, Maharashtra has highest number of stray dogs. Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, West Bengal has highest dog bites. A law created in 2001 to save stray dogs has resulted in increase of stray dogs, as the law prevented killing any stray dog. Small babies are mauled to death by stray dogs in India. Bihar government found, stray dog bites are the third largest cause of disease in the state.
