Peter James Cullinane CNZM (born 29 November 1936 [2] ), was the first Catholic bishop of Palmerston North. [3] He was appointed as Bishop of Palmerston North by Pope John Paul II on 6 March 1980 and was consecrated on 23 April 1980. [2] He established the Cathedral of the Holy Spirit (built in 1925, rededicated in 1980, renovated and added to in 1988) as his seat of operations. [4] He retired on 22 February 2012. [2] Cullinane College was named after him.
In 1990, Cullinane was awarded the New Zealand 1990 Commemoration Medal. [5] In the 2006 New Year Honours, he was appointed a Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit, for services to the community. [6]

Cullinane College is an integrated, Co-Educational Secondary school in Whanganui, New Zealand for students in Year 9 to Year 13. Cullinane College was founded in 2003, through the combining of Sacred Heart College and St Augustines College. The college is named after: Sister Vincent Cullinane RSJ and Sister Cuthbert Cullinane RSJ ; Father John Cullinane SM ; and Bishop Peter James Cullinane, first Bishop of Palmerston North (1980-2012). The Bishop of Palmerston North is the proprietor of the college.

Two allegations of "unacceptable behaviour" of a sexual nature were made. An investigation by the Catholic Church's New Zealand Office for Professional Standards found that the behaviour was unacceptable for a Catholic bishop but not criminal in nature.

Michael Andrew Gielen is a New Zealand Catholic bishop. He was born in Cambridge and raised in Tokoroa, the son of Henk and Maureen Gielen and the oldest of six siblings. He received his secondary education at Forest View High School, Tokoroa. After studying at Holy Cross Seminary, he was ordained as a priest in 1997 in Tokoroa by Bishop Max Mariu, SM, Auxiliary Bishop of Hamilton, New Zealand, the first Maori Catholic bishop. Gielen was the only priest ever ordained by Bishop Mariu. He worked in parish ministry in the Hamilton diocese serving in parishes in the East Coast, Waikato, North Waikato and Raglan. He studied at the Franciscan University of Steubenville and at the Gregorian University in Rome. From 2014 until 2019, he served as director of formation at Holy Cross Seminary in Auckland.
