Peter Kmec (born 11 November 1966) is a Slovak diplomat and politician who has served as the Deputy Prime Minister for European Funding of Slovakia since 2023.
Kmec was born on 11 November 1966 in Nitra. [1] Between 1985 and 1990,he studied at the Moscow State Institute of International Relations. [2] Kmec was the ambassador of Slovakia to Sweden from 2007 until 2012,later the United States from 2012 until 2018. [3] [4]
In 2020,Kmec was elected as an MP of the National Council of Slovakia on the list of Direction –Social Democracy. [5] Soon after the election,he joined the Voice –Social Democracy party,which split from Smer. [6]
As a member of Voice,Kmec served as the main foreign policy expert,until a video was published by a Smer activist showing Kmec agreeing with government foreign policy experts in the need for pro-Western focus of Slovak politics. The video was used by Smer to accuse Voice of planning to form government with liberal parties,rather than pro-Russian Smer after the 2023 Slovak parliamentary election. As a result,Kmec lost his position as the Voice foreign policy expert. [7] Following the election,Kmec became deputy prime minister as well as Minister of European Union Subsidies and the Recovery Plan in Fico's Fourth Cabinet. [2]
Politics of Slovakia takes place in a framework of a parliamentary representative democratic republic,with a multi-party system. Legislative power is vested in the parliament and it can be exercised in some cases also by the government or directly by citizens.
The Slovak Democratic and Christian Union –Democratic Party is a liberal-conservative,Christian-democratic political party in Slovakia. The SDKÚ-DS was a member of the Centrist Democrat International and was a member of the European People's Party until 2018,when it was expelled due to inactivity.
Direction –Social Democracy,also commonly referred to as Smer,is a left-wing nationalist and left-wing populist political party in Slovakia led by the incumbent prime minister Robert Fico. The party identifies as social-democratic,and was described as a combination of "leftist economics and nationalist appeal".
The Slovak National Party is an ultranationalist political party in Slovakia. The party characterizes itself as a nationalist party based on both social and European Christian values.

The elections followed the fall of Prime Minister Iveta Radičová's Slovak Democratic and Christian Union –Democratic Party-led coalition in October 2011 over a no confidence vote her government had lost because of its support for the European Financial Stability Fund. Amidst a major corruption scandal involving local center-right politicians,former Prime Minister Robert Fico's Direction –Social Democracy won an absolute majority of seats.
Peter Žiga is a Slovak politician and businessman,a member of the National Council for Voice –Social Democracy (Hlas-SD),and previously Direction –Social Democracy (SMER-SD). He was formerly Minister of the Environment (2012–2016) and Minister of the Economy (2016–2020) of Slovakia.

Michal Šimečka is a Slovak politician,journalist,and researcher,who served as a Vice-President of the European Parliament between 2022 and 2023. He also became a Member of the European Parliament between 2019 and 2023. In 2020,Šimečka was elected vice-president of the European political group Renew Europe. He is a co-founder of the social-liberal Progressive Slovakia party,leading it from 2022.
Voice –Social Democracy,is a social democratic and populist political party in Slovakia. It was founded in 2020 by dissidents from Direction –Social Democracy (Smer) led by former prime minister Peter Pellegrini. In October 2022,it was admitted as an associate member of the Party of European Socialists (PES),although its membership was later suspended in October 2023.
Early parliamentary elections were held in the Slovak Republic on 30 September 2023 to elect members of the National Council. Regular elections were scheduled to be held in 2024. However,on 15 December 2022 the government lost a no-confidence vote. Subsequently,the National Council amended the Constitution so that an early election could be held on 30 September 2023. This was the first snap election in the country since 2012.

Ľubomír Vážny is a Slovak politician. He is a former Minister of Transport,Posts and Telecommunications of the Slovak Republic. He served from 4 July 2006 to 8 July 2010. From 2012 to 2016,he was Deputy Prime Minister of the Slovak Republic for Investments. From 24 July 2017 to 9 September 2020,he was the Director General of the Social Insurance Institution.
Dušan Muňko is a Slovak politician,since 2002 intermittently a current member of the National Council of the Slovak Republic for the SMER –Social Democracy party. He also held the office of State Secretary at the Ministry of Environment of the Slovak Republic and Director General of the Social Insurance Institution.
MatúšŠutaj Eštok is a Slovak politician who has served as the Minister of Interior of Slovakia since 2023. He was an MP of the National Council.
