History

Central Bus stand was opened in the year 1921. It was later renamed as Periyar Bus stand in 1970s. This is completely demolished and re construction started in the year 2019 with a budget of 153 crore rupees. [1]

It is also the second biggest bus depot in India, after the Millennium Park Bus Depot in Delhi. Chennai Metro Rail operates a coach depot behind the bus terminus since 2015.

Kazimar Big Mosque

Kazimar Periya Pallivasal or Kazimar Big Mosque, built in 1284 AD is the oldest mosque in Madurai city, Tamil Nadu, India. The mosque was founded by Kazi Syed Tajuddin, a descendant of Muhammad, who left Yemen in the 13th century and received the land from the King Kulasekara Ku(n) Pandiyan. The mosque which was the first Muslim place of worship in Madurai. It was managed by Tajuddin followed by his children and descendants hereditarily for more than 7 centuries. Almost all of Tajuddin's descendants have lived in the same locality for more than 700 years and the family ha managed the mosque.
