People Places Things is a 2015 American comedy film written and directed by James C. Strouse. The film stars Jemaine Clement, Regina Hall, Jessica Williams, Stephanie Allynne and Michael Chernus. The film was released on August 14, 2015, by The Film Arcade.

Plot

Will Henry is a graphic novelist and art instructor, adjusting decorations for the birthday party of his five-year-old twin daughters, Clio and Colette. As he searches for his longtime partner, Charlie, he walks in on her and Gary, a monologist she's having an affair with. Charlie tells him that she's not happy and is leaving him for Gary.

A year later, Will lives in a smaller place and sees his daughters on the weekends. They have a good relationship and he wants to spend more time with them, but Charlie has doubts he can handle it. She also tells him she is pregnant and marrying Gary.

Will's art student, Kat, asks him to dinner with her single mother, Diane. He finds Diane attractive and likable, but she has a low opinion of Kat's studies and Will's career. Diane tells him she is dating someone, and he leaves after dinner.

One night, Charlie abruptly drops the girls off at Will's, asking him to take care of them full-time as the nanny has quit. Though initially struggling, he soon becomes more organized. However, a bomb threat cancels their school day, and needing a babysitter while he teaches class, he asks Kat to watch them.

When Will goes to pick the girls up after class, Diane admonishes him for passing his daughters off on Kat when she needs her education, and for bouncing them around between parents. The girls are asleep, so Will has to spend the night. Diane tells him that she has gained a new respect for their passion for graphic novels. Confessing she broke up with the man she was seeing, she and Will kiss and are about to have sex, but one of the twins comes looking for him and he goes to keep them company. In the morning, Kat asks him to read her graphic novel.

Will and Diane begin a casual relationship, and things become tense between Charlie and Will; they blame each other's behavior for the girls' confusion. Charlie calls Will one night with 'an emergency'; when he rushes over she tells him that the girls have locked themselves in the bathroom, saying that they want to live with him. Distressed, she tells him that Gary has been having doubts about the wedding, because he thinks she's jealous about Will and Diane, and they kiss. The girls come out of the bathroom and they all go out for ice cream, Charlie promises Will that they'll talk about their relationship later. Then Will tells Diane about the kiss and she asks if he still has feelings for Charlie. He says that he doesn't know, and asks if the feelings ever go away. She says that they do eventually and hurt, breaks it off with him.

Will meets Charlie and the twins in the park, clearly believing in their relationship, but she tells him that she and Gary are again ready for marriage. Furious, Will leaves, and begins drawing vengeful artwork against Gary. He stops to read Kat's graphic novel: titled "Mother Fuckers," chronicling her mother's struggles with dating as a single mother, showing Diane more disappointed and heartbroken with every breakup. Will finds Kat again, who is angry at him for hurting her mother, and he gives her his own set of drawings, of him struggling with letting go of Charlie that he had been creating throughout the film. Later, she finds him at his home, gives him back his work, telling him that she sees it is about Charlie and he needs to let her go. She also flips to a panel he'd drawn of her mother telling him she showed it to Diane, and he should call and rekindle their relationship.

On the day of Charlie's wedding to Gary, Will attends but finds Charlie absent. Gary is trying to call her, and Will confronts him, punching him (after warning him) but also telling him that he knows Gary loves Charlie. Afterwards he finds her, she is afraid of making "another mistake," but he tells her their relationship wasn't a mistake—just something that worked until it didn't. They decide to remain friends, and Charlie marries Gary. Will leaves on his own with some stolen flowers from the wedding, presumably to go visit Diane.

The film premiered at the Sundance Film Festival on January 26, 2015. [2] On February 24, 2015, The Film Arcade acquired distribution rights to the film. [3] The film was released on August 14, 2015, by The Film Arcade. [4] Artist Gray Williams, who created all of the drawings used as Clement's in the film, also created several alternate posters to mark the movie's release. [5]

Reception

People Places Things received positive reviews from critics. On Rotten Tomatoes, the film has an approval rating of 77%, based on 57 reviews, with an average rating of 6.90/10. The website's critical consensus reads, "People Places Things finds writer-director Jim Strouse in peak form — and makes the most of talented stars who help breathe fresh life into familiar narrative territory." [6] On Metacritic, the film has a score of 68 out of 100, based on 20 critics, indicating "generally favorable reviews". [7]

Kathleen "Kat" Mitchell is a fictional character from the BBC soap opera EastEnders, played by Jessie Wallace. She was also played by Kate Peck in a flashback in 2001 and Sumar-Elise Sandford in a flashback in 2018. Kat is the second eldest Slater family sister and first appeared on 18 September 2000. Kat's usual dress is very short skirts and leopard-print tops, with much make-up and heavy fake tan. Her initial stint saw her involved in many storylines, most significantly in a plot twist that sees her supposedly sister Zoe Slater, revealed to be her daughter after she was raped by her uncle Harry Slater as a child. Kat and Zoe's relationship is tested several times, and a feud forms when they compete against each other for the affection of Anthony Trueman. Stacey Slater is a fictional character from the BBC soap opera EastEnders, portrayed by Lacey Turner. She first appears in episode 2826, originally broadcast on 1 November 2004. The character is introduced as a feisty and troublesome teenager and extension to the already established Slater family. She was created by scriptwriter Tony Jordan with Turner in mind. Producers explored the character's backstory with the introduction of her mother, Jean Slater, who has bipolar disorder. They then paired Stacey with Bradley Branning and writers developed a series of problems for their marriage, including an abortion and Stacey's scandalous affair with Bradley's father, Max Branning. In 2009, the character was placed in an issue-led storyline when she was diagnosed with bipolar disorder; the show worked with various charities to the story. Writers also incorporated Stacey in the "Who Killed Archie?" plot and revealed her as his killer in a live episode, which was followed by a two-hander episode between Stacey and Max. Stacey became pregnant by Ryan Malloy and gave birth to their daughter Lily. This led to a feud between Stacey, and Ryan's wife Janine Malloy, and culminated in Stacey fleeing Walford on the episode broadcast on 25 December 2010, to avoid imprisonment after Janine stabbed herself and framed Stacey for attempted murder. Having only been introduced for one episode, Wright was reintroduced for four more episodes the following year and became more of a regular character in the following two years. The character is introduced as the mother of Stacey Slater who suffers with bipolar disorder. Her disorder strains her relationship with her children, Stacey and Sean Slater. Wright researched the disorder to prepare for the role. In April 2010, it was announced that Jean would be written out of the series, however, Wright was awarded a reprieve in late 2010. Jean departed on 13 January 2011 and returned on 29 March 2011. Wright announced her intentions to leave the series in July 2013, and Jean departed on 17 September 2013. The character was axed in April 2010 and her departure episode was broadcast on 5 August 2010, when the character departs to study at Oxford University. Libby returned in April 2014 as part of the beginning of the Who Killed Lucy Beale? storyline. Since then she continued to make various guest appearances up until 31 January 2017.

Roxanne Lizette "Roxy" Mitchell is a fictional character from the BBC soap opera EastEnders, portrayed by Rita Simons. Roxy arrived in Walford with her sister Ronnie on 24 July 2007 and decides to move permanently to Walford from Ibiza where they ran a bar together. Roxy is the younger of the two sisters. She is described as the "fire", as opposed to Ronnie's "ice". Simons took a temporary hiatus in 2016, with Roxy off screen from 1 January until 4 May 2016. Following the announcement that Womack would be leaving the series, Simons' departure was also announced. Roxy departed the series in scenes broadcast on 1 January 2017, when she drowned in a hotel swimming pool along with Ronnie. Simons returned in 2019 to record a voiceover as Roxy, which was broadcast on 3 May 2019. A younger version of Roxy, played by Elodie de Rohan Willner, appeared in a flashback episode broadcast on 5 September 2022, which focuses on the Mitchell family in the 1970s. Flight of the Conchords is an American sitcom that was first shown on HBO on June 17, 2007. The show follows the adventures of a struggling two-man band from New Zealand, as its members seek fame and success in New York City. The show stars the duo of Jemaine Clement and Bret McKenzie, who also perform as real-life musical comedy act Flight of the Conchords. In the series, they play fictionalised versions of themselves and their band. A second season was announced on August 17, 2007 and shown from January 18, 2009. The series was created by Paige McKenzie, Nick Hagen, and Mercedes Rose, and is produced by Coat Tale Productions. The series first launched in 2010 and its premiere episode was uploaded on December 10, 2010. The Haunting of Sunshine Girl quickly rose in popularity and between December 2010 to October 2011 the show received more than 4.3 million total hits. The average length of the episodes is about two minutes but can run less depending on the episode and content.

Katarina Chapman is a fictional character from the Australian soap opera Home and Away, played by Pia Miller. The actress joined the cast in July 2014 following a successful audition. She began filming during the following month, and initially commuted from her home in Melbourne to the set in Sydney. Home and Away marked Miller's first major acting role. She made her first appearance during the episode broadcast on 5 February 2015. The actress was drawn to the part after reading that her character was a strong and resilient policewoman, who was not sexualised in any way. It stars Jacobs as novelist Kate Conklin who returns to her alma mater 15 years after graduating. It was released to video on demand platforms and select theatres on August 7, 2020, by Gravitas Ventures. It premiered on HBO Max in December 2020.
