Leipzig is the most populous city in the German state of Saxony. Leipzig's population of 624,689 inhabitants as of 2022 places the city as Germany's eighth most populous, as well as the second most populous city in the area of the former East Germany after (East) Berlin. Together with Halle (Saale), the city forms the polycentric Leipzig-Halle Conurbation. Between the two cities lies Leipzig/Halle Airport.
The Handball-Bundesliga (HBL) is the top German professional handball league. From 2007 onwards, the league was sponsored by Toyota and has officially been called the Toyota Handball-Bundesliga. This lasted until 2012 when the Deutsche Kreditbank AG (DKB) became the new sponsor. The official name has consequently been changed to LIQUY MOLY Handball-Bundesliga. The winners of the respective season are the official German handball champions. HBL is headquartered in Dortmund.

Stefan Kretzschmar is a retired professional German handball player. The son of Peter Kretzschmar, a legendary handball player and coach in the former GDR and Waltraud Kretzschmar, a former handball player for the East German team and winner of Olympic team medals in silver (1976) and bronze (1980), he was a three-time Olympic athlete and winner of the Olympic silver medal with the German team in 2004. He is well known for his many tattoos and piercings. He ended his active career on 14 July 2007 and currently resides in Magdeburg, Germany, where he continues to hold a position with the local handball club, SC Magdeburg. His daughter Lucie-Marie Kretzschmar is a professional handball player too and member of the German national team.
Christina Rost is a German former women's team handball player. She had her biggest success with the national team of East Germany, winning the women's world cup in 1975, the Olympic silver medal in 1976 in Montreal and, four years later, the Olympic bronze medal in Moscow.

Until the closure of the sports university DHfK, the club was part of the DHfK. Established was the club in 1954 as a competitive oriented sports club SC Wissenschaft DHfK Leipzig. The club has 6.696 members and is the biggest of Leipzig.
Sybille Gruner was a member of the German women's national handball team between 1989 and 1995. In 1993 the team won the world championships in a very close game against Denmark. One year later, during the European championship final in Berlin, they played the Danish team again and lost.

Founded in 1951, 41 editions took place before the competition was disestablished in 1991 following the reunification of Germany. SC Leipzig was the championship's most successful with fifteen championships between 1953 and 1991, followed by Fortschritt Weissenfels and Vorwärts Frankfurt with six, TSC Berlin with four and Empor Rostock with three.

Ehre sei dir, Gott, gesungen, BWV 248V, is a church cantata for the second Sunday after Christmas, which Johann Sebastian Bach composed as the fifth part of his Christmas Oratorio, written for the Christmas season of 1734–35 in Leipzig. The Christmas cantata was first performed on 2 January 1735. Bach was then Thomaskantor, responsible for music at four churches in Leipzig, a position he had assumed in 1723.
