The island of Cuba was inhabited by various Amerindian cultures prior to the arrival of the explorer Christopher Columbus in 1492. After his arrival,Spain conquered Cuba and appointed Spanish governors to rule in Havana. The administrators in Cuba were subject to the Viceroy of New Spain and the local authorities in Hispaniola. In 1762–63,Havana was briefly occupied by Britain,before being returned to Spain in exchange for Florida. A series of rebellions between 1868 and 1898,led by General Máximo Gómez,failed to end Spanish rule and claimed the lives of 49,000 Cuban guerrillas and 126,000 Spanish soldiers. However,the Spanish–American War resulted in a Spanish withdrawal from the island in 1898,and following three and a half years of subsequent US military rule,Cuba gained formal independence in 1902.
Alfredo de Zayas y Alfonso,usually known as Alfredo de Zayas under Spanish naming customs and also known as Alfredo Zayas,was a Cuban lawyer,poet and political figure. He served as prosecutor,judge,mayor of Havana,secretary of the Constitutional Convention,Senator in 1905,president of the Senate in 1906,Vice President of Cuba from 1909 to 1913 and President of Cuba from May 20,1921,to May 20,1925.
Oriente was the easternmost province of Cuba until 1976. The term "Oriente" is still used to refer to the eastern part of the country,which currently is divided into five different provinces.

Máximo Gómez y Báez was a Cuban-Dominican Generalissimo in Cuba's War of Independence (1895–1898). He was known for his controversial scorched-earth policy,which entailed dynamiting passenger trains and torching the Spanish loyalists' property and sugar plantations—including many owned by Americans. He greatly increased the efficacy of the attacks by torturing and killing not only Spanish soldiers,but also Spanish sympathizers and especially Cubans loyal to Spain. By the time the Spanish–American War broke out in April 1898,the rebellion was virtually defeated in most of Western Cuba,with only a few operating pockets in the center and the east. He refused to join forces with the Spanish in fighting off the United States,and he retired to the Quinta de los Molinos,a luxury villa outside of Havana after the war's end formerly used by captains generals as summer residence.
La Amistad was a 19th-century two-masted schooner owned by a Spaniard living in Cuba. It became renowned in July 1839 for a slave revolt by Mende captives who had been captured and sold to European slave traders and illegally transported by a Portuguese ship from West Africa to Cuba,in violation of European treaties against the Atlantic slave trade. Spanish plantation owners Don JoséRuiz and Don Pedro Montes bought 53 captives in Havana,Cuba,including four children,and were transporting them on the ship to their plantations near Puerto Príncipe. The revolt began after the schooner's cook jokingly told the slaves that they were to be "killed,salted,and cooked." Sengbe Pieh unshackled himself and the others on the third day and started the revolt. They took control of the ship,killing the captain and the cook. Two Africans were also killed in the melee.

The All Cubans were a team of Cuban professional baseball players that toured the United States during 1899 and 1902–05,playing against white semiprofessional and Negro league teams. The team was the first Latin American professional baseball team to tour the United States. As a racially integrated team,future major league players Armando Marsans and Rafael Almeida got their start in the United States on the team. The team was also a forerunner for later Negro league teams staffed by Latin American players,such as the Cuban Stars (West),the Cuban Stars (East),and the New York Cubans. Negro league stars Luis Bustamante and Carlos Morán started their American careers with the All Cubans.

Slavery in Cuba was a portion of the larger Atlantic Slave Trade that primarily supported Spanish plantation owners engaged in the sugarcane trade. It was practised on the island of Cuba from the 16th century until it was abolished by Spanish royal decree on October 7,1886.
Esteban Mesa Montejo was a Cuban slave who escaped to freedom before slavery was abolished on the island in 1886. He lived as a maroon in the mountains until that time. He also served in the war of independence in Cuba. He is known for having his biography published in 1966,in both Spanish and English,several years before his death and when he was already at least in his 90s. He seems to have lived to be about 104. In 1997 Michael Zeuske,a German historian and field researcher of Cuban slavery and life histories,found evidence of Esteban Montejo's real date of birth in the baptismal registers - not 1860,but 1868
The Havana Plan Piloto was a 1955–1958 urban proposal by Town Planning Associates,which included Paul Lester Wiener,Paul Schulz,the Catalan architect Josep Lluis Sert,and Seely Stevenson of Value &Knecht,Consulting Engineers,seeking to combine "architecture,planning,and law". The Charter got its name from the location of the fourth CIAM conference in 1933,which,due to the deteriorating political situation in Russia,took place on the "in SS Patris II" bound for Athens from Marseilles. This conference is documented in a film commissioned by Sigfried Giedion and made by his friend LászlóMoholy-Nagy. The Charter had a significant impact on urban planning after World War II and,through Josep Lluis Sert and Paul Lester Wiener,on the proposed modernization of Havana and in an effort to erase all vestiges of the 16th-century city. The plan was abandoned and was not made.
