Pergola is the second studio album by Johan, released in 2001, five years after their debut album Johan . Both albums were released on the record label Excelsior Recordings. The album was well received by the press. On 6 May 2002, the album was released with a different cover in Germany. The album was named after the street in the Dutch city of Hoorn where lead singer Jacco de Greeuw lived at the time. [1] [2] In 2009, the band received a gold record for Pergola. It had been sold over 30.000 times by that point, making it the band's best selling album. [3] The album has been described as "being part of the canon of Dutch pop music". [4]
De Greeuw wrote the album while battling depression and grief over the death of his father.
Doe Maar was a Dutch pop band that combined punk, ska, and reggae influences. Formed in 1978, they broke up in 1984, reunited in 2000, and remained sporadically active from then until 2021, when their frontman, Henny Vrienten, died. They are considered to be one of the most successful pop bands in Dutch history. The name Doe maar translates as "go ahead" or "just do it". Kayak is a Dutch rock band formed by Ton Scherpenzeel and Pim Koopman in Hilversum in 1972. In 1973, their debut album See See the Sun was released, including three hit singles. The line-up was almost the same as the one that recorded the album Royal Bed Bouncer in 1975. Only guitarist Johan Slager was not involved. He was replaced by Rob Winter.

The album was the first of the bands releases that wasn't exclusively written by Jacco de Greeuw. All songs were written by him and guitarist Robin Berlijn. The albums title also refers the period of the COVID-19 pandemic.
