The People's Democratic Party was a political party in Fiji. [1]

The party was proposed in January 2013 by the Fiji Trades Union Congress as a vehicle to promote the interests of workers and unions. [2] Shortly afterwards, the Fijian regime promulgated new regulations governing the registration of political parties, which included a ban on participation by union officials. [3] [4] The party applied for registration in April 2013. [5] Registration was approved on 29 May 2013. [6]

In May 2014 former trade union leader Felix Anthony was elected leader of the party, [7] with lawyer and prominent regime critic Aman Ravindra Singh as Secretary General and Lynda Tabuya as party president. [8] Anthony stepped down as leader following the PDP's failure to win any seats in the 2014 election, and was replaced by Adi Sivia Qoro, while Ravindra-Singh defected to the FLP in 2017. [9] Qoro resigned from the party in November 2016, [10] and the board unanimously elected Tabuya as party leader on 1 March 2017.

In December 2017 the party announced an alliance with the Conservative SODELPA to run candidates on its list in 2018 parliamentary election, motivating this with practical reasons as the party didn't think it could enter parliament on its own. [11] [12] The party was subsequently suspended by the supervisor of elections. [13]

The party was de-registered in November 2018 for failing to submit its required statement of assets and liabilities. [14]

The Fiji Labour Party, also known as Fiji Labour, is a political party in Fiji. Most of its support is from the Indo-Fijian community, although it is officially multiracial and its first leader was an indigenous Fijian, Dr. Timoci Bavadra. The party has been elected to power twice, with Timoci Bavadra and Mahendra Chaudhry becoming prime minister in 1987 and 1999 respectively. On both occasions, the resulting government was rapidly overthrown by a coup.

However, in the 2018 general election, the party recorded a considerable change in its support base due to the inclusion of more indigenous Fijian candidates.

Bune died of prostate cancer on 22 November 2023, at the age of 77.

Adi Sivia Qoro is a former Fijian politician who served as a member of the House of Representatives for a short time in 2006. A member of the Fiji Labour Party, she represented the constituency of Yasawa Nawaka. In 2006 she served as the Minister for Commerce and the Minister for Industry in the multiparty cabinet of Prime Minister Laisenia Qarase.

Aman Ravindra Singh is a Fijian politician of Indian descent. He is currently the Assistant Secretary of the Fiji Labour Party and an eminent human rights and constitutional lawyer in Fiji. The Fiji Labour Party National Council appointed Singh as their parliamentary leader in preparation for general elections to be taking place in 2019. The Party leader, Mahendra Chaudhary also announced that if Labour Party wins the general elections in 2019, Singh will become the Prime Minister.
