Pereira prétend (lit.'Pereira maintains') is a 2016 French comic book by Pierre-Henry Gomont. Set in Lisbon in 1938, it is about the meeting between a conservative cultural journalist and a freelance journalist who favours left-wing authors. The book is based on the 1994 novel Pereira Maintains by Antonio Tabucchi. [1] [2] [3] [4] [5]

The comic book was published by Éditions Sarbacane  [ fr ] on 7 September 2016. [6] RTL selected it as the comic book of the month in September 2016 [7] and went on to give it its Grand Prix for comic book of the year  [ fr ]. Pereira Maintains is a 1994 novel by the Italian writer Antonio Tabucchi. It is also known as Pereira Declares and Declares Pereira. Its story follows Pereira, a journalist for the culture column of a small Lisbon newspaper, as he struggles with his conscience and the restrictions of the dictatorial regime of Antonio Salazar. Antonio Tabucchi won the Premio Campiello, Viareggio Prize and Premio Scanno in 1994 for the novel. It was adapted into a film, also called Sostiene Pereira, in 1996. It was the basis for the French comic book Pereira prétend, made by Pierre-Henry Gomont and published in 2016.
