Peter Kmec (born 11 November 1966) is a Slovak diplomat and politician who has served as the Deputy Prime Minister for European Funding of Slovakia since 2023.
Kmec was born on 11 November 1966 in Nitra. [1] Between 1985 and 1990,he studied at the Moscow State Institute of International Relations. [2] Kmec was the ambassador of Slovakia to Sweden from 2007 until 2012,later the United States from 2012 until 2018. [3] [4]
In 2020,Kmec was elected as an MP of the National Council of Slovakia on the list of Direction –Social Democracy. [5] Soon after the election,he joined the Voice –Social Democracy party,which split from Smer. [6]
As a member of Voice,Kmec served as the main foreign policy expert,until a video was published by a Smer activist showing Kmec agreeing with government foreign policy experts in the need for pro-Western focus of Slovak politics. The video was used by Smer to accuse Voice of planning to form government with liberal parties,rather than pro-Russian Smer after the 2023 Slovak parliamentary election. As a result,Kmec lost his position as the Voice foreign policy expert. [7] Following the election,Kmec became deputy prime minister as well as Minister of European Union Subsidies and the Recovery Plan in Fico's Fourth Cabinet. [2]
Direction –Social Democracy,also commonly referred to as Smer,is a left-wing nationalist and left-wing populist political party in Slovakia led by the incumbent prime minister Robert Fico. The party identifies as social-democratic,and was described as a combination of "leftist economics and nationalist appeal".
The Slovak National Party is an ultranationalist political party in Slovakia. The party characterizes itself as a nationalist party based on both social and European Christian values.
Robert Fico is a Slovak politician who is currently serving as the prime minister of Slovakia since 2023. He previously served as prime minister from 2006 to 2010 and from 2012 to 2018. He founded the political party Smer in 1999 and has led the party since. Fico holds a record as the longest-serving prime minister in the country's history,having served for over 10 years. First elected to Parliament in 1992,he was appointed the following year to the Czechoslovak delegation of the Parliamentary Assembly to the Council of Europe. Following his party's victory in the 2006 parliamentary election,he formed his first Cabinet. His political positions have been described as populist,left-wing and conservative.
Slovakia does not recognise same-sex marriage or civil unions. However,there is some limited legal recognition for unregistered cohabiting same-sex couples,notably with regard to inheritance rights. The Constitution of Slovakia has limited marriage to opposite-sex couples since 2014,and bills to allow same-sex civil partnerships have been introduced several times,most recently in 2023,but have all been rejected.

Progressive Slovakia is a liberal and social-liberal political party in Slovakia established in 2017. The party is led by Michal Šimečka,a former Vice President of the European Parliament. It was founded in 2020 by dissidents from Direction –Social Democracy (Smer) led by former prime minister Peter Pellegrini. In October 2022,it was admitted as an associate member of the Party of European Socialists (PES),although its membership was later suspended in October 2023.

Early parliamentary elections were held in the Slovak Republic on 30 September 2023 to elect members of the National Council. Regular elections were scheduled to be held in 2024. However,on 15 December 2022 the government lost a no-confidence vote. Subsequently,the National Council amended the Constitution so that an early election could be held on 30 September 2023.
