The People's Liberation Movement (PLM) was a political party in Montserrat.

History

The PLM was established by John Osborne in 1973. [1] In the 1978 elections it won all seven seats in the Legislative Council, with Osborne becoming Chief Minister.

The party also won the 1983 elections, claiming five of the seven seats. In the 1987 elections it was reduced to four seats, but maintained a majority in the Legislative Council. However, Minister of Communications Benjamin Chalmers left the party over corruption allegations, meaning it lost its majority. [2] [3] As a result, early elections were held in 1991, in which the party lost all four seats.

In 1996 the party was dissolved and replaced by the People's Progressive Alliance. [1] In 2001 the PPA merged with the Movement for National Reconstruction to form the New People's Liberation Movement.

The People's National Movement (PNM) is one of the two major political parties in Trinidad and Tobago. Founded in 1955 by Eric Williams, it won the 1956 General Elections and went on to hold power for an unbroken 30 years. After the death of Williams in 1981 George Chambers led the party. The party was defeated in the 1986 General Elections, losing 33–3 to the National Alliance for Reconstruction (NAR). Under the leadership of Patrick Manning, the party returned to power in 1991 following the 1990 attempted coup by the Jamaat al-Muslimeen, but lost power in 1995 to the United National Congress (UNC). The PNM lost again to the UNC in the 2000 General Elections, but a split in the UNC forced new elections in 2001. These elections resulted in an 18–18 tie between the PNM and the UNC, and President Arthur N. R. Robinson appointed Manning as Prime Minister. Manning was unable to elect a Speaker of the House of Representatives, but won an outright majority in new elections held in 2002 and again in 2007, before losing power in 2010. It returned to power in 2015 under their leader, Keith Rowley, winning 23 of the 41 seats in the 2015 General Elections.

The British Virgin Islands general election, 1967 was held in the British Virgin Islands on 14 April 1967. The election was the first general election after the passing of the new Constitution earlier in the same year, which introduced Ministerial Government into the British Virgin Islands for the first time. Elections under the prior Constitution introduced in 1950 to restore the Legislative Council had merely elected legislators. It is probably fair to say that 1967 marked the introduction of true direct democratic rule in the British Virgin Islands. But, notwithstanding the introduction of Ministerial Government, the resulting Legislative Council is still referred to as the 6th Legislative Council in deference to the five prior Councils elected under the 1950 Constitution.
